While chatting to Criterion's Alex Ward, Gameplayer (http://www.gameplayer.com.au/Home/NEWS/NEWS/tabid/1482/Default.aspx?CID=b7eece5f-f5a6-452a-946d-187314604c6c) unearthed some goss on the developer's plans for downloadable content with upcoming crash-fest Burnout Paradise.

We were expecting new cars or maybe new skins… that type of easily implemented stuff. However, it looks like there are much bigger plans in place for Burnout Paradise. Alex commented that Paradise City is built in such a way that it can grow beyond its current dimensions.

Umm...woot?

Seriously, if they stick to this and do it well, I am ALL for it. I'm glad to hear they are going in that direction, but just give me the game right now. I'll worry about DLC stuff later.

This is an awesome feature. I wonder how much they will charge for it though and how much content it will actually provide. Still, this is very cool.

wow.... just wow... that further solidifies this as a must have.

After finding out about the open city sandbox gameplay, I think they are taking this in the right direction. I can only imagine how large their City is going to be, but think about it growing in such a way it becomes a whole new city right next door, or rivaling that of the size of THE KING of free roam racing, Test Drive Unlimited. Yea, I know thats not going to happen but the possibility is there.

It's gotta be huge from the start, this IS the FASTEST STREET Racing game created and you never go slow unless you're crashing or turning.
I would not hesitate in buying all of this type of content up, day one of their release.

Hells Yes to Criterion!

Out of the box, it's the size of San Francisco.

So this means they can add on Oakland?

...why would they want to do that?

My only concern is how much EA will be charging for all of this...

Why don't they finish the game before they start talking about DLC. It almost makes it seem like they're holding content back just so they can sell it for more.

Hmmm the same was said about Crackdown I'm sure and that doesn't seem to have materialised.

If it happens, there'll be maybe 2 and then they will just work on the next yearly game.

Why do you think that it would be Oakland specficially? It's the size of San Francisco. Not San Francisco itself.

I have serious concerns about this game...just after playing Burnout 3/Burnout Dominator some the other day. What makes Burnout work is that the track design is made for speed. I'm not sure you can create a sandbox style path finding racer and have the same effect. Sure you CAN go fast...you just won't often. As well, different paths mean less combat driving..the best aspect of the modern Burnout games....

I have the feeling this is another case of the all too often situation where more power results in a worse game.

...and that feeling runs counter to the opinions expressed by every gaming journalist who has seen the product.

Just an FYI. :)

Here's hoping the new 'connection' between EA and MS doesn't give the 360 version an unfair advantage over the PS3 version. If it's another 60 vs. 30 war, I'm gonna start the ol' EA boycott once again.

Actually, Imagine if you could download the crackdown boroughs into Burnout.
Or the GTA cities?

I know, I'm delusional, but in a good way.

So long as the final product is good, I'm all for this type of downloadable content. When Nintendo first announced Super Mario Galaxy, I thought it would be interesting if you could go later and purchase new galaxies, but, really, this sort of thing works better in a open-world game, which Burnout Paradise seems to be.

I have no problem with DLC in general, so long as they aren't cutting features that should clearly be in the game to begin with or that other versions have, like that whole Madden jersey/stadium thing (at least I think it was Madden, I don't really follow sports games that much).

This game was awesome to begin with and every new bit of information just makes it seem better and better!

All the "EA hate" or "wah... they're gonna charge me more for the game" are just gonna be people who miss out on what looks like a great game.

Except for customization, I don't really see any reason to get another arcade racer.

EA/Criterion/Microsoft/Fry's/EB/whoever is getting my money, day one! I don't care, a good game's a good game!

So just release it!!!!

Probably around the same ballpark as the Shivering Isles expansion pack. That would be of a similar level of content.
