Moviehole (http://www.moviehole.net/news/5946.html) has this report online about how Warner producer Jeff Robinov wishes to revitalize the Conan franchise in the same way that he has to the Batman franchise with Christopher Nolan.

Waiting for a "Conan" script from an unnamed action writer-director (rumoured to be Robert Rodriguez), Robinov is committed to producing the film within the next year.

"I love the character," says Robinov, who is going back to two of the original stories. "It all depends on how the character is realized and the execution of the movie. You hope to satisfy the fan base and the broader audience. There has always been a fan base for the Conan character. So many years have gone by. You have to get to the core of who the Conan character was. It's like catching mercury."

Kudos CBR (http://www.comicbookresources.com).

Although I personally haven't been reading them, my housemate tells me the Conan comic going on right now (written by the amazing Kurt Busiek) is really good. A movie following in those tracks couldn't be a bad thing. I've never been a fan of the Conan franchise in the past, but maybe this will be enough to push me overboard?

I remember reading the Conan books years ago. While Arnold was physically the perfect Conan he never really brought out the character. I would love to see them redo this. Conan was a bad ass. I still have a stack about a foot high of the old comics. Conan the king with naked woman drapped all around him...killing legions of undead/men....sounds good to me.

So much misplaced angst.

John Milius did a script that is supposedly brilliant, but when the Wachowskis were handling the production, they scrapped it. I wonder if they'll revisit his script?

Conan the comic (http://www.bcbcomics.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=8005) and the trade (http://www.bcbcomics.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=7884) are actually some of my best sellers this year.

I'm sorry, but if it isn't written and directed by Milius along with Basil Poledouris scoring, they can fuck off. I know they didn't exactly capture the character the way the fans wanted, but it was a damn fine fantasy film with one of the greatest original soundtracks of all time. He's been trying to make the damn thing for more than 20 years, and even nutjobs like him deserve the right to finish what they started.

It's just not going to be Conan without Arnold.

Oh boy. More comic book movies...

I'm in the "new idea" camp.

Does every movie made now have to be either a sequel, a remake, a comic book, or a sequel to a remake of a comic book, or a remake of a sequel to a comic book?

See how redundant that sounds? That redundancy is exactly what the box office has looked like for almost 2 or 3 years. And they wonder why ticket sales are down.

Ugh. I just get tired of this attitude. Is there a lot of stagnance in Hollywood? Yes. Just like there always has been. But using the ridiculous hyperbole that NOTHING new is on the horizon doesn't come close to helping. The truth is that yes, there will always be lazy filmmakers who use a popular franchise to get money -- but there will also be good filmmakers who truly revitalize a licensed character and make it worth going to see. As far the "new idea" camp goes, my thought has always been: create your own new ideas and throw them out there, or quit your bitching.

Xenon brings up a good point. Ahnuld was an obvious choice for Conan. He has a certain quality lending itself to the role. Who in this day and age could play Conan? You couldn't put some scrawny guyin a muscle suit, so it would have to be someone built well. Obvious ideas to fly out first would be the Rock and Vin Diesel, but they just dont feel right in the role to me. So you they would have to find an unknown buff guy to play him.

Gotta be bigger than Vin Diesel and more... celtic, than the rock.

Maybe that austrian bodybuilder that played young Arnold in See Arnold Run? He was huge.

Triple H was going to play Arnold's son, with Arnold playing an older "king conan". I suppose triple H could do it, but i think another unknown like Arnold was would be the best for the feel of the film. A wrestler would be too distracting.

Do you have any idea who Robert E. Howard is?

Hell, why didn't I think of mentioning that? Ugh. All this annoying bitching-about-supposed-lack-of-originality got to my head so much that I forgot that.
