IGN.com (http://www.ign.com) has a preview with the first screenshots for Worms (http://psp.ign.com/articles/634/634026p1.html) for DS and PSP.
We are developing incredibly addictive new versions of our classic game for existing fans of the series and newcomers to the world of Worms. It's time to dust off the Holy Hand Grenade and unleash some more exploding sheep!
Thank god they're not trying to port the lame 3d version.

I guess I may be in the minority here, but I actually enjoyed the 3d version. I didn't try the weird Fort one that came out yet, but Worms 3d I found every big as engaging as the rest in the series, really looking forward to these and I hope they have a save feature, the gba version of world party doesn't save options at all, you have to use codes to go back to certain areas....and here I thought it wasn't the 1990's still....

I played the demo for the new one (3D) and I didn't think that it was that bad.
As for the other 3D versions of the games...blech

I just don't know if this will be the same without the Beavis and Butthead soundpack.

This could turn out to be very, very good.

My problem with the 3d worms is that the whole strategy of aiming that made the old worms games so captivating is completely missing.

In 2d worms, you could hit far away targets by making a well aimed arc shot. In 3d worms, since the only viable way to aim is in 1st person mode you can forget about trying to hit a target that's far away especially if he's not in your line of sight but obscured by a mountain or something. If you compare the worm placement of 3d worms to 2d worms you'll notice that the worms start A LOT closer to one another and the levels are MUCH smaller.

Since at least half the fun of worms was aiming at targets, all that's left is the strategy elements. You'd think Team 17 would try to beef these up but no. In terms of choices the player has, worms 3d is exactly like worms 3d.

I'd like to see a better aiming mechanism (perhaps using a side perspective) and I'd like to see Team 17 infuse some strategy into the game if they're gonna make it 3d. How about different worm classes with different abilities?

Sweet baby Jesus, the game I've been waiting for. Social life? What's that?

That's a really good idea. If there was a way to "lock on" to a particular opponent so that from a side view, you'd only change the up/down angle of aim, that would do a great deal to make it seem like Worms. Of course, what do you do about the 3D wind? If the wind can blow your projectile east and west as well as north, south, up, and down, then you have to aim in three dimensions.

I never understood why they moved on from the 2D format. 2D can do things that 3D never can -- see Soldat (http://www.soldat.pl) for a rather unique third-person shooter.

That's actually exactly what I was thinking.

Maybe they could do something so the wind always blows with, against or at a right angle of the worm making the shot. Realistic? No. Fun? Yes.

Worms 3D was basically a golf game with explosives. Once you approach it from that angle, it's pretty fun on its own but by no means a replacement for the proper 2D game.

"Portable Worms" has been available for a while now. I have been playing multiplayer (online) portable worms for almost 2 months on the Ngage. You guys can knock the Ngage all you want but it makes a damn good phone and a few good online games to play when you are stuck some place boring. Worms, Pocket Kingdom and Pathway to Glory are excellent titles. Not to mention Gameboy Color and NES games at full speed.
