Good Morning! (And if I don't see you: Good Afternoon, Good Evening and Goodnight.)

Again in the "Helping out the little guy." category, I bring you word of Apex Digest - The Magazine For Sci-Fi And Horror (http://apexdigest.com/), an independent chapbook-sized magazine of Science Fiction and Horror short stories.

I picked up the first two issues for $9.00 (including shipping) signed by the cover artist. The first short story was pretty good and I love the chapbook format for small press magazines (they hold up a lot better than a regular magazine).

Please help support this independent magazine and order a copy, or order both #1 and #2 like I did. Be sure to put in your PayPal comments box that you saw the magazine mentioned on Evil Avatar.com!

I love literary magazines that have short stories and articles about writing. I bought an obscure one back in college from our bookstore and loved it. Problem is, they are so hard to find in mainstream book stores. I'd pick up a copy each month of sci-fi/horror/etc. full of short stories and writing articles if I could find one. Also, I'm always looking for great outlets to submit short stories to.

Thanks for the heads up, Evil. (by the way, what's a chapbook?)

Are these comics? Is it like Heavy Metal?

no, Sion. They are magazines that contain short stories and other fiction. The cover art is nice, though, and may have belied the contents for you. But the insides are not comics.

A chapbook is a print form that was made popular about 3 years ago with the advent of print-on-demand publishers. It is usually the size and shape of a small hardcover book, bound like a book rather than a magazine, and around 100 - 125 pages.

A lot of authors thought that they could break into the industry by writing short novels and having them printed as $12.00 - $19.00 chapbooks a few years back. The format kind of failed for medium length fiction since the price was too high and the fiction too short.

However, it makes for a great size for a short story fiction magazine. It is more durable than a magazine and as you can see from these issues of Apex, it can be printed for a lot less than the $12.00 people were trying to charge a few years ago.

Hi Evil, thanks for bringing my magazine to your member's attention. Apex is a literary magazine focusing on dark sci-fi that ventures into horror sci-fi. We don't print 'howto write' articles, but we do offer several non-fiction pieces each issue, stuff like H.G. Wells Vs. Jules Verne, etc.

Issue three has MM Buckner and Brian Keene. Brian has both a game and comic coming out based on his popular zombie series, The Rising and City of the Dead.

And I've got a deal going now that if you buy a subscription (18 bucks for 4 issues...512 pages of Apex) you get Angeline Hawkes-Craig's latest greatest novella free from Echelon Press.

Check it out at http://www.apexdigest.com
