Ubisoft has announced (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/06/28/news_6128282.html) that Far Cry Instincts will be available exclusively for the Xbox and is scheduled to ship in September. The game was previously announced to be ported to the PS2 as well.
Thanks to Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/) for the tip.
Are there any PS2 owners who are upset by this cancellation?

It appears that is is getting harder and harder for PC companies to "dumb down" video games to the level that is needed to run on the PS2. There were a few other games I heard this happened to due to the PS2's aging technology. But let's face, the PS2 has been the gaming mecha for sometime now. They dominated console gaming even against technologically superior foes...and that includes PCs.

True enough. But just like an old horse, it looks like it's time to put this one down. ;)

Yeah, I think this is Xbox exclusive in the same way Splinter Cell 3 really is, technical limitations.

Or maybe the XBOX has enough of a customer base now that porting is less of an issue?

I'm glad its been canned for the ps2...no way would it be able to handle this beast. Then again, this could further emphasize that FarCry's greatest asset is it's graphics...and gameplay 2nd. PC FarCry was a fantastic game in it's own right; simplistic, but essentially a really fun tech demo. Assume the same for this sequel.

To heck with PS2, I was looking forward to playing this on PC. Every time I try to play a FPS on a console, I just get frustrated because I know I'd enjoy it more with a mouse and a keyboard.

It was never coming out on the PC. Dosen't matter though. I'm sure the original is better.

I don't think any PS2 owner is going to be particularly upset by this. PS2 has been a 2nd class citizen for fps for a while now, with the floppy dual shock sticks not helping any. Also, as someone has already mentioned, a major part of the Farcry experience is the excellent graphics, so without that it hardly seems worthwhile anymore. I was reading an article in Edge and it seems like they'd done a worthy job of recreating the experience on xbox.

I realize its not a direct port (I don't think it is anyway) but as someone else mentioned the greatest asset of Far Cry was its graphics. It certainly didn't draw much attention because of its gameplay. So obviously the graphic quality would have to be decreased for the PS2 leaving... well whatever there was to Far Cry aside from its graphics.

It had some nice AI for the soldiers.

The AI outdoors was pretty decent. Once you went inside though the enemies suddenly became stupid. I don't think they spent much time on close quarters AI as they did wide open spaces as most of the game takes place in.

Why are people insulting the gameplay? It was awesome. Outdoors at least, and before the drag at the end. The AI made the game for me. Playing hide and seek with those bastards in the jungle was tons o' fun. And the radar was also an awesome touch.

I certainly enjoy Far Cry for its gameplay. It has a very different feel from other FPS, mainly AI that would manage to out flank me, the ability to hide in dense thinkets, and zoom in slightly with any weapon to aim better on the fly. I just like how the game mechanics change as you encounter new types of enemies through out the game. I hope the console version retains that feeling.
On the other hand...the pretty graphics sure help.
Oh, and no, I'm not surprised this was canceled for the PS2.
Yeah Im sure those excellent graphics in far cry will look awesome on the xbox's Geforce 3, with 640x480 res.........., Plus any FPS on a console is second class until next gen.
YES ESPECIALLY HALO2, OMG YOU CAN CARRY 2 GUNS, THATS THE BIG NEW THING!. More reptative monsters and pixel shader 1.0 from 2001.

One of the great things about Far Cry that hasn't been mentioned, is the fact that you can only carry 4 weapons adding a touch of realism because you don't have "magic pants" that can carry a rocket launcher and about 10 other weapons.
At least now the autosave checkpoint feature will make sense.

If you want to use mouse and keyboard on xbox, you can. Get a smartjoy frag, or similar device. They work. Only downside so far is that some games have turn speeds hard coded, so you will only be able to turn so quickly, or move the crosshairs so quickly. You will still be more accurate, which is the important thing, imho.

did anyone else think the last portion of far cry was really hard? A great game though.

Wow; my thoughts, out, your words. That's teamwork ;)
If you want to use mouse and keyboard on xbox, you can.
Then you have to get a desk in your living room, set your TV up there, etc. Also, the games are made for controllers, so Keyboard/Mouse combinations are either hard to set up, or make the game far too easy.

it took me quite a few painful/frustrating nights before just running past all the enemies instead of shooting them on that damn last level...IMPOSSIBLE...
