The US firm Mercury Computer Systems has licensed the Cell microprocessor (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/nid/1011/) "to develop products with dramatically improved performance for graphic-intensive workloads and computationally intensive applications."

I just hope doctors are more tolerable of "Disc Read Error" messages than I am.

Ohhh Mercury has it going on. They make weapons AND medical equipment! They hit you up on both ends.

But, this... may not be a hoax, like the last time.

This was announced last month when IBM said they had a couple outside contracts for Cell already. The only difference is now there is a name to put on the contracts (it was known that there was a contract for medical and military).

For all we know Mercury could just be a sony owned company designed to get hype for the system.

That's exactly what I thought when I read the article. As Click & Clack would say, boooooooogus.

Yes, to simulate pre-rendered environments.

Mercury's been around since 1983. Don't think this is a ruse. Besides, it's always been the plan that the Cell would be everywhere.

The REAL problem comes when the missiles start talking with the PS3s...

A new CPU is being sold by one big company to another to process and calculate things. This is news?

hee hee. I *knew* someone would bring that up. Again. It is officially the next generation's stupidest hype-related comment. May it never die!

They did say that cell CPUS could talk if connected.
This might even let sony come in with a cheeper console and catch up on the xbox comeing out first.

The irony is that the cell chip is probably better suited to applications in these types of fields than it is for actually running games !!!

Anyway, it was always known that the PS3 was only going to be just one user of the cell hardware, and that it would have many applications elsewhere (why else would toshiba and ibm spend so much money). So its hardly the same thing as the hype/propaganda about the ps2 exports being limited to prevent them controlling ballistic missiles and other such rubbish.

Wow. I wonder what Steve Jobs from Apple saw in the Cell processor to make him go with Intel chips? Considering he dislikes MS (I've heard) it would seem that he would run and jump in bed with the Sony, the sworn enemy of Miscrosoft. But whatever...
