View Full Version : GameStop: We Sell Things & People Buy Them

GameStop executives are reasonably optimistic about the PS3 since the console's sales pace has nearly doubled following its price cut, and that it will continue to sell well through the season. They also think the GTA slip will be beneficial over the long run. Also discussed: PSP sales, 360 sales, Wii shortages and more.
From GameDaily (http://biz.gamedaily.com):
In terms of hardware sales, DeMatteo [Daniel DeMatteo-Vice Chairman and COO] noted that the price reduction on PS3 has doubled their unit sales from the prior sales rate and that "this sell-through has continued for weeks now." Moreover, the retailer is bullish on the sales pace continuing thanks to Heavenly Sword and Lair, which DeMatteo said "will sell well and we believe drive PS3 sales even further."
The theme of the call was clearly that price cuts do indeed make a difference. Although the price drop on the Xbox 360 was relatively minor, DeMatteo said that sales for all three SKUs nearly doubled. In addition, PSP hardware sales have increased almost 50 percent from last year's second quarter due to the price reduction, he said. "This has caused such demand for the PSP that supply has not caught up," he explained. "We expect that will abate in September with introduction of several new PSP SKUs."

The PS3 is finally selling, the Xbox 360 is selling even more, and the PSP has a new lease on life. Things are good.

Come on, Gorvi. Give it to me. You know I deserve it... This is my first ever somewhat postive PS3 post. Yay me.

Awesome. I expect thousands more to be sold because of Halo 3.

Go CaptStu! I don't know how accurate that's gonna be, any kind of sales projections are just guesses. If Sony markets HS and Lair correctly, they could end up being big sellers despite the less than stellar reviews. They both have the right look that'll make the mainstream go "wow", even if the quality is missing. Hell, they buy the Madden roster update every year, don't they? ;)

A positive PS3 post and you managed to get a jab in at Gamestop in the title. +2 cool points.

But, but, but... The PS3 crowd isn't buying Madden. The PS2ers are. :o

Bah, didin't you read your own article? It's the Gamecube people who are buying Madden! :D
"As an amazing aside, last week we sold almost 6,000 copies of Madden 08 on Cube;

No, not really. I basically skim for key words and focus on how those are used in context. ;)

Yeah, but now you have a Sony slant which is also bad. It's weird that in your introduction you didn't mention that the 360 also doubled it's sales with the price-drop (though it is included in the quote).
Seriously, all companies get positive and negative news. You should try to never spin anything one way or the other. Microsoft catches shit about the red rings of death (as they should - look how it made them extend the warranty for 3 years), and Sony catches shit because their sells are so low and their game library is weak. That's the news.
When did we start listening to whiny fanboys and start reporting the news with slant to appease them?

When I mildly re-worded GameDaily's intro. In no way do I listen to the "whiny fanboys". You obviously aren't very familiar with my normal posting habbits. I am almost never fair and balanced. I have my opinions. In this case, I was positive towards the PS products.

Exacly, but in reference to Gorvi's post, it's the PS2ers.

Retailers dictate the market. They sell we buy. It's called capatalism. Gorvi is right in saying that a sub-par game can be successfull, but is that not the reason for crappy games to begin with? Think about it.

Maybe that's been the problem all along. This capatalism thing has been working okay, but I think it's time to kick it up a notch and try capitalism.

If you support Gamestop/EB, you get what you deserve. Same for Steam, EA Games, and Sony.
Hand over your money, and with it your license to complain.

I've gotten another person to crack and get a 360 for Bioshock. That's 4 so far. #5 ain't far off.

I only buy their "exclusive" limited editions. And systems (cause a no-questions-asked warranty can't be beat). All other games I buy elsewhere (at mom and pop stores when I can help it).

I haven't bought a game at GameStop since the EB merger (a few years now).
And I buy a lot of games, so...cool for me! :)
I avoid GameStop, EB Games, EA developed or published games (95% of them), Madden (EA dreck to me, so never), and, generally, crap games.
I buy year-old or older games, mostly new (sealed), and only when it's clear they've been well received in general.

CaptStu, if you're refering to the replys in the forum regarding your own news post then ignore my post here because you can pretty much say whatever you want and have whatever opinion want when on a message board.
BUT if you were refering to your news post I would have to disagree with you about your attitude about taking sides. Evil Avatar isn't a Blog, its a Gaming News site (with attitude of course). If it was a Blog, you'd be expected to give your non-impartial opinion but its a news site. News reporting sites (or any normal news reporting medium) are expeted to report the facts and remain impartial while doing it. If a reporter does add in his or her opinion the person makes sure that it is 100% obvious that it is a personal opinion, and not part of the reported news.
Probably one of the fastest ways to kill a news site (Other then completely making up fake news) is to make a habit of taking neutral news stories and twisting them to fit your personal agenda. (Especially if your alterations completely change the message of the news.
Anyway, I hope your comment didn't mean that CaptStu, because I think when you post a story to the EvAv site you're name/article is linked to that story on the front page so you're representing EvAv.

I love when someone calls shennanigans on news commentary and this is the answer. As though it's okay to falsely construe news findings because EvAv's "EXTREME!"

I guess so. That is two or three times in one thread that I got berated for posting something slanting towards positive PS3 news. The funny thing is if I posted all positive Xbox news, I would have been ignored for the most part. Weird.

You know, I am thinking of retiring the thing. Only a few of us really like it, so we only routinely have a handful of participants. Why don't you give it a shot today? Maybe you'll have a better response. Maybe title it, "PS3 Gets Halo 3-Redux". Something to grab the peep's attention.
