Yahoo News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070619/ap_on_hi_te/japan_sony;_ylt=As8hwTvMN_I8BN58JkXIiSgE1vAI) reports that the father of the Playstation has officially retired.

Ken Kutaragi, 56, retired as Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s chairman and group chief executive, the gaming unit said Tuesday. The unit is now headed by Kazuo Hirai, SCE's former president and chief operating officer.Retirement should be a good thing. I hope to do it some day. Ken is doing it today but it's hard to get excited about that.

Kamalot: Thanks to Wayfarer and Deunnero for the same news

Now is this his real retirement or a retirement Sony "persuaded" him to take? If it's the second of the two, I hope Nintendo hires him :D.

Honestly, he did great work in the first two generations, but "I will work more hours to buy one" and "screw Assassin's Creed and DMC4 exclusivity" won't be missed by Sony fans, I'm sure.

Well, Iwata said he would love to work with the man.

Let's see what develops.

Though no longer a board member, Kutaragi will hold an advisory post at the gaming unit, according to SCE official Sayoka Henmi.

Really not his fault if it was Sony execs that forced the Blu-Ray onto the PS3. If it's his fault, then yeah. . . somebody needs to be fired for letting them lose over ten years of dominance in the console market.

Going from overwhelming first place to far distant third place is bad, and because of the extremely high cost of Blu-Ray players, it is going to be difficult for the PS3 to recover at all this generation.

edit : While he had some off the wall comments regarding his child/PS3 Kuturagi did do alot of good for the industry. I wish him well in is future endeavors with Nintendo... I mean where ever he goes...

Lol...I just had a terrible thought. Doctor Setebos or someone needs to photochop a picture of Dr Doom holding up a Nintendo Wii, saying 'It Prints Money!!!' while large monitors say PS3 in the background with stocks falling or some such....

Yeah....I Got nothing. Carry on....no Dragons to see here...

Yes. He retired. To spend his time in the nice place with the padded rooms and the lovely jackets with extra long sleeves, that let you hug yourself aaaallll day.

Seriously, is anyone surprised? The man was freaking *nuts*.

Finally!
A media hyped anouncement from Sony since E3 '05 actually comes true, good for them.
Now get to the games.

What can you say? The man is a master of the hype machine. He even hypes his own retirement by doing it multiple times. ;)

Isn't this the fourth time he's retired this year?Oh, no. This is actually the only time he's retired. Back in April we got a press release from Sony saying Kutaragi was going to retire on June 19th. Now, he's actually retired.

It's a bit confusing, I know. But basically the first time we heard about this, it was just a note from Sony preparing us for the devastating blow yet to come. Now, we've just been blown.

Anyone wishing to give Krazy Ken the proper send off take your index finger put it horizontally against your mouth then move it up and down rapidly against your lips while humming.

Because our middle fingers were getting tired after all those years of holding them up.

Well he may have suffered from terminal foot-in-mouth disease, but he did do some good work when he wasn't speaking publicly.

Me I'm going to go play some Super Metroid and remember the great work Ken did on the spc700 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPC700).
