There were some new Gran Turismo 5 screens released a few days ago. The ThreeSpeech Blog (http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=519) has the goods.

The cockpit views look so sweet.

What's up with the rear-view mirrors?

Other than that, it looks fracking good.

That cockpit view is pretty damn sekushi.

Nah, blow them up to full size, you can tell that they're in engine.

Seem 3D to me.. but I presume you are referring to the "car view" mode... that of course is not ingame.

Cockpit view looks sweet. Who started that whole thing anyway? Seems to have blown up in the last few years.

Cockpit views have been around for fricking ages.

Need for Speed 1 being a fine example.

I'm not overly impressed by these shots, they're hardly eye-destroyingly beautiful. Only one that looks any good is the Nissan 350Z coming down the straight head on and as usual that's from a replay.

The physically in game shots look like any other racing game.

oh man, the comments on threespeech are a bunch of bollocks

1. The graphics… duh! (I don’t consider my self a graphics whore but DAMN!)
2. The game speedo actually matches the cars speedo - nice…
3. Position 16/16. That means 16 cars in races. Sweet!

Try playing GTR2 with 22 cars in the race mate. And as for that speedo quote.. oh that's gold.. I think I'll go and check my car and see if the speedo matches it's speed... OMG it does! ;)

car models are nice, textures are not. game still looks good but we will see if the shitty physics carried over.

No, like the chairs and tables and stuff on those first screens. They look like Bitmaps.

Look at this screen: http://www.threespeech.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/grantur501.jpg

Then Look at this screen:

Notice how the camera angle changed, but the chairs remain the same angle to the viewport?

Maybe true.. but anyway.. those 2 screens are fake-ish anyway since they do not come from gameplay.

Is there anyone who actually plays from that view? Just curious, I find it mostly useless.

I play from that view all the time. Especially with a wheel.

Honestly tho, I can't take any of these shots seriously until I play a demo for myself, because I can't count the times that Sony has dropped screens, said that they were in engine, but then later said, "Oh, those were target screens."

I almost always use that view when playing a racing game, other than Burnout for some reason. It just feels more natural. The behind-the-car view may be better for screenshots, but the in-car view just feels better for driving.

The out-of-game screenshots look amazing. Little bit aliased, but what are ya gonna do.

The in-game shots have noticably lower resolution textures. Look especially at the in-dash view, you can see chunks in the textures, and the pavement/grass looks pretty bad.

I have to admit though that the out-of-game shots are pretty amazing.

I'm an unabashed Forza lover, but I'll say that those screenshots are beautiful. The lighting in GT games has always been stellar.

The cockpit view looks nice, but in any game I've ever played with it, it's something I check out for about two minutes per car then get back to racing. Cockpit views are just too limiting for me. There's no sense of peripheral vision. If a game offers it, I prefer the over-the-hood view as it seems to replicate my view through a windshield more realistically.

Is there anyone who actually plays from that view? Just curious, I find it mostly useless. When I played Dirt, I loved the cockpit view. It just felt so much cooler to be inside the vehicle as you slid through corners and jumped through the air. Plus, you had to actually worry about a cracked window and glare affecting your view of the road. Overall much more immersive than just a behind the car view.

I see that too. The trees in the background definitely look like bitmaps, and there is something not right about the objects on the first 2 screenshots. At least we can be sure that these are actual in-game screens. I think they are really focusing on the quality of the cars (which is what is most important).

Also if you notice the two below screenshots, shouldnt the numbers on the dashboard LED displays be different. If they are means that it is just a static texture placed in there.

verall much more immersive than just a behind the car view.

I understand the immersiveness of it all, and I admit it looks cool. But these views take away 50% of your screen because of hub/interior, which makes it rather unplayable.

Good to hear though people actually use it. It always felt tacked on as a fancy bit of windowdressing.

Burnout would be a disaster in that view I think though.

If it makes the game unplayable, wouldn't driving in real life be impossible too? Most of us use the cockpit view when driving in real life. :D

The car texture look slightly better than Forza 2 but the environment is very crappy....very very crappy compare to forza 2. Lucky they got cockpit view though...which the Forza fan are dying for.

Still, i am not a sim racer. I prefer PGR4! (nice texture, nice environment, cockpit view)

These screens look craptacular. They look good when they are resized to fit my screen, but as soon I blow them up it looks bad. The only redeeming quality I see in the screenshots is the high-poly models. The textures are very low res and some of the textures look like they were taken with a 2.0 megapixel cell-phone camera.

Hehe, I don't drive my car watching through a 25" tv screen sitting on the couch with a beer.

So far the best cock-pit view I have seen is in Colin McCrae's Dirt. I played the whole demo in that view, at the end the game was nearly unplayable in any other view for me! That reminds me, I gotta get Dirt.

If you look closely you can see in those screenshots that the chairs actually are 3D and do rotate with the camera, it's just that the angle is almost identical in both those shots, only the zoom really changed.

But look at the umbrella closest to the ferrari in the first shot and the chair directly in front of it. Now look at the same umbrella/chair in the second one and you can see it's slightly rotated. You can also see a bit more of the top of the base of the umbrella in the second shot since the camera is slightly higher

It really seems to me that the first two images, the "Prologues" are just real photographs with the 3d cars dropped on top. Or possibly a composite of a few photographs with the 3d car. Some of the trees in the first two shots look like they're missing chunks off the sides, so there are these perfectly flat lines.

What are you talking about? The in-game racing environments look no better than Forza2. Worse to me with the low res textures and just as jaggy.

Unless you are talking about the shots of the cars in the plaza. Those look good, but I normally spend my time racing in racing games and not taking pictures.

Yep, it's pretty obvious when you look at the people in the garage picture. The shading is way off, and you can even see the filtering artifacts around the edges here:

http://www.threespeech.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/grantur503.jpg

Your table/char example is another case -- if you look carefully around the umbrella, you'll see how it doesn't quite blend in with the background. It makes me think of Links LS.

Not necessarily a bad thing, just a little surprising if you expected the full game to be 3D.

The "hood view" is the closest thing to real life you'll have in a game unless you use some kind of head tracking device like there is for the PC. A cockpit view is impractical and a god damn waste of polygons as far as I'm concerned.

Absolutely my feelings. With a cockpit view, I feel like I'm looking through a car windshield with one of those dog collar cones around my neck. With a hood view, the edges of the TV screen act as the edges of the windshield.

That, and when I drive, I don't actually look at my hands the whole time.

Someone in the back seat is playing Pole Position, that explains the rear view mirror.

Well, the game is still a long time off, so any muddy textures (or low res mirrors) I can forgive, since it's not even nearly complete yet.

I'm not a big GT fan anyway. Actually, I'm not even a little GT fan.

GT 5 (http://www.threespeech.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/grantur504.jpg)

Of course, in terms of environment - PGR 3/4 is teh kingz!:p
I guess different racer offer different feature, you cant have it all.

Forza 2 - great customization, damage physic, Live multiplayer
GT5 - ALOT of cars, cockpit view, "some" said...better physic
PGR 4 - awesome environment, semi-arcade semi-sim, weather effect, cockpit view, nice texture, bike...ok, i am PGR fan.

Seems like a mixed bag, the cars look pretty good though they still don't reflect the sun properly. The in car view ranges from very good in certain areas to looking incomplete in others. Finally the backgrounds for that track I can't remembers name look bad, but the plaza background looks un-f*ing believable.

I'll admit it, I like graphics and they can sell help sell me a game. That doesn't mean that I don't enjoy playing old games any less, I still play Sonic 2 with my brother. It just means I really wish Forza 2 had looked this good. If it had I might have picked it up already. Too bad that best parts seem to be not in game :(

Oh and... THIS IS GT5 PROLOGUE damnit! Not actual GT5, it's a damned tech demo like GT HD was. Stop judging the final game (good or bad) on these shots!

Furtive

While I could jump in and nitpick these screens too, I think its going to be a game that looks a lot better in motion than it could ever look in still shots. That said, no amount of motion could save the mess I'm seeing in those rear view mirrors.

To be fair you're going to judge the game on what you have in front of you, and what you have in front of you is a game with two parts to it:

1. A slideshow mode where you can see your cars rendered in ultra-detail against a static background. Pretty.

2. The game itself, which looks a little bit meh from those in-game shots. The peeks I've seen of PGR4 have a much higher wow factor imo.
