According to a news post on PSP Updates (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Official-ISO-loader-found-in-FW-3-50-3-51/pg/49/aid/96433), the two latest PSP firmwares include an official ISO loader component:
More news from the PSP homebrew front. Mathieulh has explained on the Devsgen PSP forums that Sony has included an official ISO loader in PSP firmware versions 3.50 and 3.51. The loader is called np9660.prx and will apparently let PSP users load ISO files off their memory sticks.
Are we finally getting downloadable games for the PSP?

It would be great if this means that the PSP will now play any PSone whose disks you have handy... I never did finish FFIX.

I believe the hacked firmware can play FFIX and any other ps1 game

I know, I just want it to be official... I was reluctant to load up the hacked firmware since nothing aside from PS1 support interests me, and the odds of my honestly using that feature are fairly slim. If Sony made it official, I might reconsider.

That is awesome (and kind of hints to the long-coming revision of the PSP.)
Foremost is the fact that loading games off the memory stick (or flash memory) extends the battery life by a massive amount, since the UMD drive takes quite a bit of battery life to read the discs. This would help out with games that use the 333Mhz clock speed.
The only reason they'd put and use this feature is if all new PSPs had a few gigs of standardized storage, most probably flash memory, and hopefully this means that either the PSN gets PSP games on it, or that store thing that they were talking about goes live.

I hope we see great things come of this news.

If this sets us up the ability to load up PSX games on the PSP, I will buy one immediately, and not wait for a hardware revision like I had originally planned.

I'd imagine that regardless of what official launchers are present, you will only be able to load sony approved isos without hacking. This would likely mean that you'd have to re-buy those PSX games in their format anyway (PS3 online store comes to mind). If you want to play your existing PSX games (rip them from your own disc to your memory stick, then play them), it's already possible with the right tweaks to your firmware.

yes but it will likely be less buggy than the hacked versions, and whats stopping a hacker from spoofing the header or whatever flags the iso as legit?

Hopefully this is a sign that we'll see that PSP with a sizable amount of onboard flash memory announced at E3. And the Japanese PSN is already starting to show signs of PSP support, so far there's been a Locoroco and Ape Escape demo put up on the Japanese store.

I believe it was already confirmed that Sony was releasing downloadable games on the PSP.
What they really need is a unified store, where you can download content on your PS3 or PC. They publish PS3 content on the PSN store as well as PSP and movie trailers etc, and PSP content as well as movie trailers and music on the PC.
Sony's biggest downfall is their software support. If there was a product for the PC that was free - that was bundled with the PSP - that allowed for easy transfer of music and encoding/transfer of movies, the PSP would be much more appealing to many. Obviously original games need to be included as well, but unfortunately, it's hard to think of new and interesting ideas for a device that doesn't distinguish itself much from its console big brother. The only thing I could think of is more music rhythm type games, although Crush is definitely a move in the right direction.

For serious. You've hit on an area for major improvement. It would cost so little to make a half-friendly piece of transcoding software and package it with every PSP. That little investment would pay off for the PSP big time, as it encourages people to use their systems. People who use them are more likely to carry them, and show people. People who carry their systems are more likely to buy accessories and games.

The only reason I bought a PSP was to play PS1 games on the go, and for that reason alone it was worth the money. The only PSP game I've played is LocoRoco. I really don't have anything to add, I just wanted to mention how much playing Vagrant Story on the PSP rocks :)

You know, as much as I would rag on Sony for copying nintendo again, I would in all reality probably buy a PSP if they sold PS1 games for the handheld on PSN for say 5 bucks or something, as I never had a PS1 and had already missed out on getting a lot of the goodies by the time I got my PS2.

Don't they already do this on the PSN? I believe you have to transfer them from your PS3 to a PSP, but I thought I remember hearing that? I don't own a PS3, so I'm not 100%, but can anyone else say for sure?

Ok, well then go pick one up because they've been doing this for a while now.

Hmm.
My 2c:
Iso's will propably be a special download format, with DRM and stuff, nothing to get excited about. I don't see where this helps homebrew.
So yes, downloadable games (not really news), official sony downloadable games. Meh.

I hope this is true and cracked quickly. I honestly dislike my psp as it is now. I rarely use it, and if it wasn't a gift from my current gf, i'd sell it.

Seriously, if you don't like the system, get rid of the damn thing. If you can't pay attention enough to the games that are coming out for it to know that there's a lot of very good games out for the system now, what the hell is the point of even having it? To justify bitching on a message board because you can say that you own it?

Yeah, and so far they have a whooping library of... 12 games? Taking into consideration most of them are extremely early PSOne games (Jumping Flash, Tekken, Medievil... I mean, most of them don't even support ANALOG CONTROL!), and that, out of those, three were out in december, and nine were added in may... I'd say quantity and constant updates are not exactly high on Sony's priorities.

But I'd say lack of analog control is GOOD for the PSP. ;)

You also need to have a PS3 so you can download it to the PS3 and transfer it to PSP, which sucks because I don't WANT a PS3, especially at the current price. I'd love to play some of those downloadable games on my PSP, but I can't because the PSP can't access the Sony store.

Not directed at you personally, but to those who keep on whining, stop bitching if it matters to you that much and go look up the homebrew scene. That'll let you have a whooping library of every PS1 game, along with the fact that you can change the control scheme like with every emulated PS1 game.
