View Full Version : Bioshock Street Date Broken

Some lucky buggers are playing it early. By way of 2K's forums (http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3389) and the magic that is gamercards (http://forums.xbox.com/14658960/ShowPost.aspx) we can tell this is not some 14 year old with too much spare time and a printer.
Enjoy the game, lucky bastards.

They'll have sold it back to GameStop by Friday, and it'll be resold as "new" though opened on Monday!

I wonder if Bioshock is really worth all the hype it's getting, or is it just that people are SO starved for something different than they're jumping on Bioshock to fill their needs.
I mean, in any other climate in history, this game would not be this big a deal. Heck, it wasn't when it was called System Shock 2, or Deus Ex...
Im really looking forward to it, but I can't help thinking some people are going to be dissapointed. (It's by far the most wanted game at the current gamespy poll)

I'd like to get this early. I got Crackdown and Saint's Row both a week early which was pretty good, but I'm really waiting for Bioshock. In fact, I was playing System Shock 2 earlier today.

Made for consoles.. and there's a demo that people can play to get a flavor of the game before buying. If there weren't any demos I doubt many people who don't know what Bioshock is to hazard $60 sight unseen. :)

Yes, I also fear that this is overhyped. I played and loved System Shock, System Shock 2, Thief, Thief 2, and (some) Deus Ex. I don't doubt this is just as good, but worth the hype...?
I just hope there is some reasonable (logical) explanation for the guys in diving suits and little crazy girls. For me, the way in which the story and environment holds together is a big deal. They did a good job with the other games, but this one seems to be on another level of bizarre.
So, until I actually play it (real soon now)... cautious optimism.
Oh, and don't try to explain the story or environment: I hate spoilers. :)

If mine does, and the box does not have a "DO NOT SELL" sticker on it, I am selling them.
Thats the rule at Toys R Us, ignore what I know the street date to be unless it says so. Which is what every store should do.
But I dont think TRU has it, as Mature games are not really stocked anymore, the company isn't supposed to be doing Halo 3... because they hate money.

Anyways... the demo was just that impressive. I went from curious, to, ya I think I'll get this, to pre-ordering it just before the demo came out. And then I played the demo and was cursing for having to wait 9 more days for the game.
/Edited to fix my lyrical screwup after I got the song stuck in my head.

That demo was massively impressive. I was impressed with the controls, gameplay, graphics, sound, everything. That game really sets a high bar for the current generation of games.
I'm somewhat irritated about the broken release date. It's crap like this that makes distributors have to take steps that ends up costing consumers money.

I played system shock 2 and Dues Ex, I think I beat both or got very close to in system shock 2. I didn't play all the way thought the demo, but enough to get a feel for it; From that I'd say it plays a lot like SS2, Doom 3(did not play too much of this) and Half Life 1, but prob has less rpg management, but I'd say there are still going to be choices to be made. It definitely has a interesting story and environment.

This is the impression I get as well. I just finished the demo, and it mostly meets my expectations based on what minimal previews I have read or clips I have seen. However, it is way too linear and scripted for my tastes, i.e. Half-Life linear and scripted. System Shock, Deus Ex, Thief, etc. felt far less linear.
I hope the full game allows a bit more freedom to explore. Perhaps the demo is only the "tutorial" content, like the start of Oblivion... or perhaps the whole thing is this linear.
I've been noticing a lot of people commenting on the linearity of the demo; according to Irrational(*cough*2k Boston*cough*) in various previews, the game is very much like System Shock 2 and that you'll be able to freely move to and fro around and amongst the different areas as needed. With that said, you have to believe the demo is linear merely to get the player ramped up on what he can do and an idea of what to expect before "opening the doors". As you said Sarconix, Oblivion did this and as you all well know, thats the least linear game around (well aside from the quests :) ).
None~

This is good to know, though I don't expect it to be as non-linear as Oblivion, and frankly I wouldn't want it to be. Something like a "Metroidvania" game is about right. Very non-linear games have trouble maintaining a sense of urgency regarding the plot, particularly with the option for many simultaneous "side-quests."
Another thing that I noticed about the demo and indeed most of the videos is that all of the portrayed challenge / fun in the game comes from finding unique ways to kill the residents of this environment. I also hope there is more to the full game than that.

Street dates are ridiculous. If you are shipping it out a week early, then you should expect it to be sold a week early. If you want to sell it everywhere on the same day, then the onus is on the publisher to ship things out using a guaranteed overnight delivery service the night before and then stores CAN'T break the street date.

BTW - This is NOT just the Toys-R-us in Florida referenced on the 2K forum. I picked it up yesterday @ a Toys-R-us in Toledo, OH. :D It was lucky too, since they have a 20% off coupon floating around online. ($12 off)
The moral of the story is... SKIP WORK and go try to find a Toys-R-us that broke the street date. ;)

Isn't the LE currently only being sold by GS/EB. As much as I've been avoiding shopping there, I finally did order Bioshock LE from EB last night--online, though. I may get it a bit later but at least I won't have to deal with the inept employees at my local shop.
This is the first time I've bought a collector's edition in a long, long time. I'm a sucker for soundtracks, though, and that figure does look pretty sweet. Even though it's just another piece of nerd junk that I don't really need. :D

I think I will go to TRU and get Madden08 and then BioShock for that half-off deal. Then I will sell off Madden08 and then later BioShock for less than retail but more than what I paid.

Doesn't EVERYTHING have a street date? Or do they typically sell whatever they get as soon as they get it, unless told otherwise?
Still, even though I got the LE (and so I had to go through Gamestop), I'm waiting for it to be shipped to me instead of having to deal with the drones at EB/GS. I've got Overlord to finish while I wait, though, so I'm not exactly starving for something to play for the next few days.

Most street dated games have boxes that are clearly labelled with tape that has the date on it. Most games are not street dated though. Apparantly the Bioshock boxes didn't have the tape on them, which is probably why some retailers didn't realize they were street dated.

Because that is cost effective.
And I give a shit about that why? If a store has it in stock and I have the cash for it, then some stupid PR jerk's "street date" should have no relevance. Instead, I'll just skip BioShock and save the money for the 10 other games coming out the rest of this year.
In conclusion, if they want a "street date", then pay the money for overnight shipping. Simple as that!

I was one of the very very few lucky ones to snag a copy today in northern NJ, and I used the damn 20 percent off coupon. That was my biggest motivation for getting it early: the sale ended friday!
BTW this game has melted my face off which is why I'm not playing it right now.
