The Folding@Home client on the PS3 is set to get a new update according to the Playstation Blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/08/21/foldinghome-update-2/). While the new update provides a lot of back end and computational fixes to optimize the folding process, there are 2 new gems in the update.

The display format is more sophisticated, giving the F@H client something closer to what's seen in biology books.

The other really great feature is Remote play support. For those that don't know what remote play is, it's the ability to hook your PSP up to your PS3 via a Wireless network connection and control the PS3 Cross Media Bar. I wrote up some impressions on it (http://www.bapenguin.com/?p=268) a bit back. ANYWAY...you can now remote play into your PS3 and kick off and monitor your F@H activities. VERY COOL!

... so basically, you use your PSP as a remote control?

Meh. I was thinking it allowed you to stream video and shit to your PSP. Kinda disappointed now.

Well, that's what Remote Play does. But not DVD/BD.

Actually, it lets you use your psp as if it was your ps3, assuming what you want to do is supported by remote play.

So, do you stream media on your ps3? Well you can turn on remote play and now watch that media on your ps3.

Do you fire up folding@home on your ps3? You can now turn on remote play and fire up folding@home.

There are certainly limitations, like you can't watch a dvd. I don't know if it lets you play ps1 or ps2 games. I've never tried.

Since purchasing my Ps3 I use it to watch the two blu-ray movies I have and let it run folding@home.

So now you can have F@H tie up both your PS3 AND PSP?

Tie up? It's not like it's doing it by force, taking away your precious gaming time.

Where's the "Is this the update that makes it fun?" comment that comes with every ps3 "update" story.

Missing. Due to the, you know, cancer element here. :D

Other F@H clients allow the user to limit the resources available to the program and continue to use their machine for other activities. There ain't no reason the PS3 cannot do the same. Make it happen.

Bap, I have no idea what you're talking about. Please explain what this "folding" thing is.

its a great sales job that someone did where 'they' get to use your computing resources to help them find a cure for cancer, so that they can patent it after the fact and then price is just right so that only 30% of the population can afford it, all the while putting 'stress' on your hardware (from just being on), decreasing its life span, and increasing your electric bill :)

sign me the fuck up!

kind of my pessimistic take on it :)

:) the way i see it, if there was a clause in there that if a cure was found and it had anything to do with the resources used from the folding project, then the cure would be provided free of charge to the world, then my ps3/pc would be running 24/7 with that enabled.

until then, why the fuck should i help out the private investors/companies.

So no cures are better than greedy companies coming up with cures?

if most of the earth's population won't be able to afford it due to the company wanting to maximize their profit through a patent, then yes.

anyway, wasn't there some article out there that looked into the whole project and did some interviews with actual research companies and basically the outcome was that the serious researchers are using their own farms anyway as the project provides insignificant resources in comparisons to what they have private access to.

if anything the project seems to have boiled down to 'clans' of websites bragging about who is providing the most resources, nothing more. now sony is using it as a pr tool to show off how powerful their system is.
