Nintendo Insider (http://nintendoinsider.com/) has interesting and lengthy new hands-on impressions (http://nintendoinsider.com/site/EEEAAuElkyQdFJRROM.php) with the Japanese version of Nintendogs: Dachshund & Friends. A quote from the preview:

My analysis so far? Nintendogs is a very addicting and long game. With over 100 items to collect, different competitions to master and new breeds of dogs and rooms to unlock, Nintendogs will keep you busy for months – even if dozens of hours are spent just petting the dog. But while Nintendogs is a long game, it doesn’t necessarily have a ton of depth. It’s like wine – everything in moderation. You’ll be playing the game for hours on end once you first get it, but you’ll soon find yourself just playing in short bursts to keep the dogs well fed and groomed, and to inch closer and closer to unlocking a new breed of dog. As noted, there are also limits in the game, so even if you wanted to engage in 100 competitions in one day or walk your dog every 10 minutes, you can’t.

Like most virtual pets, the game sounds fun superficially... but once you get down to it, it's too repetitive. The only exception to this I can think of is the Monster Rancher games.

I spent a small eternity piling over all the cd's in my house cataloguing the various monters that come from them.

What are MMOs except more advanced forms of Virtual Pet games?

You've played Nintendogs for an extended amount of time already?

I've had the game since the Japanese launch.
It's true, I've played it less and less since then. Tonnes at first, but I've pretty much totally stopped playing it now (probably more since I've since got other games though, than having the appeal lost on me.)
My girlfriend, however, has played it I think without fail every single day since she received her copy soon after launch. She is obsessed with it. There's plenty more for me to do in it, and I think I'll probably see myself playing it again in these upcoming holidays. It is very well designed, exceedingly cute, but yes, after only a few days you'll find that you turn it on for just 10 minutes at a time, a few times through the day, to feed them, wash them, walk them, whatever.
After a short time it becomes too boring to spend hours on at once, but certainly not boring overall.
