Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/07/06/news_6128669.html?part=rss&tag=gs_news&subj=6128669) brings news that the fifth huge free update for City of Heroes, Forest of Dread, will be made available in August. This update includes a new zone, Croatoa, for levels 25-35, including a new task force. It will also introduce two new villain groups and the anxiously awaited new power sets, archery and sonics.
Something to tide over the CoH fans until City of Villains. From what I've read on the forums, devs are saying CoH is also, surprisingly, currently at its peak for sales. There was a drop after the release of WoW and Everquest, but it's only gone up since then. A good time to be a City of Heroes fan.

Wow. Would have been nice if you'd posted this back when it was actually news.
ALL This information has been available for weeks now... Got anything new to talk about?

P.S. Sorry for the sarcasm... I just like to see fresh news on this site when I stop by.

The title and the release date was announced last friday ;)

Still, wasn't available for months. ;) And I don't think it was posted here, although if it was, I apologize. I was sort of in Vegas and out of the loop last week.

Probably wasn't - doesn't matter much either. I'm just looking forward to the release! New power sets might just make the game lots of fun again :)

Alright, everyone's got until August to level up! That is, unless you're playing a defender. In that case, take your time. :)

I love CoH, but I've said since the beta they should have set the power selection up like Freedom Force did. Sometimes you look at your guy and can't help but feel a little bit straight-jacketed and homogenous. :(
Still, great game, IMO, and the content updates rock. Can't wait for CoV. :D

I'm ridiculously excited about the cutscene feature CoV is adding to the engine and the changes this will bring as they go back and jazz up CoH missions. So much potential.

Not sure where you got your information. People were talking about the title and the fact that it was going be an August release back in mid-June.
But I'm sorry for being so harsh. :P I'll try to be good now.

CoH offers a big alternative to WoW and EQII, which is why it is doing well still. NOW RELEASE A MAC VERSION!

CoH is nice, and I liked it a lot for a long time... but the mid-level grind really does kill things for me. But I'm tempted to leave WoW and go back to CoH at least for a month. Being able to fly again would be nice :p

The new level 20-30 zone that's already added and now this new 25-35 zone both help with the mid-level grind a lot. Lots of new missions/arcs/TFs. Of course 35-40 is still horrible from what I hear, but hopefully that'll be the next thing they fix.
I was away from CoH from last September till a couple months ago, but it was totally worth coming back to experience all the new zones, mission revamps, etc. I figure I may as well keep chipping away at it now until CoV is released.

I tend to keep pretty updated on CoH, visit the forums daily and such, but I'd never heard the title mentioned. Of course speculation has been that it would be out August or September-ish since Issue 4 was released, but again, this is the first time I've heard anything remotely official.

The fact that we've seen 3 very nice and free updates for CoH already makes it a great supported game. Almost no lag in the game went through very smooth content updates with great server stability as well.
The only reason not play this game is if you just don't like the theme, everything else shines. Great product.

Doesn't help me much considering that I'm lvl 35 -.-
Oh, and there is the whole "We don't understand how to balance PVP in anyway," thing. I mean honestly, the lack of balance in the game is insane. I'm not really sure how they could really hope to balance it out for PVP though honestly, a lot of the super powers simply negate other people's powers. I mean look at Tanks, their powers center around not taking damage in a very big way. These are the guys who can wade through a group of fifty mobs five levels higher than them without a scratch on them. So how can anyone compete against them in battle? Short answer -> They can't.

I stopped playing about a month-and-a-half ago. I love the game but trying to balance the "pressure" to level and the desire to do all the missions and task forces just got to be too much. When I found myself playing three different characters in one week just to accommodate my desires for badges, fun and leveling, that was enough.
In other words, I'll be back as soon as they implement the long-promised "flashback" system where heroes will be able to set themselves back to a previous level (without hooking up with another person at that level) and play level-restricted content that was missed. Fortunately, by the time that happens there will apparently be a bunch of new stuff with which to use that feature. :)

Cool idea, and perfectly fitting!

I recently got back into the game after quitting back in May of 2004. I thought it was a decent game at the time (from having played it in beta and in the first month of release) but it needed time to grow. I'm definitely looking forward to the new powersets and such, although I'm surprised that they still hadn't delivered on a lot of things that they promised over a year ago (customizeable weapon graphics, volume controls for looping sounds: Targeting Drone, Super Speed, etc). Supposedly the invites for the CoV beta are being sent out today. Anyone have the inside track on that? ;)
Just as a sidenote, does anyone happen to play on the "Infinity" server? Thought it'd be cool to meet some other EA'ers there. My name there is CrackerJack (level 36 AR / Devices).

Flashback will be the most awesome thing ever if it ever comes about.
Also I remember a time when no one knew how to slot and called the game unbalanced, it wasn't. Tanks live and die by toggles, shut them off. Sadly what's good for PvE and what's good for PvP are completely different, which is going to cause problems.

Well, there are very few who can shut off toggles. Only a select few builds. That really doesn't help most of us. Not to mention that there are some other builds which are over-powered as all hell. Blasters get the short end of the stick really, with most of them having very few status effects and no defensive ability, which basically means they die once they've engaged the enemy. Defenders suffer from similar issues.

Defenders were always going to be boned 1 on 1 (except perhaps Rad). The game is built around teams, not soloing.
An Elec blaster with 6 slotted End Drain into one of their major draining attacks will have an effect. Also I remember the I4 patch notes, a lot of powers have special PvP effects, mostly toggle killing. You want to kill a tank, kill their toggles (or better yet their end), they're dead meat after that.

Well, maybe what I heard was only rumor.. but they were very accurate rumor. LOL
Either way, it doesn't matter much. I was just griping because I'm so much looking forward to this update, I desire to hear something truly new about it. :P
Also, I do remember saying Mid-June was when I heard this stuff.. that was really only about 2-3 weeks ago. LOL So yeah...

Whatever you say, Sir Hyperbole.
Holy crap. Sir Hyperbole would be an awesome villain. I'd better go save that name.
