The Game Update Notes (http://www.guildwars.com/news/gameupdates.html) on the official Guild Wars website has some information on the new Guild Wars PvP Reward System.

This week we're implementing a new reward system for Player vs. Player (PvP) combat. When playing in cooperative missions and in explorable areas, you will continue to earn normal experience. But when fighting in Arenas, Tournament, and Guild Battles, you will gain faction with Balthazar, the god of war, instead. Faction is shared by all characters on your account and is awarded for kills and for winning battles. Faction can be redeemed to unlock runes, weapon upgrades, and skills, which then become accessible by any new PvP Only Characters for your account.

The rate at which you gain faction will vary depending on your success and the type of PvP. The high-level arenas provide faction faster than the low level arenas. The Tournament provides faction faster than the Arenas. Because Guild Battles require the greatest amount of organization, they provide the greatest rewards. Faction rewards for guild battle victories increase with higher guild rating. Nevertheless, for all types of PvP, even if you are not victorious, you will gain faction for every enemy your team kills. (Please note: To prevent organized faction-farming, only automatic-match, rated guild battles provide faction. Also, characters who have been in a guild for less than two weeks do not gain full faction for a victory.)

This is good news all around as we'll start seeing more and better organized PvP play (as if we haven't already)

Now we just need a bit of variety in the Arenas... Imagine someone who wants to unlock items, skills and runes just by doing PvP... A bit boring isn't it?

Anyway kudos to Arena.net for the wonderful support!

sounds better than the honor system. gaining favor of the god of war versus gaining not-so-honorable HKs?

Still have to cure the "monk-thinks-he's-a-warrior" problem I've been seeing lately. Not A.net's fault, of course. :p

And Arena.net continues to win the award for consistent support and attention to players after release. Good Lord those guys are good.

Sounds exactly the same except for the "God of War" part.

Because it IS the same.

The part I liked best was that the Honor is spread evenly through the team. That means the guys (or girls) who are debuffing, healing, or buffing for the majority of the fight aren't gonna get stiffed because they aren't dealing direct damage.

Which is how it is in WoW. If the team/raid kills the mob, honor is divided evenly. If unteamed players, or multiple teams kill a player the honor is divided by % dmg to all parties which is then evenly shared between members of the party. Now with the change that pvp items only require highest attained rank, we have a very similar system, the only difference, WoW honor is calculated on a bell curve in relation to everyone else, Guild Wars faction seems to work like xp.

I would like to see every Guild Wars or WoW news post stop disolving into quibbling over which is better. I realize I'm one of the most guilty parties, but even I'm sick of it, and I'm sure the Guild Wars people are too. Not to mention, when some WoW info gets posted, like the cool looking new raid zone that's about to go live, I'd like to discuss it here without having to read 30 posts explaining why WoW sucks donkey balls.

2nded as a Guild Wars person. I don't think WoW sucks donkey balls at all, I just happen to not have the extra scratch to pony up every month for a subscription to it, and so I'm thankful to Arena Net for providing a game that takes care of my MMORPG itch (whether you think it is one or not, nitpickers :p ) without a monthly fee.

But as one particularly wise poster mentioned in one of the other thread, we're all very lucky that both exist. Bring on the quality gaming! :D
