View Full Version : Japanese Love for Xbox 360 = 2%
Kamalot

According to a poll conducted by a Japanese news service, when asked which next generation console they were most interested in a whopping 2% of gamers responded with Xbox 360. The poll was conducted with 1000 Japanese gamers with the most popular console holding a margin of 60%.
To put that number in perspective, think about this: the PS2 sold twice that...in the first two days.
Even though we are told by Microsoft that Japanese support is increasing dramatically for the Xbox 360, support for the original Xbox is practically zero.
A five time increase in popularity over 'almost 0' isn't very much overall.
Thanks to 1Up (http://www.1up.com/) for the article (http://www.gametab.com/news/317449/).

If Sony's console turns out to be significantly more expensive than 360 then I have a feeling some of them may have 2nd thoughts. That being said, MS has nowhere to go but up in the Japanease market.

I have no love for any specific nextgen console, but those numbers mean absolutely nothing. Of course interest in XBox 360 before launch is going to be low in Japan based on how the original XBox did. The true test for Xbox 360 in Japan will be once the system launches and games are out that Japanese players are interested in (if any). Another useless poll that proves absolutely nothing.

In other statistics 75% of world console sales are not in Japan.
I don't think the X360 has been announced in Japan. We also know that software (yes indeed) drives sales so I guess we will see what games MS launches with. For all we know Rev might take over Japan.

Seems to me this just goes to show that they're more interested in brand loyalty or nationalism than gaming. Any gamer worth his salt would be anticipating any new powerhouse console, American or otherwise.

Only 2% are interested in Blue Dragon?
And I think it's something beyond nationalism as the xbox hasn't done well in other parts of Asia. Koreans are open to American games and are into online play (one of the xbox's strengths) and the xbox never took off there. Like you'd think being non-Japanese would be advantage in markets like Korea and China. How can Microsoft screw up the entire Asian market?

Because they haven't. Blue Dragon hasn't even been shown off yet, which is why many of us are saying this poll is utterly pointless. It's like me commenting on a newly announced game I've never seen versus a game I know and love. This poll is a waste of a news item.

The 360 is going to fail just as much as XBOX did in Japan, the gamers there have blind loyalties to Japanese game companies. They don't want American games, and they definetly don't want an American console. As was said in the other topic, this also is becoming less and less relevant, because as the XBOX gains popularity in Europe and the US, Japan is becoming less and less important. Then there are the markets of Korea and China, which would more than make up for the loss of Japan.
Now I'm not 'against' Japanese game developers, I like many of them. But I have a rabid hate of Sony and their shoddy products, and I really wouldn't mind saying goodbye to the Playstations for good.

How do you mean? Do you mean owning Sony products? Because I own both a PS1 and PS2. Do you mean activily playing games on Sony consoles? Because I've been enjoying Phantom Brave and GTA: SA quite a bit lately. But that doesn't change the fact that the PS2 is the worst of the three systems when it comes to quality and design, or that Sony as a company has gone above and beyond the usual corporate shinanigans.
Also, keep in mind that I'm a big Gamecube fan, I don't refuse to buy Japanese games or products. I'm minoring in Japanese Studies, and plan on living there for at least a couple of years some time after I get my degree. I do enjoy the things I play. Here is the problem: Sony makes low quality products. Their consoles are known for having massive defects, that often times render their consoles unusable only a year after purchase. Then there is the problem with their DVD drives wearing down to where they no longer recognize DVD discs, yet continue to play games. Then there is their controller, which besides having a horrible design for long-term play, is also prone to breaking easily. Of all of the controllers I've had over the years, the PS2 is the only one I've ever broken a controller with. Simply slipping out of my hand onto a carpeted floor was enough to destroy the vibration function.
I'm not the only one who feels this way, it's a well documented fact that Sony has horrible production quality. Their designs are flawed, often times in seemingly obvious ways (the button problem on the PSP) that they just don't seem to care enough to fix. As well, they are the least innovative of the three major players. Their online support is nearly non-existent, they offer no hardware innovations like a hard-drive, and no software revolutions like streaming media or a universal interface in games. Nintendo, although not really doing anything special with hardware (yet) does do great things with their games, consistently creating or significantly changing genres.
Despite all this, Sony leads in sales because they are still riding on the brand they built with the first generation Playstation. I will gladly say that the PS1 was an excellent console at the time, with it's only competition being the N64. But it also suffers from many of the standard Sony issues, with most of the first year of PS1's breaking a year after release. I knew at least five people who had to buy new PS1's because of this wiring issue. This goes beyond what should be considered a standard number of defective products.
So in conclusion, Sony is a bad company, and if they didn't have so much popularity which garners them exclusive titles from much of the Japanese market, I wouldn't buy from them.

You do provide goods points, and i do understand the idea that if you purchase something it shouldnt break in such a short time. For example, I have only broken one ps2 controller in my life and it was not my fault. I lent my ps2 out to a friend and they stepped on the joystick and it broke, making it unusable. I have also to be honest, swung my ps2 controller around by the cord smashing stuff like and ax and they still are in good shape. I indeed did buy a first generation ps2 so i am well aware of the disk read errors that occure from using DVD discs on a dvd player of all things and the additional Black(im not to sure havent busted the ps2 out in months, but there is certain disc type that makes the ps2 work hard, overly hard ruining the lazer track.) type of disc that also causes DRE's. The psp on the other hand and the button issue was merely a factory issue, they corrected it because the machine that was cutting the plastic was missing a few CM of plastic causing the button to stick. Another thing, if you were techincally adept, you can just take it apart and sand it down but the consumer shouldnt have to go to that level for something they have bought. I agree bad hardware does taint sonys Image and their pre-hype of the ps2 was laughable in some ways but then again, all the games i played on the ps2 were good experiences so it makes up for its shortfall. I hope with the next generation sony has learnt of it's mistakes (come on guys, you think after all the bitching that occurs, they are unaware of the problems?). Anyways, next generation consider it a fresh start for sony and you. One more thing, sony did ride the brand in the beginning but also they were supposedly offering better games than the dreamcast so people naturally choose the superior machine in my opinion anyways, ive played many dreamcast games and the ports over to ps2 so i can say i know what im talking about slightly.

I could have quoted the whole thing, but I don't see a reason to. Anyway, you wouldn't know any of this from my house. I've never had a problem with my PS2, where my X-box failed after a year of not even hard use. My Sony TV, which I've had since '94, still works great. My Sony shelf stereo, which I've had since 2000, still works like new. My PSP has no dead pixels and no sticky buttons like others have complained about. Hell, I came across my old walkman the other day when I was cleaning out my closet, and it works perfectly. I've had that thing since about '92, and its been lost since about '98 or so, and it still sounds great.
Hell, before I started trolling internet forums, I never knew anyone who had had any kind of problem with a Sony product. From my own experience, Sony is probably the best electronic's manufacturer out there.
Oh, and the Dual Shock controller is the best console controller I've ever used. I will admit, though, it's still got nothing on my original Logitch Wingman joystick.

Sony has a lot of balls this coming round. They'll be out (up to) a year after the 360 and will cost more (most likely).
I remember when everyone who played games was waiting for the Ultra 64 and how it was going to be the best system ever. No one thought a Play Station could take down the mighty 64. ... Well we know how that turned out. In the business world you can't turn your back for a second if you're after first place. Sony and MS are gonna battle to the death while Nintendo keeps selling their junk to kids and laughing it's ass off in 3rd. It'll be a good battle.

There's no information of how the survey was conducted, or what the sample selection method was. The article provides very little useful information to verify and analyze the results. You cannot just conclude the error is close to 1% without having seen any of the analysis or even the survey. The article does not even list the confidence interval.

Well, if the 360 completly stomps the PS3 in Japan (it won't) then that'll attract a lot more Japanese developers to their cause, meaning more 360 games that would of likely been PS3 exclusives. In turn, that'll make it more popular, which means even more games all around.

Which is probably what I'll do since the 360 is going to get dominated in Japan, but not until the PS3 gets a couple of price cuts. Also, there'll have to be exclusive (permanently exclusive) GTA games, and Nippon Ichi titles that remain in the style of the current games.

Man, FUCK the japanese. If it were up to them, the only games we'd play would be horse race simulators, mahjong with naked anime girls and dating sims with, yes you guessed it, more naked anime girls.
...But I can think of at least one way to make a fun Horse sim involving naked anime girls...

Fuck Mikami? Fuck Capcom?
Fuck em all with their tiny apartments and their uniformly black hair and their soiled panty vending machines and their bizarre commercials starring huge western celebrities and their strong work ethic and their unceasing racism. Fuck the whole damn island.

I was half kidding and wasn't soley referring to your asinine post. But really, this is Evil Avatar, not I HATE ____ .com(insert ethnic group here)
I think the Japanese will buy an Xbox when a large portion of the games on the system appeals to them. Until then, of course they'll scoff. They have nothing but the original Xbox to go on as previous evidence. And that was a turd for Japanese oriented gaming.

Seriously, I brought a new PS2 home and the BRAND SPANKING NEW controller couldn't even handle a button-mashing session of Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 without the stinking triangle button becoming permanently ruined. Pathetic. How am I supposed to scroll through a few thousand blue menus with that cheap hardware?

That's pretty much what we're talking about...
Also, I heard good old Ken mention something about the PS3 still being able to function in the event one of Cell's spes are defective. First of all, what the fuck? Secondly, he's basically coming out and saying consumers can expect their PS3's to fail not long after buying them.
Now I don't know about you people, but I'm not very encouraged by the fact that my PS3 can "still function" in the event that parts of it turn out to be defective. Why should the consumer have to worry about potentially defective hardware in the first place, then be encouraged that the system will work a while longer if parts blow out? Ridiculous.
There's no way in hell I'm buing a first-generation PS3. I expect the whole damn line to just explode like those defective Ford trucks.

I know I'm a very small minority here, being whitey in Japan, but I have to say that pre-release support for the X360 is pretty damn important to me. It's not like I'm a rich guy and can afford to shell out on more than one version of a console. So I have an instant dilema of either paying a hugely upmarked price for an import machine from the States when they're released or wait and see the support for the Japanese launch and see if anything is going to be on a par with Oblivion (which is almost 99% certainly not going to get a release here). So far the only bonus game I've had the pleasure of owning on Xbox which made me happy to have a Japanese machine was Phantom Dust, but you can buy that at home for almost half the price.
I sat on buying an original Xbox for months because the support in Japan was so poor. On release the box DID have Japanese support from the begininng, but the library was crap and consisted of rubbish puzzle games and unremarkable shooters. When it failed to stand up to an entrenched games machine that had recognised brand games and a 2 year head start it just started a viscious circle that Microsoft just weren't going to get out of.
Saying that, most Japanese gamers I've met who are into their Xbox, love it to pieces. Every time a new big game is released I end up bumping into the same people online.

This is wrong in so many places but I don't have time to explain. I am off to work. OT- I don't care what japanese people think about xbox360 because I will own a PS3 as well.

This has to be the most hilariously accurate statement I've ever read on a videogame message board. I love this guy.
Maybe the Japanese don't want to get into the horrible cycle of the THREE GREAT GENRES. Racing Game. Sports Game. Shooter Game. Rinse and repeat.

They recycle console RPGs, creepy dating sims and 2D/3D fighting games instead?
*sigh* You're going to think this is personal - just because we butted heads on another thread, aren't you?
But please do confirm that you think the Japanese market has less innovative games, and then try to defend it. I can't wait.

Here's a quick one. CPUs for personal computers come off the production line with a fairly high defect rate. Now, a chip designed to be a 3.2ghz Pentium 4 can come off with a defect that makes the clock speed not as fast as it should be. Say, 2.6ghz. Intel packages and sells this as a 2.6ghz CPU because it acts just like a 2.6ghz one even though in reality it is a rejected 3.2ghz chip. This is not exactly how it happens, but you get the idea. It increases yields beause otherwise you're throwing away thousands of perfectly working chips just because they aren't what you originally wanted them to be. Everybody does this.
Sony will produce the PS3 CELL chip with 8 SPE units. However, to make sure they can produce enough and to save a whole shitload of money they specify that only 7 will be used. This way they can increase yields by using a CELL chip that comes off the line with only 7 working SPE units. There will be no difference between a PS3 with 7 working SPE's and one with 8 working SPE's as the PS3 will only "talk" to 7 of them.
Alright? Alright.

There's no information of how the survey was conducted, or what the sample selection method was. The article provides very little useful information to verify and analyze the results. You cannot just conclude the error is close to 1% without having seen any of the analysis or even the survey. The article does not even list the confidence interval.
1 year studiying a lot of god damn statistics, distributions and the such, tell me that that king of population is not bad at all...

I barely remember you actually, what are you? Nintendo troll, Sony fanboy or bleeding heart liberal? I think that's all, maybe a defender of EA?
And no Japan isn't less innovative, though I guess it depends on your definition. I count the fact they're all on LSD as innovative, some might not.

That explains so much as to why computers are (or were for most, pre XP) so damn unstable.
