Shamelessly stolen from another forum.

Editor: Here's the 5.7 release note. (http://www2.ati.com/drivers/Catalyst_57_release_notes.html)

I find it strange that the new Catalyst drivers support 1080p but the XBox 360 does not. Particularly considering MS is working "closely" with ATI...

"1080p Display Support Option
Catalyst™ 5.7 introduces support enhancement to the display support options found in the Digital Panel Properties of the Catalyst™ Control Center. This enhancement will offer a 1080p standard format option for a displays that are reporting incomplete or incorrect capabilities in their EDID information. This feature will be supported on ATI Radeon® X300 products and above, and will be supported under the Microsoft Windows XP, 2000 and the next release of the Windows XP Media Center Edition operating systems. "

XBox 360 missing 1080p support...

http://interviews.teamxbox.com/xbox/1190/Xbox-360-Interview-Todd-Holmdahl/p1/

"Xbox 360 does not support 1080p at this time. It’s an incremental improvement at an astronomical expense, and we don’t see consumers clamoring for 1080p TVs yet. We will continue evaluate the market and deliver the capability when and if customers want it. "

and yes Dorthy there is a 1080p television on the way...

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000913048957/

"Mitsubishi Digital Electronics has begun shipping its first 1080p DLP TV, the 52-inch 52-inch WD-52627. "

...not to mention front projectors that support 1080p.

That's 1 consumer vote Yes for 1080p.

And for that price, I could buy several high-end PC's.

Prices on tech goods are always a premium at first...and I certainly would suspect they'll go down in time for the holidays...

Do you think it'll go down about $3000? Because I don't seem myself paying over $900 for a TV ever again.

It's my opinion that people who purchase $4000 televisions are merely purchasing un-proven technology and funding the R&D of better products. Those people fill a role, but I cannot be one of them for reasons of finance and common sense.

doesn't seem strange to me. one is a driver, the other a game platform.

But the driver is for the video card made by the manufacturer that just happens to be the same manufacturer putting a similar video card in the game platform. Still odd to me.

It's not that odd, really. They're cutting costs, and before you know it, they'll be selling little conversion boxes. Just like they did for the first xbox.

I don't see any reason why the hardware in the Xbox 360 can't support 1080p, or greater resolutions. After all, it's just an increased resolution. However, actually having games running smoothly in 1080p is another story.
