View Full Version : UK man convicted for selling modified Xbox's
First ever conviction for modifying a videogames console (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/nid/1036/) has been issued to a 22 year old man who was chipping Xbox's.
The man convicted has yet to be named, but has received 140 hours of community service and a fine of £750. The 22 year old Cambridge Graduate was found guilty under the EU Copyright Directive, which basically rules that it is illegal to bypass copy protection systems on devices such as games consoles. The man's equipment has also been seized: three PCs, two printers, three Xbox consoles and 38 hard drives.

Justice is served.
Piracy is naughty. Selling Piracy via a website is just stupid :D

Seriously, the news sites keep listing this as if it was the modding that got him busted. Including 80 games along with the mod is probably what got the authorities interested.

...and 38 hard drives. Good god that's a lot of disk space. No way that's full of nothing but X-Box games, unless they're all 20 gig hard drives.

Yeah, I'd say he crossed the line by selling the systems with a bunch of games loaded on the harddrives. Now if they were prosecuting people just for modding Xboxes even though they were not pirating games then I'd be a little upset. I'm planning on modding one that I got from a friend and turning it into a linux web server.
I can make my xbox a web server??????????? Ok I'm doing it.

Selling games I can understand but the modding is the same principle as buying a CD you can't play unless DRM says you can. Once its bought, it doesn't belong to Microsoft no matter what they say. Live does and they can decide they don't want you to use it if its modded (Which is wrong, especially since you're paying for it) but you can take your Xbox home and take a leak on it if you wish.
Its yours. And if you want to mod it to play imports thats your business. If you want to hurl it out of a 10th story window thats your business.
But yeah, selling games I can understand, thats basically theft and making profit off someone elses work.

80 games per Xbox, I can't even think of 80 Xbox games!
I say throw the guy in jail for a good long while for selling other peoples work.

Yeah the 733MHZ pentium III processor in the xbox is fast enough to run a basic linux webserver. You have to mod it before you can put linux on it and add a larger harddrive but since the xbox I got from my friend has a bad HDD it's a good candidate for a little bit of warranty voiding fun.

Well, it still depends on your legal system. Illegal is illegal whether we want it to be or not (though by all means, campaign to your government to have bad laws changed).

That was my first thought. Unless he has a lot of evidence sitting in the printer queues, that seems silly. I guess Justice just wanted to give him an extra kick in the pants.

If I remember correctly, at least one games store in the US has already been busted for modding and selling Xboxen.

I like it because it makes me think of a Nintendogs-like Xbox game where I get to raise cattle. Take them for walks, play frisbee with them, butcher and sell them.
I think I dreamed it.

Man, when this headline is modified to reflect what really happened-- "UK man convicted for selling modified XBoxes with illegally copied games"-- it's less interesting. Well, it's a no-brainer why the important bit was left off, then.
