The not all that long-awaited Battlefield 2 patch is due to be released today at 12:00PM Pacific Standard time.

Among other things it's set to fix a few of the problems with the horribly unresponsive ingame server browser and key assignment menu.

Unranked Server Download
New non-ranked stand alone server files for Windows and Linux now available. Patch client to be released tomorrow at noon PT.

Also released right now are the unranked stand alone server files to support the new version of the game.

At least now there are only a few things to fix.

1) How hitting a person with a vehicle at .5 MPH kills them instantly.
2) The punishment system
3) The team-switching system
4) Hitting the Esc key to exit any menu besides the Main one still exits the window, but then waits 5-6 seconds before popping up the Main menu anyways. (my own personal pet peeve)

Don't forget the bug where your team mates can show up as enemies.

But hey, they haven't released the fixes for the client patch yet, so that may be fixed, who knows.
The fixes listed now are just for the server patch, as far as I know.

2) The punishment system
GAH! Yes, nothing more annoying than having a teammate pop around the corner, right in front of your vehicle. I usually play as a medic, so I instantly get out and revive them, but they punish me anyway.

Still, it's the best online game I've ever played, in spite of its flaws.

The one thing I hate more than idiots who stand in front of your tank are the ones who drive right into the artillery barrage. Thank god they can't punish the commander for their own stupidity on that one.

Lol netcraazzy. I haven't seen people drive into a artillery barrage but when i do i will laugh....hard. :D

I'm pretty sure they can unless I misunderstand the situation you are speaking of.

I like this game, although some of the maps are too big. I liked it better in the demo, when even 64 player server still only played on the 32 player map (ideal, IMO).

Yeah, actually. They can punish the commander for that. And often do.

Indeed. I've been punished a few times because of people's retardation. Bunch of lamer idiots! So un-woot.

Yes, it's damned frustrating. I end up not getting all the points I should have because fools are too stupid to realise that going within an marked artillery zone means that you are liable for your own damned safety. I also hate it when the squad who calls the artillery (due to being surrounded, or under heavy vehicle attack) punishes you, despite you following their wishes.

Grr.

When are they releasing the patch that locks the door on the Tank that I just moments earlier jumped out of to fix but is now screaming towards the enemy base while smoke billows out of it and I scream furious nothings into my squadmate's headsets?

This games a resource hog and a half, to much lag online for me to play even though the online demo runs fine with no lag. Gamespy is a joke........

Ok two questions while I have people's attention. How do you switch positions in a vehicle? In the original you could just press a different number and it would take you to a different spot. I've seen people do this but don't know how to do it myself.

The other questions is how do I call for artillery or radar when I'm a squad leader?

Personally the number one thing I want them to fix is the bailing out problems I have with the copter or jet. I'm in one with someone else and then I bail out. I then promptly die because they changed directions in the last second and I somehow brush the side and thus get run over by them.

A good commander is invaluable. With proper coordination and people willing to work in squads, some of those maps become incredibly fun.

A poor commander can really screw things up. I've been in a few situations where my squad and I are pinned down, trying to take a flag, so we ask for backup. The commander kindly sends an artillery strike down on our heads.

Too bad there's no way for the game to intelligently differentiate between a legitimate teamkill and some idiot running into the line of fire.

Anybody have a changelog for this patch?

F1 - F5 Changes your position inside a vehicle, F1 is always the driver/pilot's seat.

Hold down T while aimed at a location to give your squad an order, for example "move here" or "defend here". From this order pie menu, you can also request artillery or supply drops. You can do the same from a map view by pressing capslock and right-clicking the location you want to order your squad or support.

Problems I still see with the game.

1. After Lance Corporal gaining ranks takes for...fucking....ever
2. Helicopters are to tough I think. The MI-28 can take like 4 tank shots before it drops.
3. Needs to be a anti-air class similiar to anti-tank but heat seeking and maybe radar jamming devices
4. Bigger differences in weapons.
5. Make it harder to kill someone with vehicle collision.
6. Harder to destroy commander functions but also harder to repair them. Nothing like dying 10 times to take out Artillery only to have it fixed by a supply drop.

Question Uno: instead of the number keys you use the F keys.

Question Dos: Press and hold the T key and click select the action you want to declare. Or you can use capslock and rightclick the area in the map you want to call a barrage or where you want your squad to go.

Punishing system should be done away with or atleast have an option for the admin to activate it or not. I hate when I'm shooting at someone and then this retard jumps in the way going MY KILL! and he dies, I get punished? Or the time I rigged the bridges with AT mines, at the center so it's in plainsight, the guy runs over it with 4 of his buddies and I get punished. Atleast in the CAD/8BT server people don't punish for teamkills.

I was very lucky last night then. I had some true blue noobs on my team for sure. Maybe they didn't even know how to punish the commander :D

Ugh, I really despise the server browser in BF2, and the insistance on installing Gamespy with BF2... I mean, all I really want to do is have fun... I want to start up the game, be able to skip the developer and publisher logos at the start, apply working filters to the damned server list and hop straight into the action. If I find a good server, I want to add it to some sort of favourites list.

Instead, I have to sit through several stupid videos of DICE and EA logos, work with filters that don't work properly, then jump into a random server (no favourites fucntion) only to wait 5-10 minutes for it to verify my client or some shit.

I wish they'd piss off and let me have some god damned fun.

Maybe this is just me, or a setting you can change that I haven't noticed - but when I first log in to the multiplayer portion of the game - it automatically tries to find and connect me to a server (which takes forever). I often want to go to the server browser and find one for myself (so I can avoid 16 player maps, for example). But I can't seem to stop the auto-find, and often the auto-find tries to connect me to a full server, so after waiting 2-3 minutes to connect, I have to start over by myself! Am I alone in experiencing this?

Cupleix - don't use the play online now icon. Just the battlefield2 one. That will take you to the server browser.

I tend to forgive, unless i work really hard to cap a flag, and as im prone next to it private gomer finds it nessisary to lob a gernade at me. I wonder how well "karma" applies to this game.

As Meatgortex said, you can remove or rename the splash screens except menu.bik, menu_loggedin.bik and noise.bik in
\\Program Files\\EA GAMES\\Battlefield 2 Demo\\mods\\bf2\\Movies

Other Battlefield 2 tips I found are:
1. By selecting the weapon again (usually by hitting "3") you change the fire selector from semi-auto to automatic. However, some weapons like the medics gun will still only fire in 3 round bursts on auto.

2. You can curve the anti-tank rockets by continuing to hold down the right key to zoom and then hold down the left key when you fire.

3. Although there is no scope drift with the sniper rifles, there is bullet deviation. So if it looks like a head shot in your scopes, it may actually miss them. However, there doesn't seem to be an evidence that the bullet is subject to gravity.

4. You can take screenshots by pressing the "PrintScreen" key which saves the image in
\Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\Battlefield 2 Demo\Screenshots\

5. Here are some useful console commands, the most important is "renderer.drawFps 1" to show frame rates.
To open the BF2 in-game console, press the '~' key (or the key above TAB) to open/close the console. To see the list of command categories, press the TAB key twice.

renderer.drawHud [0,1] - Turns the Heads Up Display (HUD) on or off.
renderer.drawConsole [0,1] - Turns off access to the in-game console if set to 0.
renderer.drawFps [0,1] - Displays the current and average frames per second (FPS) in the top left corner.
demo.recordDemo [demoname] - Starts recording current gameplay and saves the file as demoname.bf2demo in your \Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2 Demo\mods\bf2\Demos directory
demo.stopRecording - Stops current demo recording

6. The Assault, Anti-tank, and Support classes have body armor. This reduces damage by about 1/3, but means you move slower and have less sprinting stamina.

7. You can slide down ladders instead of climbing down using the sprint key (shift by default).

Thank you meat, that is really helpful info.

I'm apalled that EA is still doing this with their games. Yet this exact thing is commonplace in the game industry. When someone makes a movie, do they forget to edit some of the footage? When someone writes a book, dont they at least try to get someone to edit the text? When someone makes a tv, dont they make sure it functions properly before releasing it to the consumer?

Honestly, I'm just shocked that a game in this condition made it to retail. Once you can find the patience to sift your way through the god aweful server browser/interface to the filters section, your browser might freeze for up to 2 minutes while it 'thinks' about what you're selecting. After you apply some filters, the server browser will again frieeze as you go to refresh. After the refresh, you might find a server you want, but it will most likely be full by the time you get there after the browser freezes 1 to 2 more times. Finally, if you're really lucky, you'll get into the game and it will be full of fucktards who walk in front of your shooting and then punish you for it, or your game will crash 5 minutes after starting, forcing you to go back through the browser again to find that awesome server which was not full before, but now is.

Right now, I'm done with BF2 if this patch doesnt fix this broken, lame ass game. I love playing when I get on a good server. I'm even close to saying it rivals Halo's multiplayer experience. When it works.

At the end of the day though, would I rather, a) Get on xbox live in 20 seconds and get in a match of Halo? or b) Spend upwards of 10 minutes getting into a game only to find it crash or full of idiots.

I'll take the xbox anyday.

Thanks! I was really hoping there'd be a way around this, I'm just not the kind of person who goes deleting and renaming files in my games just in case.

Patch should be out now, woohoo!

Does anyone know how to turn off all voices? My game seems to hit the hard drive a lot when I am getting voice spam and it causes some lag on my machine. I tried some voice slider in the menu and set it to 0% but it did not seem to do anything. Thanks.

how about the ranking system.

I've done some searching and nobody seems to explain it enough.
you have to be a sgt to unlock something?

thanks in advance!

You have to hit Lance Corporal, then the next time you boot up the game(yes, you have to quit out) it'll give a big congrats and then let you choose which weapon you want to unlock. Don't worry, when you reach the right rank, it'll be real obvious that you unlocked a gun. Its also 1 gun per rank unlocked after that. And anything higher than Lance Corp. takes for friggin' ever. If you look around the web for info on medals, there's a site with a list that shows what all of them take to get. If I find it again I'll post it here.

The way I would do it, if they asked me: Giving an artillery warning to your squad would automatically waive their ability to punish you for the TK. Simple enough.

While they're at it, they could make an artillery strike automatically broadcast, even to non-squad members, that a strike is imminent. This would go along with the above changes.

There is just no reason you should be punished when, even without a verbal warning, there is a GIANT RED BULLSEYE floating over the target on the minimap. And yes, everyone should be using the minimap, period. This helps avoid TKs from even infantry combat.

And sometimes, I choose to ignore the artillery warning and move right into the contested area. I don't think my commander should even get a TK for that.

I figured it was just a really excited description for the shortcut, not that it made the game behave differently.
