The BBC has a news (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4670009.stm) item about a series of live classic concerts in the US featuring video games soundtracks.
Against a backdrop of images and lights, classically-trained musicians turned their hand to the themes from sci-fi epic Halo, Tomb Raider, the Mario games, plus a medley of old-school favourites like Pong, Space Invaders and Pacman.
Space invaders?

What the hell? Pong?

Beep.... boop..... beep.... boop.

Oh yeah, there's your work of musical art right there.

did anyone else feel slightly cheated that the title music in halo2 is EXACTLY THE SAME as in halo1, but re-recorded? i mean, those tunes are totally epic, and sum up halo ONE for me, i expected to associate a whole new set of epic tunes with the new one. at least that's one of the very few disappointments that i have about the game ;)

were there no japanese RPGs in the list? aren't some of those supposed to have the best soundtracks of any game? considerably better than pac man and... pong i should think.

Yer i felt a little cheated also. I have to admit though the ingame soundtracks for the levels were fantastic in my opinion.

I even bought the soundtrack CD.

Spoken like a true Halo fanboy :D

Err.. no.. I want the title music to be the same. The "haaaaaaahaaaaaaaa haaaaaahaaaa" is classic Halo, no need to change that. The rest of the music is totally new and brilliant actually.

Nah, that would be the definition of a "theme".

what, that it stays the same between an original and a sequel? that doesn't sounds like the definition of "theme" to me. also, the music can have a "theme" without being "exactly the same".

Ever watched these movies called Star Wars? Or perhaps Lord of the Rings? Those both have major themes that carry across all the films, but then introduce new ones as well.

Listen to the Halo 2 menu music. It's the original theme for about 20 seconds, but then goes into some completely new themes.

whine whine, blah blah

Okay, I don't own Halo 2, but I've heard the title music often enough and I can tell you you're full of crap if you think it's "exactly the same." I'm pretty sure the guitar stuff is all new, at least.

edit: also, what's with those music selections? They aren't awful choices, but MechWarrior 2 could use some love.

Hell, yeah. That soundtrack was fantastic. A perfect blend of electronic and tribal musical influences. It's still on my hard drive to this day.

Did Zelda not get used at all? It seems like an obvious choice. I have some orchestral Zelda mp3s and they're good listening.
