Gamesindustry (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/) has posted a story (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=10006) regarding the developer Secret Level being tapped by Sega to re-created a yet unnamed classic Sega franchise on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Here's a bit from the story
The franchise the company will be working on hasn't been named as yet, but there's been some speculation that it might be Sonic the Hedgehog - although there's no apparent evidence to support that theory, and it is perhaps unlikely that Sega would outsource development of its best-known character franchise.

Secret Level is best known for creating Karaoke Revolution on the Xbox for Konami, and is currently working on America's Army: Rise of a Soldier on Xbox and PS2, as well as the Xbox version of Final Fight: Streetwise.

Personally I am hoping for Golden Axe. :) Just don't make it another disaster like Toe Jam and Earl.

Golden Axe was ace.

I'm hoping it's Streets of Rage. Really gritty and full of violence

I would have to agree with you guys, Golden Axe or Streets of Rage.
Golden Axe 2 is my favorite of the series.

I love the classic Sega, up through the Dreamcast days and some of their early Xbox work. Ever since then, it seems like everything they touch gets worse and worse.

It is a sad day when I dread the idea of Sega recreating an old franchise of theirs because I fear they will ruin it.

Shining Force for me.

Hmm... they're already making a new Final Fight.

Streets of Rage maybe...

After Burner wouldn't be too bad. But yeah, my first choice is Golden Axe. Didn't they release an tragic looking 'update' of it on PS2 already?

Please oh please let it absolutely rock.

They can remake anything: as long as it freakin rocks, I won't care what it is.

If I had to choose, I'd like any of the following:

Space Harrier
Shining Force
After Burner
Crazy Taxi
Virtual On
Daytona USA
Panzer Dragoon
G-Loc
Golden Axe
Hang-On
Initial D
Jet Set Radio
Out Trigger
Outrun
Sega Rally
Shinobi
Space Channel 5
Zaxxon
Thunder Blade
Typing of the Dead
Virtua Fighter
Virtua Striker
Phantasy Star

Gawd, I know there are more. Someone remind me what else they could possibly screw up.

Streets of Rage maybe...

Exactly what I was thinking.

I'd like to see these old companies come up with some original concepts. They're not gonna be able to milk these old titles forever.

Actually, now that you mention it... Thunder Blade would be -really- cool, mostly because we haven't seen much of it in a while. We already have outrun on the XBox and Daytona on DC.

TJ&E3 was great. It wasn't REALLY Sega though, it was Mark Voorsanger and Greg Johnson.

Outrun has been remade already and is effing fantastic. Sining Force has also been remade. I honestly don't know what it could be. The Sonic Team talked about making Sonic 3 using the Sonic Adventure engine. But I haven't heard anything else since then.

Shining Force has been remade??

Well yes, on GBA. But it can always be GBPlayered.

Shining Force has been remade??

As mentioned, there are the Shining Soul GBA games. Plus Shining Force Neo is coming out for PS2 this October.

It'll probably be some brawler, since they're squirting out a half-arsed Final Fight.

It'll be either; Streets of Rage, Golden Axe or Altered Beast.

My money's going to Altered Beast, since the market will be over-crowded with "urban brawlers" (50-cent, 25-to-Life, Getting Up, Final Fight, Urban Reign, etc.). Golden Axe already came out... it's called Lord of the Rings. :p

I wouldn't really count a GBA version remade.

Didn't SEGA already have some developer working on a pseudo-remake of Altered Beast, but it was cancelled, or something like that? I know I saw a preview (that looked pretty generic) at an E3 a year or two ago.

And, also, they did do a remake of Golden Axe on their recent classics collection, but most folks panned it, probably because it was almost exactly the same game with 3D characters and environments. Personally, I'd prefer a remake/redo of one of the Golden Axe sequels.

The new Final Fight looks awful, but then I wouldn't really blame Street Level for that since it's just a port job. Given Sega's recent track record with Sonic I'd almost prefer them to outsource the franchise to another developer, but I agree that's not going to happen.

I would love a new Space Harrier (or Planet Harriers, which was the sequel that never saw the light of day in the home market). It's probably one of my favorite games by Sega (though another Outrun, Panzer Dragoon, Daytona or Phantasy Star woould also be great).

Please let it be NiGHTS, One of the best games for the Saturn... and although it was a Treasure game... I want a REAL follow up to Gaurdian Heroes... the best side scroller beat-em-up ever made.

Streets of Rage, I'd guess. I'm not going to put money on it though.

I wouldn't really count a GBA version remade.

Have you played it? It got a graphical overhaul with new characters, strategy elements, and other stuff. It sure was remade+.

If they were making a new Streets of Rage would they pull it from the collections coming out?

I love these threads.

Oh, I would like a new Vectorman. that game was kinda cool.

If there is a new Streets of Rage, it better be ravertastic like the last ones, techno music and secret elevators in baseball diamonds that lead to underground pitfights.

I suck, I forgot all about Streets of Rage. Damn, that would be cool.

Speaking of Golden Axe, I was walking through Kmart the other day and saw one of those controller deals that you plug straight into your TV. You know, like the Atari ones and what not, only this was for Genesis (sorry if this is old news to anyone). There were six games that came with it 2 of them were Sonic games, and one was some game like "Tocky" or something...(cover was a cat looking at a bunch of blue birds and one brown one)...and then the good stuff...Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon, and yes...Golden Axe! I almost bought it just for those three games, but it was 30 bucks. Maybe when it goes to clearance for 10 or 15. I just wish it would have had some Shinobi games on it.

Vectorman would be a big let down. Another 2D classic translated into piss-poor 3d. Worse, the game's look was only revolutionary because it was a product of the technology of the time. How do you translate it? Make it look retro (The opposite point of the original) or change the design entirely?

Granted, I've never been very good with money, or had very much of it.

So there.

Hmm, ESWAT? Alex Kidd?

Shinobi? (although it did have a new title on the PS2 a while ago)

I'm guessing if they're talking "classic franchises" It'll be something we haven't seen in a good while. I can see Streets of Rage coming out now as it seems in vogue at the moment. Who is Sega to avoid jumping on the odd bandwagon?

Except they are taking it out of their collections to avoid a higher ESRB rating. Wouldn't they leave it in to promote a huge new release in the series?

Good point, but that's only in the States. The Japnese version will go out with the original games. No idea about Europe.
Besides "The sequel to the games too hot for (the sonic game collection in) America coming soon!" has a nice publicity ring to it.

Kid chameleon!

I miss that game...

Altered beast was kind of fun also. Both of those would probably end up being awful when changed from their simple side scrollers to 3d games though, that always seems to happen.

I can't remember if those were Sega first party games or not, regardless, I'm now tempted to try to find that Sega controller game system thingy (plug the controller into the TV).

Awww man i forgot all about Guardian Heroes :o

I played that game so much. It was a fantastic side scroller beat em up.

It was the best of its kind imo.

I imagine a new version of Guardian Heroes would need next gen power because it would need plenty of enemies on screen to get the same feel :D

fuckin eswat, that game was awsome

but no one remembers target earth? thats a shame, i loved that game
