Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/) has posted an interesting article (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=59797) stating that id Software has signed with Pulse Interactive to produce a new version of Quake for next generation cell phones.

Quake Mobile is being developed by Bare Naked Productions for a new generation of handsets which feature dedicated 3D graphics hardware, allowing the phones to display complex 3D environments and objects. The game will be a "faithful conversion" of the PC original, which was first released in 1996.

The first 3D-enabled mobile phones are due to hit the market this summer, and Quake Mobile will be featured as an embedded game on a new handset launching in July.

Hmmm...work is supposed to buy me a new cell phone.

Anyone else think this is kind of a stupid? Playing a game like Quake on such a tiny screen (with a number pad for controls) seems nearly impossible. Then again I've never liked the idea of playing games on my cell phone. I don't need to have access to videogames EVERYWHERE I go. That's just a little obsessive...don't ya think? ;)

Right now I think games on cell phones are one of those meaningless "features" that sales guys like to point out to make the phone seem like something special. I think down the road cell phones might be an acceptable means of playing hand held games but for now I still consider it fluff.

I think you guys are missing the point. This is aimed at the average/casual gamer. Anytime I'm in the metro I always see people either reading a newspaper or playing a game on their cellphones. They could care less about you because they know you have a PC/Console at home.

I am doing a lot of mobile games development now... the market is really huge. That is why a lot of companies are going in. Even the console market is tiny compared to mobiles... every $$$ counts. It is also a market that is much more "dominated" by impulse buying customers.

"Quake for my phone??! Wooowww dude.... "
/clicks to buy

I dont' know about you, but I don't impulse buy phones and their services as much as I might impulse buy a game.

However, I do know of some people that do. I just can't plunk down $400+ for a Razor and and the service upgrade usually required to get it.

Well since I actually used to sell cell phones at radio shack when I say that sales guys use the games as gimmicky features to try to push phones I know that from experience because I was that sales guy. Honestly, I never recall having a customer come in and say, "I want a cell phone that plays games". Ringtones are another story. Most people were much more concerned with which phone was the cheapest or which one had a color display and a few would be looking for PDA type features. I still think that games on cell phones are an afterthought to most consumers, they may play them if they have them but they don't go out of their way to get them. I do think this will change very soon though, with teenagers and folks like us being the primary market at first. Why else do you think they released quake on a cell phone, you think grandma is going to play that?

You actually got a laugh out of me there! Good one. Well, you know what they say about you MD folks right? ;) Yeah I don't either. But I do work less than a mile from the DC/MD border! That should count for something.

Why are almost all the cellphone games action games?

As the button layout makes action games suck. I want a RPG for my cellphone, not a shitty platformer.

More puzzle games too, just please stop with action games.

I also have no clue how quake can be playable without mouselook.

I don't know how long these guys have been working on it: http://www.bobbeetec.com/

I know the ID one is going to be way better, but will we be able to mod it like the original?
