For those of us who play Halo 2 on Live, we know that Bungie is fighting very hard against modded maps for Halo 2. The Halo 2 modding community is very active and is a testament to all the stuff Bungie put into the game.

Check out the movie (http://files4.mythica.org/halo/halogt/descension_halogt_tsf.mov) of the mod that won "mod of the month" on Halomods (http://www.halomods.com/).

Who knows.. maybe in the future, the XBox 360 market place could be a good home for modders and maybe a "legit" way of making modded content without breaking online play.

I agree modding is a good thing in general.

I personally haven't encountered any serious cheating in halo2. The most i've experienced is people commiting suicide and that was only twice.

Mmmm according to the video, it looks like a confusing pile of crap.If thats the best this month then

I don't like the thought of modding on consoles(not at the mo anyways). Keep modding to PC.

That site seemed kind of suspect to me. I read all their lipservice about how they arent out to ruin the XBL community and how they have just "removed" all of this information and closed their forum. Seems like a reaction to Bungies recent hard line and unveiled threat more than anything else. Now the site appears to be kissing up and trying to seperate itself from other sites by acting like they are responsible and reporting abuse from others.

As cool as mods are in theory, sites like these only assist more cheaters and ruin the honest gamers experience online. I hope *** and Bungie puts the smack down on *all* sites like this including this one.

For me, the modding community of a game often becomes the very essence of the reason I play the game. Take Morrowind for instance, one of the best modding communities around right now, and for a single player RPG no less! I still start up Morrowind to this day, and am able to enjoy it IMMENSLEY just because of the mods I can add to change the gameplay a bit. A new race to change things up, maybe some new sidequests or equipment? The day the console world gets a modding community like that is the day PC gaming loses it's advantage, which means more console > PC purchases when it comes to multi-platform releases.

From that video all 'modding' is is hacking textures, lighting colours and other simple values. Not exactly the saving grace of Halo 2 (not that it needs one).

I just don't understand Bungie and why they would fight modding. Modding is what kept games like Half-Life (and many others) selling tons of copies long after the original game had hit the bargin bin. Modding keeps people interested in your game. Bungie makes money and the fans are happy. Where is the problem with that?

The problem is not modding in general, the problem is using modded maps in LIVE matchmaking when others do not have the same modification. This creates an obvious unfair advantage if someone, with the aid of a modification, can just jump around at will, use an automatic BR, and run 1000 mph while everyone else is confined to the constraints of the original map.

I love mods - I hope one day Live matchmaking will have mod-sections and non-mod sections. As long as everyone shares the same advantages, it's fine. It is when mods are used to gain an unfair advantage that a problem arises - it is no fun for the other guy. I played a guy who modded Warlock and it was frustrating to the extreme. Thankfully this has only happened to me once, but imagine if it happened every other game? Even every four games? I would stop playing Halo 2.

Which is what Bungie is afraid of, and rightly so. Modders using unfair advantages to win at the expense of people who just want to play and, in effect, turning casual gamers away from the online experience and perhaps gaming in general. I, for one, hope Bungie lays down the banhammer on every last bastard who uses a mod to gain the upper hand. I already reported the chode who modded against me. Halo 2 rules!

That video was interesting. However, it seems pretty obvious that it was done by some overly excite 14 year old who tried to throw in every stupid tick he could find. In the end, he just ended up creating a huge mess.

The problem is that you didn't read enough to understand what's going on.

Agreed, mostly. I'd also like the ability to play smaller Java, Flash, and homemade stuff in some way. The major loss I regret from abandoning PC gaming was the smaller things people make just because they want to. I've got a couple of Japanese 2D platformers that I keep playing, even though I have no idea what the story is. I was lucky enough to find OSX ports, or I wouldn't be playing them at all. It would be nice if MS or Nintendo built in some sandboxed Java and Flash capabilities and let people play around with them.

Ahhh, the Mighty Prick let's us in on his infinite wisdom! I see! I must have missed the secret word that let the large peni of the world know what "modding" really means.

My most humble apologies for voicing an opinion but not phrasing it in a flaming and personally attacking way. I most certainly bow to your infinite purple headed wisdom, oh Great Sacked One.

And to those who's minds aren't clouded by a helmet shaped protrusion I was thinking more of the PC mod community and online play where only those with the modded maps can play the modded round. That's a lot of modded. It is certainly no good if one person is modding (and in effect cheating) and others are not in Halo 2. For Phallus Face, that means: if everyone is playing the modded round with modded map/options it could be good. If only one person is, it's bad.

You are right! If only I'd read enough of my own post to understand what was going on!

Two types of modding. Modding to create a new and positive experience for everyone and modding to cheat.

As for specifically Halo 2, I've been a victim of modding to cheat. I have seen some skin modifications, which has no affect on game play, but modding, in general, in my experience with Halo 2, has been negative.

As for making money, how? The people who are modding already have the game people are not going to go out and buy a game to play a modded version, that doesn't make sense to me. **As a regular guy that doesn't already have Halo 2, I'd go out and buy it to play a modded version?**The only people making money are the ones creating the chipsets or software to do it. I don't see how Bungie is making money. Please explain.

I owned Morrowind on the XBOX first. When I saw how good the modding community was, I went out and bought it for PC too.

I bought Unreal Tournament 2004 to play mods.

I bought Quake III to play mods.

The Sims/Sims 2 wouldn't of been worth the CD it was printed on without the mods.

My interest in Warcraft III was peaked when I found out that it was moddable, and only then did I buy the game.

A lot of people here have mentioned Morrowind mods. What are some mods that might make Morrowind worth reinstalling for me?
