Retired Dark Age of Camelot accounts reactivated for free trial period.

"A day after indefinitely postponing its long-in-development massively multiplayer online role-playing game Imperator, Mythic Entertainment is turning its attention back to its original breadwinner, Dark Age of Camelot, with a promotion aimed at bringing former players back into the fold."

Poor mythic...an obvious victim to the giants that are WoW and the monthly-free GW.

Camelot suffers from the fate of all MMOG's -- lack of fun things to do in the upper levels. I quit after 3 months because all I was doing was going to that stonehinge dungeon night after night. Then I bought the first expansion pack when it was $15 at Circuit City, started a new account, and played a Necro for a while before all I was doing was grinding in a field of skeletons night after night. That only lasted the free month. I'll probably pass on this free time.

Even the great WoW suffers from problems as characters level. I just re-upped my WoW account with some friends and we all started some new characters. While doing quests last night, it hit me why I would rather play my low level character vs my level 54 character -- fast play. With my level 54, I have to go to high level zones, which are usually remote. So it takes some time to fly/run there. Quite a bit of time actually. And there is usually a distinct lack of civilization in these remote zones (no inns or mailboxes). And most of the quests at that level are Elite and require a group, so time has to be spent forming that. I have to carefully choose which quest I am going to do because, once I start, I am committed, which leads me to pondering over the screen longer than I actually play.

Meanwhile, at the low levels, all of the quests are near a major town (with mailbox and inn) and take no time at all to get to. Rather than spending a portion of the night travelling, I can jump right in and right out when I need to. I can choose any quest because they are all like this, so my decision process is fast.

This is where the fun is, in playing versus pondering.

I think I'll pass on this free time as well. I have a bad itch to play CoH again for some reason. Here lately I've been watching The Incredibles almost nightly and now I want to superhero some bad guy asses into the ground.

Sorry Mythic, I was interested in Imperator, but I don't want to swing swords again right now. I think I'll just get that new psu for my main PC and either get back into GW or CoH. Just make sure the Warhammer MMO is amazing when it comes out in a couple years.

Mythic didn't need wow to give it problems, it is its own worst enemy when it comes to daoc. They had a pretty good realm vs. realm combat system in place at one point, and then ruined it by attaching a very nasty PvE expansion.

I like DAoC a lot, I really enjoyed playing a bard, but WoW just seems to be DAoC "done right".... With the new WoW patch, my lvl 60 Warrior is actually fun to play in the battlegrounds now... Warsong CTF is my new internet crack.

Come on over to Guardian! And send me a PM if you do. I'll be starting up a new supergroup fairly soon.

I think it's giving Mythic too much to pass this off as just due to WoW and GW. I mean there are plenty of online games that aren't faltering in spite of those two high sellers. CoH is a good example: they had some low points right after the release of WoW and EQ2, but now they're up at the peak number of players since release, and that's almost certain to go up with CoV's release. EQ2's another good example.

Does anyone know if the download version they offer actually contains any of the expansions for the graphics update or is it the very original DAOC, which of course looks like total crap today?

The 14 day trial version is the original plus Shrouded Isles and has the Catacomb engine (new engine).

Which is why, apparently they've created 2 new "Classic" servers, which their entire player base is moving over to. It removes the later expansions and returns it to the original realm vs realm stuff everyone liked.

Personally I really liked the world they created and their PvP, it was just lacking in the single player questing/grinding. Not to mention that their tradeskill system was a brutal time/money hole

Not when DAoC was first released. My druid made some good coin before they "fixed" it. All you had to do was run the errand quests while skilling up and you were rich before you hit the cap. It didn't last long though.

You and me both man... But my friggin WoW account charged me like last week, so now I can't bring myself to reopen my CoH account. I want to go back to flying around and shooting stuff with blasts of energy, dammit <.<

I got lucky. Cancelled my WoW account Sunday when it would've charged me Wednesday. Heh. Join me on Guardian!

I don't have any money at all right now, so don't feel bad. Besides that I can't even find my CoH disks, and my main PC is dead due to a blown psu. Oh life is grand.

Why on Earth do game developers keep making so many damned mmorpgs? There must be a billion of them! Aren't most of these guys losing money by truckload?

Furious Wang... that name is familiar. Did you use to post on the 8-Bit Theatre forums?
