According to PCWorld (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,136535-c,gameconsoles/article.html) the rest of the 60GB PS3 systems are now out in the retail channel. Sony confirms that there are no more 60GB PS3 systems being made.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that Sony's online inventory had been fully depleted. In July, after slashing the PS3 price by $100, the company said that the now discontinued 60GB PS3 would be available for several months.

"We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated," a Sony representative said. The story goes on to say that they think the 80GB version will drop in price once the 60GB version dries up at retail. We shall see...

are they trying to scare us into buying one or something?

No, they're trying to get to one SKU. It was known that the 60GB was going the way of the dodo so if people were going to get scared they should've already done so(scared as in wanting to snag a ps3 with hardware BC).

They're not going to announce that the 80GB is going down to the 60GB price until most/all of the 60GB units have sold from retail.

Oops, for some reason I thought it was an official announcement from Sony (must have just quickly glanced), which is why it sounded a little "pushy" to me. You know, like "We're running out of 60gbs, go buy one now!" kind of thing. Spoke to soon, retract my original statement.

So even though it's unofficial why would I buy a 60GB version if the 80GB is going to be the same price? Is BC the only thing?

Pretty much. And also the fact that you can get the 60gb right now for the cheaper price, and the difference between 60 and 80 is not that big of a deal, especially when you can slap on any hd you want.

I'm actually considering purchasing a PS3 sometime later this year (if the wife will allow it...yeah, I'm not my own man). Things I'm waiting to see though:

1 - More Keyboard + Mouse support in FPS games.
* Epic is doing it for UT3 and this is what makes me want to buy a PS3 now. I am sick to death with the PC hardware upgrade cycle after so many years. I know the PS3 will be more than adequate in terms of graphics for the next several years.

The other point is I am getting sick of the things publishers are cramming into games to ruin our Personal Computers (Starforce, SecureROM...yes, from SONY...eek). It's come to the point where I value the security and stability of my PC more than gaming. The only thing stopping me was FPS + gamepad controls (barf!). Now with that out of the way, I'm there.

2 - 65nm shrink of Cell processor.
* I have read that this should be coming down the pipe this year.
3 - 65nm shrink of RSX processor.
* I have heard only a few whispers about this but nothing concrete. Will SONY wait and release a new SKU with both processors at the 65nm process or will we see a 65nm Cell + 90nm RSX first?
4 - Xvid/Divx codec support.
* Yes, I can dream :p ..but with the new streaming capabilities with the latest firmware this addition would blow away all the multimedia options out there now...dare I say, even XBMC).
5 - Video editing software.
* I can't see why this hasn't been implemented yet. The PS3 is meant to be a multimedia hub and SONY makes DV cameras. With the Cell processing power it would make for a dynamo realtime video editor...seems like a natural fit to me. ;)
6 - HDD-less SKU
* Face it, most of us 'enthusiasts' will never be satisfied with whatever capacity HDD SONY slips into the PS3. The first thing we'd do is go out and buy another drive of a higher capacity and swap them out. In instances the stock drive just wastes away in the PS3 box. Why not pass on the savings to us and let us get our own HDD?

I will add that I am staunchly anti-SONY (rootkit fiasco, DRM, etc) but looking at the options available to me I think this may be the best choice.

No, scaring people into buying something is when a VP of marketing says the following statement in July:

"Ooooh. We can't guarantee stock at Xmas in five months. It'll probably sell out! If you see one today, you'd better buy it now!"

#2 and #3 really shouldn't matter. I haven't heard widespread reports of PS3 systems failing like 360 ones did even shortly after launch. Granted, there aren't as many units out on the PS3 as there are on the 360. Plus Microsoft seems to be pushing back the 65nm rollout for 360 and it is sounding like the chip will be on the 90nm board to begin with. A smaller diecast doesn't always mean it's going to work better than the larger one, just cooler.

#6 I just don't see happening. Sony has to put a hard drive on the system because there are a LOT of games that copy stuff to the hard drive, sometimes Gigabytes of space. The hard drive has to be there baseline because there will be some people out there that will snatch it up and not buy a hard drive and then find out they need one for the games to begin with.

If you had the option between the two, I think you'd be picking the smaller die processor. Less power consumption and cooler operating temperature = longer hardware life and less $ spent paying for hydro. ;)

I see you're point and agree, I don't see SONY ever doing this but it would be great for those of us who would be purchasing an upgrade drive anyway.

This is true, but it shouldn't stop a person from buying a system now if they're interested in it. Given the trouble Microsoft has had getting the 65nm processor in, I doubt very much that Sony will have a 65nm alternative ready by the end of this year.

I'll come clean. This has nothing to do with Sony. I own all three systems and I don't choose any over the other if that's worth anything. I agree with what you say on the matter of me always saying something, but in all honesty, the only reason it seems so evident in Sony threads is because a lot of stupidity tends to come out there for no solid reason.

I genuinely mean no offense, it's just easier to be harsh when I don't have a lot of time to type. That's my fault.

PS3 owners don't have much to do with the PS3 being right there. :p

Sure, nothing as in playing Oblivion, Rainbow Six, Ninja Gaiden, The Darkness, 2k8 Football, Motorstorm, Warhawk, Resistance, Virtua Fighter, and Virtua Tennis. Let's remember that most PS3 users aren't 360 or high end Geforce/Radeon owners, and forget the constant implication that third party games don't count on PS3 because the 360 is a slightly less expensive machine to play them on. With potential goodies like Dirt, Skate, Stranglehold, NBA 2k8, BlackSite, Ratchet 5, Smackdown, HL2, Kane & Lynch, Assassin's Creed, Haze, Timeshift, Army of Two, Uncharted, and UT3 on the horizon for the holidays, this will be a good holiday season for PS3 owners with or without full backwards compatibility. Meanwhile I'll be playing thru my glut of unplayed PS2 games, PC demos, and discounted GBA gems while patiently waiting until 2009 for the Geforce 10200 and $20 Bioshock, Crysis, Fallout 3, Stalker, Gears of War, and World in Conflict. And hopefully PC ports of GTAIV and MGS4:Sustenance(or whatever they call it).

I considered purchasing a PS3 when it first got announced the backwards compatibility was being removed, but I still find it difficult to justify $500 for a system to play PS1/2 titles on, when I already own a PS2.

WALL OF TEXT THAT LISTS WHAT I SPECIFICALLY DO MYSELF IN ORDER TO COUNTER ANTI-PS3 STUFF.

Seriously, I'm a Nintendo fan, and I bought a 360 because there were very few games to play. I own up to the fact, not list off every single release that the system has that is 8.0+ to try to justify my decision.

Being a 360 owner, right now, is like being invited to the coolest party in town. We're having a blast, everyone is invited, you just have to buy your ticket. I feel like the PS3 community, right now, is the guys who are "too cool" for the party everybody's going to, and go somewhere else and have less fun for the sake of feeling better than the others (with the exception of Gorvi, he honestly seems to like the party he's at, even if he should visit both parties for MORE fun) The reason you're mocked is because you're missing the fun for no reason except to justify your decisions.

Also, the Wii is like going out for pizza with friends in this analogy.

Also, a large percentage of 360 owners are also trying to show how "hardcore" they are, and not just have a good time. Most of us are doing the latter, though.

Sorry about that, but my point was just the "nothing to play argument" no longer holds much w8 for the PS3. Personally, I don't plan on buying any new games or consoles since I already own a bunch of games I haven't beaten and feel like most games are overhyped and don't deserve the $60 or 10+ hours they demand. I need more Bioshock, less Halo. Since I can get that now with a 2005 CPU and a 2006 graphics card, neither console is "next-gen" in my eyes. But that's just me.

I always wonder about PS3 only owners. Almost everyone I know who is a gamer right now is playing 360 now and have plans to buy a PS3 down the road when the library is huge and the price is way down.

It is very easy to quote a bunch of games you enjoy on a particular system that got OK to good reviews. I could easily do that for the Wii right now, but I won't, as it would be a pile of self-justifying bullcrap. The short version is - if you try to tell me how much of an amazing time you're having with your PS3, I don't believe you unless your name is Gorvi.

Also, I can single-handedly show you while I'll be happier than you this Christmas in one word: KATAMARI. Suck it.

edit: Heck, I can bullcrap a list for the freakin' N64's first year if you want.

Actually, no you can't. As far as I'm concerned, nobody can. Katamari is pure joy in video game form.

There are very few games that I will not allow others to say can be beaten. Those are Katamari games, Phoenix Wright, and Mega Man X(the first one).

Disagree about Mario, disagree about Smash Brothers - disagree about Zelda. I care not. If you try to tell me any of the games above are not amazing games, we do not disagree. You are wrong.

Seriously - buy a used copy of We <3 Katamari. From my understanding of your tastes, you like eclectic games. You'll have a really good time with it, and it isn't a game that sucks up all your time, so it shouldn't interfere with your normal gaming habit.
edit:

If you play it on PS2 then you've played it on all other platforms. You can only do so much with the game. New music is enough.

I've been meaning to try a Katamari game, I just never got around to it. I do love quirky games, but Katamari just doesn't seem to have much depth. I get the impression from everything I've seen that it's more novelty than anything else.

EDIT: To clarify what I mean by "I like quirky games", I mean stuff like the scripts to the Mario RPG games or the overall feel of Disgaea.

Then rent it. A shallow experience is better than no experience.

Gorvi, I want you to be happy. Therefore, I want you to play this game.

Haha, fine, fine. Though really, I'd be better off buying it used, the thing retailed for $20 new quite a while ago, it can't cost that much.

If you're gonna judge my posts, judge all of them. Not simply the ones in which you make some sort of a connection and therefore validate defining me by them. My problem has very little to do with the PS3, it's more about the same bullshit comments we've been hearing for a year now. I have a problem with it yeah. Big fucking deal. What's it to you? Nothing. Don't try to be a hero.

Pretty much. And also the fact that you can get the 60gb right now for the cheaper price, and the difference between 60 and 80 is not that big of a deal, especially when you can slap on any hd you want.

You can't just slap in any HDD, the PS3 only excepts a certain physical size/type. The type it uses it slightly more costly than a standard SATA desktop HDD and you'll get less size selection but it's no where near the overpriced bonanza at Microsoft.

Grab the 60GB for the b/c and then if you hit the limits upgrade to a 250GB for less than $150.

Cute. And way late.

You must realize that some of us have been here for awhile and prefer communicating seriously than shooting the shit about Yu-Gi-Oh. There are a handful of people on this site whose opinions I strongly take into consideration and I'm happier that way. If you don't dig it, keep on truckin'. Oh, wait, this too serious? Let's discuss who would win in a fight then, Jesus or Master Chief? (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34283)

Gorvi, I want you to be happy. I wish I could make you happy, but our system choices keep us apart... It would never work. But I'll always be right there inside your heart.

This has been a horrifying look into what EvAv fanfiction by creepy teenage girls would be like. Thank you.

This is true, but it shouldn't stop a person from buying a system now if they're interested in it. Given the trouble Microsoft has had getting the 65nm processor in, I doubt very much that Sony will have a 65nm alternative ready by the end of this year.

Ah, but that comes down to personal preference ;). I figure I've held off this long that I am more than able to wait another half year or more if necessary.

Also, the Cell is already in production at 65nm:

In March 2007 IBM announced that the 65 nm version of Cell BE is in production at its plant in East Fishkill, New York. - link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_processor)

I don't imagine there will be any difficulty for SONY to integrate this into the PS3. The question is, when will the RSX get shrunk....

Chipset Modifications: Sony have removed a CXD9208GP, 2 RDRAM chips (US$5), and some passives and are planning on moving the RSX graphics chip from 90nm to 65nm production process and "the unification of separate smaller ICs — such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi — into single chip solutions and a change to a more specialized Southbridge." (cost reduction: unknown) - link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3)

I understand that newer versions (80GB model and after) have the EE for backwards compatibility removed and instead rely on emulation. This doesn't bother me so much as I don't intend to play any pre PS3 games on it.

har har, I've lurked on this site for years before joining, don't give me that shit. I myself love serious discussion too, you just have a habit of taking some comments way too personal was all I was getting at.

Glad those lessons in "how to be an internet douchebag" that Random teaches have paid off for ya. ;)
