Noticed over on the new Next Generation (http://www.next-gen.biz) website that Sony have been doing some book cooking and been fined for their indiscrections. (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=297&Itemid=2)

Japanese financial authorities have fined Sony 4.5 billion yen, as well as back-taxes after the company was found to have been lax in its reporting procedure.
Given that this is related in some part to R&D, will it have any bearing on the PS3?

Since it's about $40 million US, I'm going to have to guess that the PS3 development will hardly be affected.

Being fined for lax procedures is not the same as cooking books.

That just means Sony will have to raise the price of the PS3 to $400+ thus killing any chance they have of market domination. Moms and Dads aren't going to pay that much for a console when two other just as good (if not better) consoles are much cheaper. Nintendo made the mistake of banking on their "name rep" and look what has happened to them. I think Sony is on the verge of that as well.

I agree it's not the same. But the article mentions "been lax" but also said "knowingly". Not paying enough attention and letting something slip by is lax. Deliberatly hiding money IS cooking the books.

If x360 starts doing well in Japan the government get involved and will just give them the money back and more anyways so this doesn't really effect anything at all.

GunnyMo, you really do know how to add one and one to get about 3,000,000 don't you? This fine won't touch Sony, it certainly won't make them commit console seppuku.

Someone from Ohio says I don't know what Sarcasm is?

Reread your rather minimalist post - I notice from your reply that you discovered what emoticons are, finally.

Um 4.5 billion yen is like what... a couple million dollars? Big deal Sony can handle that they dont need to inflate the price of their next console... especially to the point of taking out of competition with Microsoft/Nintendo.

Why can't you simply let this little lover's quarrel die? What started out as a news piece about Sony being fined for tax improprieties has sadly ended up turning into no more than verbal tennis
