The Playstation Blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/06/28/inside-the-developers-studio-felice-standifer/) has a short Q&A with Felice Standifer, Sr. US Producer for MotorStorm and a member of the Eye of Judgement team.2. Tell us more about your game. What’s the story? What did you do on this game that you couldn’t do on another platform?

First, it uses the next-generation USB camera for PS3, the PlayStation Eye. We’ve combined the camera and real, collectable trading cards, created by Hasbro and its Wizards of the Coast (WotC) subsidiary, to create a completely new concept in trading card games. As you know, Hasbro and WotC are known for the development of Magic: The Gathering, so we’re bringing that heritage to PS3. It is a key component and adds a third dimension to the trading card game genre by materializing animated 3D creatures on screen.

The Eye of Judgment is a tough game to describe, but really a fun game to play, as it is a whole new means of interaction within the trading card genre of games. The cards are embedded with a Cybercode that only PlayStation Eye can read, and once you lay them down on the battle mat the characters come to live and battle in really cool animations on the screen. One major benefit of playing this type of game on PS3 is that you don’t have to count all of the gaming components up when you play your cards; the PS3 does it for you and gives you visual prompts such as when to remove a card or how many cards you should have in your hand.

I can't wait to get my hands on this at E3. This game has been impressive since it was unveiled.

The concept is interesting but it seems like a pain in the ass to set up. To play the game in ideal conditions you'd have to have a table right next to your PS3 so the wired eyetoy can view the "battle mat" and you can see the action on screen.

You'd think that's something they'd consider. I'd think they'd pack in a USB extender along with the stand for the game.

They probably have thought of it but I still don't know too many people with tables in their family room. Then again the audience for this game isn't the mainstream public but relatively "hardcore" fans who are into collectable card games. That audience is probably more than willing to move their kitchen table to get their game on.

Don't most people have a coffee table?

I'm not too interested in this anyway, though, I'm not going to be getting the camera, and I'm not a CCG kinda guy.

Yeah, I don't know if it's the norm, but my family has always had a coffee table in the living room. I just expect that every one does, haha (I'm sure they don't).

I own the original EyeToy and it has a pretty decent length cord. Probably 8 feet or so? A USB extender would be a nice inclusion for this though. Distance isn't a problem for me though, since I have plenty of table/desk space right near my PS3.

The only problems I have with this game are A) I need to know how it will be played and if it will be a FUN card game. I don't just want to collect cards, lay them down and say "I hit you for 4 damage". If it's as simple and boring as that, then all the cool animations in the world won't help.
... and B) I started playing my first TCG about 9 months back, the WoW TCG, and I love it, but it can be a pretty expensive hobby once you add up all the booster packs purchased over that time. I don't know if I want to support two TCG's at once. That's not the games fault. I'll play it if problem A isn't a problem.

All the footage I've seen of this game is very cool from a tech point, but very iffy from a gameplay perspective. I need to see how the actual game is played. If any one has links to the rules or a video of an actual battle going down, post it up!

This game is one of the few that really tempts me to get a PS3...

I don't like how they've changed the game. The early demos you would see a video of your table and cards and the only CG was for drawing the monsters on top of each card. Now everything is CG and I think it's a lot less "neat" looking.

sounds pretty gimmicky to me

THIS is the kind of awesome shit Sony should be focusing on. It's a very cool, original idea, and I'd happily mooch off a friend's PS3 for it (Or buy it, once the price is down low enough).

It sets it apart, as well.

It's actually kind of funny that I'm so excited at the thought of this, when just a moment of thought makes me realize this is the ULTIMATE nickel and dime scheme a game company could come up with, but it's just... So... Technilogi-cool. :(

HONESTLY.

Is this not hte very definition of gimmick? Everyone is talking about how great the game looks and the game has yet to be shown. All we've seen is the itoy gimmick of crap popping out ofyour cards on screen. If the game itself is just Hearts, is it still amazing?

1: A gimmick has never, in all of gaming, been an inherently INSTANTLY bad thing. So many countless features and standards in games started out as mere gimmicks.

2: I don't believe many people have been saying the game LOOKS great, so much as the concept if very cool. And it was shown, back at last E3.

3: Yes. It's cool. Despite the bad rap they get, card battle games, when done right, can be very fun, and utilize a lot of strategy. The thought of turning something real-world physical into something fantasy is a game is cool, especially when this can go on to bigger and better scopes in other games.

And of course, yes, there's a possibility it could turn out to just be like Hearts. In other news, there's a possibility Smash Bros Brawl could turn out to be like Chao Karate. But given that we don't know either way, you really should spend your time on more productive things that fuming with rage about how people are *GASP* interested in a gimmicky idea.

People liking something I don't!? Not on MY watch!

And sweet gods, I'm defending current-day Sony. Again. Curse you, EvAv! CUUUURSE YOOUU!

It looks interesting to me. I'm far more interested in the potential uses of the mic array in the camera(no more headsets, perhaps?) than this particular game, though.
