Straight from a BF2 Community announcement (http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/battlefield2/us/editorial.jsp?src=communityupdate_070805).
Community Update - 7/8/05
HOTFIX for Battlefield 2 v1.01 Coming Soon
First off, a HUGE thanks to all of you who emailed me in regards to the memory leak found in the update we released earlier this week (v1.01). Your emails found their way to our production team and they’re in the process of evaluating what needs to be done in order to get this fixed. In the meantime, and since the 1.01 update is causing memory leakage on some systems, we recommend that you reinstall the game and NOT the v1.01 update we released earlier this week.
Reinstalling Battlefield 2 will not affect your in-game medals or ranked server statistics. EA and DICE are committed to getting a fix for v1.01 as soon as we possibly can and will continue to keep you informed through this web space in the coming days.
NOTE: If you installed and are running the newer server files (Win and Linux versions) we made available earlier this week, please revert those as well. We found that those files had the same issues with memory leaks as did the v1.01 update. You can download the older versions here (http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/battlefield2/us/downloads.jsp).
Maybe this will help teach publishers and developers to build support for online games, for at least a couple of months after the game launches, into their budgets.

Incredible. This is one of the biggest games of the year, and they completely fuck it up.
The only way they could make it worse is if the patch formatted your PC. Awesome.
I can't believe such a huge game has such poor support. I'm amazed. The company can't release a rollback patch? We have to reinstall the 2+gb game? Ridiculous.

Don't think it'll teach anyone anything. Bottom line is, people will still buy sloppily supported games that are generally fun, myself included.

Yeah this is TERRIBLE. The new patch runs fine for me. This means that for who knows how long I will be stuck trying to find servers that haven't reverted (since I'm not re-installing) or getting error messages.
I think they owe us a free map pack for this fuck-up.

Guys, the worst problems with the new patch are server-side, not client-side. I've noticed the larger servers crashing far more frequently than pre-patch, probably due to running out of ram from the massive memory leak(s) introduced with this patch.
I don't want to reinstall until I find out a guaranteed way of backing up my config files.

I did a reinstall, it saved all my config settings, medals, stats everything. The uninstall was a snap as was the reinstall.

Guess I'll check the server list after I wake up, see how many servers are rolled back. I suppose if gamecenter rolls back, I will too, since I've been spending most of my post-patch days on their 64/64 servers.

Remember how I said patches that break games further was the beginning? Well forcing odd solutions (Like reinstalling a game, turning off standard graphical features, changing a 0 to a 1 in an ini file) along with rollbacks and splitting your player base in two would be the next step. After this, we see the advent of "The game is fine. Do not expect a patch for at least six months," to be concluded with lying interviews and "Fixes" appearing in the next expansion pack.

Guys, you knew what you were getting into when you bought an EA game. I mean it sucks that this is happening, but that's why I spend my money on other companies... The only EA game I see myself buying in the foreseeable future is Spore.

I think most servers aren't going to roll back. Most servers with admins (i.e. all the decent ones) are being restarted automatically every 5 hours or so. An ugly solution, but better than going back to 1.00, minus the hastle for the average user.

This is why I refuse to buy EA titles, and it's why I was in here before the launch telling people to send them a message by not buying their games.
I'm glad I didn't throw my money away, to make some executive rich off a game he didn't make, and dosen't really care if the customer is happy with.

Voodoo. The only one that got it right.
1) It's a game.
2) They all come out needing patchs.
3) Some patchs introduce other bugs.
4) Back to 1.

Shit happens. They did release a hot fix patch to resolve the most urgent problems (exceptions being the ID bug and a lack of a favorites tab) and did so reasonably quickly. It's not like EA didn't care in this case. Had they waited another week to do more QA testing people would've bitched a lot as well.

That doesn't excuse EA's QA department from being cockups though. :-/

To me, it sounds exactly like the first one. An unpolished, unfinished game, with vehicles that have little or no physics... If you can't tell though, I wasn't a fan of the first one either, so I'm pretty biased against this one.
Still though, from what I've heard about the bugs in this game, it wasn't just unpolished it sounds unfinished. Plus there was that whole demo fiasco...

I won't miss it at all. It's not the only cool game out right now. IF only the developers could have partnered with a better publisher, things would be different.

How is this game any more fun than the Desert Combat mod for BF1942? To me it looks better but is the fun factor better?

When I BOUGHT this game I kept in mind that it took them 2 months to get BF1942 fixed up and running right. I expected this game to be the same way. In fact, the problems that I'm having with this game are an EXACT re-run of the problems I had with BF1942 on my ancient hardware. :) I'm not sure why EA couldn't have figured this out and fixed those issues, but I'm not surprised either (afterall, they are EA-- we can't expect too much from them).
EA does suck. Therefore we must wait until the developers do their job and fix their game to make it truly playable.
I'm running an Athlon 64, 3600+ with 1GB of DDR2 RAM with Raptor 10,000 RPM Hard drives and a Geforce6800Ultra (overclocked). The game STILL takes nearly 2 minutes after loading to become playable because of the horrible jerkiness while loading textures (or whatever the hell it's loading). Yeah, that's just poorly coded stuff. They'll probably figure that bit out later. For now, I just want to actually be able to play.

I did notice that all of the west coast EA ranked servers seemed to disappear from my game browser. Hopefully they just didn't bother loading the f'd patch on those servers in the first place and they'll magically reappear after I reinstall.
Not to forget how we had to do this on occasion with BFV, which would sometimes leave things behind in the registry that prevented it from being reinstalled (try going through a registry search with a friend who ain't all that savvy - scary).

No seriously, the game's not that buggy overall. The browser in 1.0 was functional, if feature poor, but once in the game, it's essentially problem free.
There's only been one substantial in game bug that's bothering me, and that's the IFF bug. There are issues with VOIP setup, but I think that's mostly up to server admins to get sorted out (there may be a bug in there, but as it's a seperate application practically...). There are a handful of design decisions that leave me scratching my head, but those are design decisions, not really bugs or problems with the game (no chat between squad leaders, the way the teamkill system works, things like that).

I am content to wait for BF2 to become cheap to own, maybe around the time that it becomes stable and feature complete.
I don't give a damn about a server browser working, since I got enough people on Xfire to just join my frineds until I find a favorite server.
I just want it to work right, and let me join from the command line, as the game is fairly good... once you get by the fact the game is a gold nugget hidden inside a nugget of crap.

This game is good people. Yes, I'm pissed about these patches (obviously with my potty-mouthed outburst earlier, although that was at about 4am), but trust me, this game plays WAY better than BF1942 did for a couple months after release.
There are some problems, but not many show stoppers. For example, it blows that if you get _touched_ by a slow-moving vehicle you die. The teamkilling punishment system is a little whack. Fine, but these problems are fairly easy to deal with. But the game LOOKS incredible. The FPS elements are so much better. I play as a soldier almost all the time now, whereas in 1942 I felt there was always just something a bit off playing as infantry.
!942 sat in my drawer untouched for a couple months, mainly because the netcode was SO BAD. You couldn't hit anything...it sucked. BF2 is already good in that department, IMO. Yeah, there are still those times I go "WTF?! ! HAX()RZ B!THCES I TOTALLY HIT YOU F1RIST I SH0t U W1TH 3 CLIPZ GODDAMN!" but they are very rare. For the most part, if I get the jump on someone, I hit 'em, and I kill them.
I had a great time last night playing on the WOLF servers (just put WOLF in the name filter). Bit higher pings on some other servers, but there were LOTS of people using voice, now a requirement for me. It made the game SO MUCH DAMN FUN. A squad full of people communicating, using tactics, listen to the squad leader, etc. The WOLF gaming servers were where I found the best Forgotten Hope matches as well. Look for me there (usually on a < 40 person server...they have a 64-player server, but it gets choppy for me on my midrange rig) as -Snubber-0- (hex on the bastard who already took Snubber!).

"EA Games, Challenge Everything." Ain't that the truth. Even though I only paid 40 bucks for this game, I have every right to be pissed about this cluster fuck. UT2k4 ran like a dream right out of the box, no glaring lag, bugs and it had a very fast, stable and feature rich browser. It's obviously possible, not some urban myth of PC gaming that a product is actually finished and tested before it's on the shelves.
I'd gladly stop supporting EA products if they stopped producing fun titles, as mired in problems as they might be. I'd much rather EA just tested their games and released them after they were stable so I wouldn't have to hate some company and futily boycott them.

The picture I posted was me crying that BF 2 is screwed up. It sucks when I am doing damn good and then suddenly, the game closes and goes to desktop. I too was hoping that this patch cured a few of the launch bugs.

Hell I love the game....pain in the ass to reinstall but all the EA servers are back up and running fine as hell for me 1024 all at high getting 75-100 FPS
I haven't had any issues running the game at all. I'm using an A64 3000+ and a gig of DDR400 ram with a GF6600GT AGP. The only bugs I've encountered are that I passed 500 in the global score, and didn't get my promotion to PFC. I'm not well on my way to my next rank, and still no promotion. That, and the IFF bug. I have no idea how they missed that one.
I, personally, can't STAND VOIP. The last thing I want to hear are some pencil necked dweebs with their irritatingly nasal voices coming over my speakers, so I just turn VOIP off. I communicate just fine by typing, no need for a mic. I have no problems following orders and working with my squadmates, but their voices just kill my immersion. Maybe if they implement filters like they have for xbox live, so everyone doesn't sound like such a douche.

07-09-2005, 05:33 PM
kurr, then you are playing with the wrong people. Everyone I squad with is quite mature, and doesn't sound like that. And you gotta be KIDDING me if you think typing is as effective as speaking. The action in BF2 is quick, and so I think communicating should be too. Hands never have to leave the mouse/kb while I yell out that an Abrahms is coming around or something else.
I found the same crap with young annoying players on some games (and ESPECIALLY xbox live...god that was annoying), but on my bf2 servers, I'm finding mature players that don't sound annoying.

I was surprised how fun this was, having been a huge DC fan. I haven't played DC since.

I gotta say I like VOIP, but teams rarely use it. The popup menus where you can call for a medic, etc. actually seem to work pretty well.
The main issue I have with the game now is the being killed when you brush up against a vehicle. It makes it really hard to get out of a tank or apc when the driver doesn't get out as well.
How do you get the game to show you how many frames per second your getting?

I too hate voice chat in FPS's... I was playing Red Orchestra the other night, and these fucktards wouldn't stop using the voice chat to play music. I don't mean just for a second, they'd play whole friggin songs. Then once they stopped doing that, they couldn't stop saying South Park and Family Guy quotes...
I just want to ignore the general immaturity of the people I play with... is that so much to ask? I don't need it shoved in my face by giving them a voice.

They way DICE implemented voice chat in BF2 is the best I've seen yet.
Only 6 people can talk to each other at the same time.
Only the squad leaders can talk to the Commander (Squad leaders should have their own channel, but that's a whole nother issue).
You have to be in a squad to talk to people, if you're not in a squad, no talkie for you. If you're a smacktard using VOIP, your squadleader can kick you from the squad.
Also, commanders can mute stupid squad leaders.
snubber
07-10-2005, 11:16 AM
Yeah maybe that's why it hasn't been bad, because it's at most 6 people talking, and usually less.
Although I didn't realize the secondary comms button DIDN'T talk to all squad leaders and the commander. That is retarded if it only talks to the commander...
ÜberJumper
07-10-2005, 04:00 PM
Yeah, it makes it really hard for squads to coordinate activity unless the commander's really on the ball.

Our group of players has tested a couple of times and have had no success in communicating between squad leaders. It indicates you can do so in the manual, but either it's not implemented, or there's something the commander needs to do in order to enable it.

You need more RAM. I'm running an Athlon 64 3000+, with 2GB of RAM and 2 Hitachi SATA 2 drives, and it runs VERY quickly. I might have 10 seconds of jerkiness when I start playing, and it's not even that bad.
This game is a ram hog, pure and simple. Buy more ram, it's good for you.
