I think I'm blind now. The pictures were nice, but the comments section was truly astonishing. Every time I go to another site I praise Zeus that this forum is free from these idiots.

From Jason "turst me sony will rule the gaming world nintendo is not even going after the top spot they want to be the second console in the house micor is trying to take sony crown and that is a big mistake and by the way xbox is sharing there 512 mb"

And from fellow poet jettaknight "cake this poo poo man!! my friend lives in dat building!!!! u 360 lovers are scoundrels, keep hiping up xbox man, wait till ps3 comes out and sells 5 times more than it!! peace out!!! this aint hating either its the truth!! u aint ready!!!"

Let's all join hands and prey for these poor souls.

So... this game... is it about racing or slow site seeing tours of towns in a ordinary car?

This forum is not free from idiots. Here, they may not be as prominent a group as other gaming sites, but they still exist. That's why I almost exclusively come to Evil Avatar. I was young and dumb once, but I dont think I was ever retarded. Going to some of those sites or forums is like reading a gaggle of Electronics Boutique user reviews--it makes my brain puke a little.

Actually I would prefer that. One thing that ruined PGR2 for me was the super fast cars that everybody used in multiplayer.

Haha, that's more like it! I hope the rest of the game gets as much attention as the scenery.

You only get to see the pretty scenery when you come to a complete stop.

By crashing.

These pics are nice, but there's no context with the game, how will these objects look in the finished product? These just look like developer demo shots, everything max rez/max detail...

It's probably from the part of the game after you've trashed your car and have to walk back.

If I hadn't seen the wireframe counterparts, I might be hardrpessed to believe that those aren't photos. Now, I know that the game ain't going to look that good when they've got a whole street to render, rather that one building, not to mention a bunch of cars and some AI, but I still think it's very impressive. It's a bit difficult to say, but I think that may even be better than any of the Unreal 3 shots we've seen. But again, Unreal 3 has actually been seen in motion. I find it very hard to believe PGR3 game will actually look like that.

Other games simply do not try to make the game have photographic quality due to the amount of texture memory required. Photographic textures require a lot of memory for each individual texture and most textures are unique. That really eats up memory quickly. I can't imagine that 512MB of memory is going to be enough in order to allow such high quality textures while rendering an entire cityscape including all the dynamic objects like people and cars. Even then, swapping textures in and out from main memory is slow, so the frame rates would likely suffer as well.

It's just a matter of time until someone does make a game that is truly photographic quality. The whole concept really started with Max Payne. These guys are just taking it a step further because the Xbox 360 essentially has a higher minimum spec than the average PC that Remedy was targeting.

I thought there were some PGR3 trailers floating around?

Those looked great as well, if the final game looks this good, I will drop my jaw, shut up, and buy this game.

(I expect it to be fun because it is Project Gotham and I liked the last 3 games from Bizare)

They are not going to look as good as those trailers. A quote from the Bizarre website states:

"Please bear in mind, however, that you're still looking at a work in progress video game, and that the final in-game effects and lighting aren't even in place yet."

While in the trailers it is quite obvious that pretty advanced lighting is in place, so I would have to say that the trailers are not in-game footage. I'll eat my shorts if it turns out to look as nice as the trailers.

Max Payne started the idea of photo-realism? Not really...

Anyway, developers and more and more often finding ways around brunt memory use and texture-rez. Bump mapping, and then normal mapping was a way to get detail onto objects without having to model it, and procedural textures and becoming more and more common. I think it's more a matter of software becoming what it could, rather than hardware becoming more powerful.

While it looks amazing and sweet, I won't be horribly shocked if it turns out looking exactly like it does in the trailers. The reason why I say that is because PGR2 already looks amazing. The developers have a habit of increasing their gameplay AND graphics expotentially. I'm looking forward to it. :)

Seems to me they are quite fake. Which is a shame really..

My evidence is that both shots are in resolutions higher then whats offered through Hi-def tv. While I suppose its possible for the xbox 360 to have support for higher resolutions then hi-def tv methinks thats unlikely.

So what we're looking at are some nice hype shots rendered using their game engine most likely but the level of detail will probably be cut down for the final product. Or such is my opinion.

Que? Those two shots are 1112x960 and 1280x960. HDTV resolutions are between 1280x720 and 1920x1080. Thus, both pictures fall squarely into the range of "true" HDTV.

Alright, I'll bite. What 3D game do you know that came out before Max Payne that went the route of photorealistic texturing? I'm curious.

Morrolan

If you're saying that Max Payne was a major step towards photorealism, you have a point. But it had nothing whatever to do with the goal itself.

I'm not sure what you mean by photorealistic textures. It's not as though earlier games were shooting for some highly stylized look. Max Payne was a great looking game for the time, but it was not any sort of shift in the philosophy of graphics. Hell, Half Life did a lot to make things look photo-realistic. As much as could be done with the Quake 2 engine, anyhow, and that came out long before Maxy.

Actually, dojoteef do have a point. I've been a texture artist (hobby though, not professional) since HL1 first came out, and Max Payne created quite a small revolution in the community I was in. It was the first game to use actual photos as textures (that I know of), instead of using painted textures. Back in the old days, photos was mostly used as reference material.

Kingpin did.

Very pretty. For a (semi) realistic racing game, I'm not surprised the graphics look this detailed. I do question whether games like Gears of War will manage visual continuity at this level of detail. I don't particularly like the art design in Gears, but I'll admit everything we've seen thus far has fit together well. How many games are going to achieve that?

dojoteef
07-03-2005, 07:03 PM
Kingpin did.

Kingpin went for the urban look, but it had hand painted textures as opposed to using photos for source material. There are other games that were similar to Kingpin in style, for example the original Soldier of Fortune game. The point stands though, games like Kingpin seemingly used photos as reference material as opposed to source material.

Okay seriously I give, why is it so hard to belive a Microsoft racing game is going to have flat out amazing backgrounds? Have you guys screaming fake even played a freaking MS racing game before? Give it a rest already.

Well... it seems a bit more likely than those Killzone 3 videos.

It's not like they are pushing what can be done that much, but now we are into the point were any part of the game that does not look that good will stand out for looking bad.

I don't know if they can make 1 track look that good, let alone 10-30 or however many they are going for.

I'm confused.

Why do I want the ambient scenery of a racing game to look that good? How the fuck am I supposed to concentrate on the track and my car with stuff like that just off to the side?

Guess it makes multiplayer easier if you can concentrate harder than other people.

So that, unlike other racing games, when you are taking a slow turn or going down a straightaway, your eyes aren't immediately drawn to the ugly-as-hell 2D people/trees, etc..

So, you would rather have it so you can only see the road in front of you, the other cars on the road, and have the rest be white space? Sounds like you should be playing F-Zero on N64.

I was reading the comments about this news item and thinking that some people were really weird about theire responses... Especially those claiming that this is fake (which I don't think it is, judging by the developers past track record, and all MS racing games for that matter). I think it's amazing how many people lower themselves to sounding like morons before they actually see a game in action. This must frustrate developers and publishers like nothing else could.
HOWEVER, there is a nice thing about people like the guy I quoted. He makes all the OTHER retards on this forum look incredibly brainy and smart. That's a plus for all of you haters who whine "Fake" and "pointless" about everything.

Good game sickfallout, you've won the stupidest reply of the week award.

It's all about immersion. Do you pay attention to all the real scenery while you are out driving around town?
