EA has released the highly anticipated first patch for DICE's Battlefield 2. Every fix in this v1.01 update is a result of community feedback on the demo and retail game release, such as issues that caused the multiplayer browser to become unresponsive, game controls were not available to be rebound within the Options menu, fixed a crash with rebinding LMB, AI becoming unresponsive, and a few graphical tweaks...

just doesn't feel like a proper battlefield patch at only 13mb :D

- Fixed in issue that caused the Multiplayer Browser to become unresponsive.

- Fixed an issue where some game controls were not available to be rebound within the Options menu.

- Fixed an issue with increasing performance degradation on servers.

- Fixed a problem with shader caching on client/host : after the first map in a rotation, shaders would be loaded on the fly during gameplay.

- Fixed a crash with rebinding LMB

- Fixed a problem that caused environment mapping to not appear on reflective surfaces.

- Fixed a crash that happened when a client picks up a kit that doesn't exist anymore.

- Fixed a problem with AI when the game was paused for a long time: bots would become unresponsive and also shoot more accurately.

- LOD distances tweaked on certain objects.

After working at a software company this summer and last, I have gained a bit more patience when it comes to patches for fixes like this. Hopefully the next patch won't be too far off.

wish they fixed the TK issue. Sometimes you kill an enemy and you get a TK, or a teammember all of a sudden shows up as an enemy, resulting in the same penalty. Very frustrating ...

Lets hope the browser fix is sufficient ... that would be a big plus ...

Wish they added Favorites for the in-game browser...

This patch sucks. Not being able to play on most servers now because it takes them forever to update is one thing (although I thought they released the server files yesterday), but the fixes aren't exactly amazing either. No favorites menu? No friendlies showing up as enemies bug fix? Come on.

*sigh* It's a really good game (if not a great one), but the shit that is missing is so common sense it's not even funny.

The biggest thing that I did not like about Battlefield 2 is that they inverted the flight controls (mouse axis) and you can't even change them. Typical EA half-assed product.

Options > Controls > Aircraft / Helicopter

Bottom left of the screen should be a check box labelled Invert Mouse.

Nice, it broke my copy, admittedly warezed and no-CD' (but I bought it fully legally, safedisc doesn't work in my drive) so now I'm out of Battlefield 2 for a while!

Some patch, pah!

SUPER! Now the server browser is completely unuseable instead of just really annoying! Thank god for EA!

Oh joy! It looks like they lied about adding command line joining! Huraa!

Anyone else noticed that VOIP on servers has been working completely half assed over the last couple of days? It's likely just poorly configured servers, but seriously, half of them are borked.

bKangy:

If you bought it, you didn't warez it, you just applied a No-cd crack. Curious though, were you able to play on Punkbustered servers with the No-cd crack applied?

kickmybum:

What GigaFuzz said, but with the additional comment of "did you even bother to look at the system options?"

The patch is supposed to give you a patching failed message with a no-cd crack.

Curious, it just did nothing for ages on mine, so I eventually C+A+D'd it and carried on. Maybe I missed the message (I was doing about 3 other things at the same time) and it just went on.

I was able to play on PB servers easily, though, which is... weird now I come to think of it. I never thought about it, I just played :/

I had a "patching" message for quite a while (4 minutes or so) and then got a patching completed message. It takes a while, and the program seems to stop responding if you do a lot of things on the side. I think aborting the patch caused some data corruption. Reinstall the game if necessary and just let the patch sit there until it gets done eventually.

I need Win2k support! Bastards.

Anyone know any forums or anything where Win2kers are trying to get this peice of shit to work?

Anyone know of any GOOD servers? I wouldn't mind trying a ranked one, but overall I just want to find a good server with mature players using tactics, etc.

I have a good enough time on the CAD servers, though the main ones are public so you still get asshats.

Same thing here, which I find really REALLY odd considering the patch was just outrageously puny. Of course, I've only patched it on my work laptop which is, of course, running a goodly amount of apps. I'll have to see how my desktops at home do when the patch is the only thing running.

yea the patch just takes a little while and seems to not respond but it finished. I've yet to try the game with the patch installed but it did install.

Patch doesn't work for me. It says it can't find the BF2 install folder, despite the fact that I installed it to the default location.

Yay EA.

Path failed might equal low HDD space. There's a patch .log file that gets created...might help to explain any failures.

Patch went smooth as a whistle here, fwiw.

The browser still sucks. The only change I noticed, that I liked, is that if you try to join a server and fail, it still recalcs the server's ping, but it doesn't move it in the list accordingly. That leaves it right where it was on the first join attempt, making it easier to make another attempt.

Hopefully, next patch, they'll feel aggressive and do something crazy like LEAVING THE SERVER HIGHLIGHTED after failing, lol. A busy redial is of course way out of the question.

Also, found this wrapper that supposedly allows you to use All-Seeing Eye (haven't tried it though):

How about a friends list... that actually shows my buddies, if they are online and allows me to click on them to join them in combat.

They are storing the data as I can find the info here www.bf2tracker.com.

Whoah, just found a substantial bug in the browser.

To recreate:

Login to an online account, go to multiplayer.
Server list updates.
In the server name box, type a portion of the name of a server that you want to find.
When you hit enter, it will not find the server.
... even if the server's on the list.

Wait, it gets better! Try to browse the full list again by clearing the server name box and hitting enter... or refresh... or update list...
You get, NOTHING.

Server list remains blank until you exit the game (not logout, exit) and come back in.

GG EA QA!

Is there any way to disable the annoying movies that play every time you start BF2? I didn't mind them in the demo, but once I purchased the game I sort of expected to be able to launch directly into the game.

go into the your BF2 folder mods/movies and rename them all to dice.backup etc... ...don't rename the menu files though.

I play BF2 under Win2k. Works well most of the time. I'm dual homed here (two DSL connections) and it won't run properly unless I disable one interface. It takes huge amounts of RAM so, I have to shut everything off first.

According to that BF2 tweak guide, you can disable those as well.

I left the menu movies enabled, it lets me know immediately if the gui locks up, lol.

I just installed it and played a few games. The install went very smooth and all the very annoying game broswer lag and bugs that I was having issues with went away. As near as I can tell the accidental Teamkills of every shape and size remain unchanged. Especially annoying is the friendly appearing as an enemy which I can assure is still very present.

Overall I'm happy with this as a first patch but look forward to the various teamkilling issues to be fixed in the next patch which will hopefully be quite soon.

Has anyone noticed any degredation of video performance after the patch? The video is a little jerky now when I'm running around. Before it ran just fine at 800x600. I just used whatever default settings it picked.
