View Full Version : Lair Gets A Release Date : August 14th, Demo In July

According to FileFront (http://news.filefront.com/lair-release-date-announced-august-14th/), Lair will be hitting the PS3 on August 14th, with a demo coming sometime in July. With 8 new videos (http://news.filefront.com/eight-new-lair-videos-released/) recently released, Sony finally seems to be ramping up the hype machine for this one.
This really can't come quick enough. The PS3 really needs a AAA retail release, and Lair should fit the bill.

I can't wait for this game. It's pretty much one of the main reasons I was early to jump on the PS-triple bandwagon.
Edit: Clarification, Once you add giant fire-breathing dragons to something, I'm pretty much going to rally behind whatever it is. So you're definately not getting an un-biased opinion of the game from me.

Funny thing is, this game sounds as though it should be really fun and cool. Something that id really enjoy but everyting ive seen about it just looks .... kinda average.
Maybe I havent researched it enough?

I agree. It sounds like a good game on paper, but from all the videos I've seen, it looks average at best. I don't care how many dragons/people there are to burn, the gameplay itself looks really boring and simple.
Hopefully I am wrong, but as of right now I couldn't be less excited for this game. I'll definitely give the demo a whirl though. I hope it turns out to be an awesome game, but I honestly don't see it being the AAA title some people are hoping it will be.

but can't you say that about 95% of all FPS....same concept same scheme....majority are just about average.

Dumb down the graphics about 10 years and you have a sweet arse PS1 game in the making. That's how it looks to me. Should be fun though. Panzer Dragoon was awesome.

Funny that you mention Panzer Dragoon, as I think it looks a lot better than Lair. Technically, Lair has a bit more going for it than Panzer Dragoon, but Panzer Dragoon has an excellent sense of art and style that really helps set itself apart.
I hope Lair really is all that and a bag of chips. The demo should be a bit more revealing, but currently I'm not expecting much.

I personally think this game looks cool. The only thing that turns me off it Factor 5's uncanny ability to make a beautiful, fun-playing game that manages to annoy and be no fun.
The gameplay seems cool. Fly around and attack, land and attack, and do rider-on-rider battles mid-air? How does that sound boring?

Blah this is basically another delay in my eyes. I'm gettin sick of this shit. I want some PS3 games to play. I been buying the new PS2 games that come out just to hold me over. It's sort of bad when my next most anticipated PS3 purchases are NCAA 2008 and Madden 2008.

just a comparison, there is not many games out there that lets you ride dragons and do such, I think its a pretty nice concept, not average IMO but every one is entitled to there opinions :D
I think it will disappoint everyone who's been looking forward to it. Just looks way too clunky. I hope I'm wrong, I'd love for the PS3 to have some games worth owning.

Oh, I didn't mean the concept seemed average. For a game it's definitely not overdone (though I can think of a few crappy movies with dragon scenes that remind me a lot of this game. I don't hold that against the game though).
I just mean that the gameplay footage I've seen looks "average" in the sense that it's not "above average", as in it's not going to be a game that will make me spend $60 on it.
I don't think it will be a BAD game, I just don't think it will be great. I think it will be average. Some people are hoping for a AAA game. I just don't see it as being fun enough for that. From what I've seen, you just fly around in a sky full of dragons, and auto aim a bunch of fireballs at them. Occasionally jumping off your dragon for melee kills. It just seems kind of shallow, from what I've seen. I've never even seen a crosshair. It looks like strictly auto aim. That seems... boring to me.
But like I said, I'll wait to play the demo before writing it off. I'm just not getting my hopes up.
Edit: Come to think of it, Lair reminds me of the griffon sequence from God of War 2... only they made an entire game out of it. It was a cool sequence, but would get boring/shallow awful fast if stretched out into an entire game.
This game looks fun for a few levels but then shooting fireballs or shooting fire at little men on the ground will get old.
When is the PS3 coming out with a system seller anyway?

Well, that game will be different for a lot of people. Little Big Planet is that game, for me... but I don't think LBP will have a mass appeal of something like Gears of War or Halo. I'm not sure what that game will be for PS3.
I really can't think of a game like that for PS2 though. I know some will claim God of War or Devil May Cry, but the reason I bought my PS2 was for all the really good games, not a single system selling game. If the PS3 ends up like that as well, I'll be happy.
I actually bought a PS2 last, of all consoles last generation.
It's a good question though; what will the first system seller be? My guess would be something like God of War 3. I'd say Killzone if the first didn't suck so much.

That is a really good question....
My ps2 seller was.....a large number of games (ie. Socom, FFX, and a whole bunch of others) I had to think about it for a sec, there wasn't one game that made me purchase any system I had, there were multiples that I grew fond off in some shape or fashion. I think Killzone or MGS may be that game for PS3 or but its hard to say. Everyone has there preference, most people will say 360=Gears, personally I think gears is over rated, yeah it looks nice but thats another story.

Yeah, the term "system seller" is thrown out there way too much, it's all a matter of personal opinion. Some people want their Halos, some their Final Fantasies, some their Marios. It's all a matter of taste, and with games today, it's rarely something so broad that you could call it a blanket system seller.

Ask Cavia.
Their Drakengard (http://gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/914769.asp?q=Drakengard) basically was the same thing. It was a combination of Destiny Warriors-type mass melee with large bonuses for kill combos, the combination flight/melee gameplay you're talking about, and air combat.
As you can see, the reviews were middling. Common complaint was jack of all trades, master of none. As for myself I liked the game. Lair looks better graphically (it better!) but the gameplay looks less interesting.
Prediction:It'll get good reviews, but crap sales, as this is obviously an ideal rental game.

Indeed. This one keeps dropping lower and lower on my "want to play list"
PS3 is in desperate need of games. There are zero PS3 games on the top 50 selling games for this past week, and the sales bump they had in Japan from NG:S has evaporated. (Although same did the 360 sales bump from Trusty Bell)
I personally think this is a game where the concept will seem more fun than the actual game itself. Gameplay vid's look hohum.

What little interest I had in this game (just personal taste I guess) was stomped to death by the inclusion of timed missions. Once in a while they are Ok, but from a podcast interview I saw they seem to be in the majority with Lair. I'll give it a rental once I grab a PS3, maybe.

If you think this is an AAA title.. I got news.. it ain't. But since PS3'ers don't have much to begin with.. they will over state it and claim it to be. It looks like a A title to me.

I agree. The second half of this video is the only one that has remotely impressed me. Uncharted and Heavenly Sword are waaay higher on my list than this.

I really want to like this game, cause they never made a game based on dragons that wasn't a horrible pile of shit. Which is a shame, cause just everybody can agree that dragons are bad ass and deserve better.
I watched all those videos and I'm wondering if anyone else thought that the camera movement was really weird and unnatural when the dragon does that speed burst target lock thing.
I'll bet that the camera is going to be one of the biggest complaints.
Also, the ground units seem to exhibit zero intelligence. It's like they don't even realize that a giant fire breathing dragon just landed and is burning and eating them alive. They just kinda march along, nothing to see hear.

This is the same game this developer has made any number of times, just this time with dragons.
In short, Rogue Squadron with dragons. If you liked the Rogue Squadron games, and don't don't mind and/or do enjoy dragons, then this might be right up your alley.
Of the big name PS3 titles in the pipeline, this is the one that interests me the least.

Their last released game scored a 77% average on GameRankings and all of their titles have yet to break the 90% factor (beginning of AAA territory). Let's see if they can improve this with new hardware.
