According to this (http://sdtekken.com/2007/06/12/tekken-5-dark-resurrection-online/#more-391) the latest Famitsu says T5 will have ONLINE play.

I'm sure this will be really janky due to lag/latency and missed/dropped frames but hey, it's good for casual games and definitely a step in the right direction for Japanese developers.

What evidence do you have that points that the service will be "I'm sure this will be really janky due to lag/latency and missed/dropped frames ". Any actual evidence of this or are you basing this purely on your fanboy speculation?

I'm happy about this. I payed, what... $15 for it already off the PSN? If I only have to throw in another $5 or $10 to get online play, I'm all for it.

Cool! I hope people get the online play working with all the fighting games. I'd love Soul Calibur IV to include the options. Not so keen on Tekken, but this is good news for anyone who is.

What happened to their principled rejection of online play as potentially ruinous to their finely tuned gameplay?

Bah...they were either making excuses or bullshitting, apparently.

That was Virtua Fighter 5. Much more precise. Nobody cares about precision in Tekken. :p

Or they listened to what fans wanted/changed their minds. However, I' myself would probably go with a negative spin on this, too. The "finely tuned gameplay" excuse always pissed me off; too pretentious.

You know... Tekken sucks.

That is all.

Edit: I haven't played a Tekken since, I think the second. I guess I should give it a try again before saying it sucks. I'm not much of a fighter fan to begin with though. My favorite 3d fighter is a tie between Soul Calibur and VF2.

Gotcha!

My imprecision about their precision was corrected by your precision.

Precisely!

Gorvi's right. You are thinking of Sega saying that Virtua Fighter was too precise to be played online. I don't recall Namco saying that about Tekken.

I hope the netcode is good so they can leverage their experience into putting Soul Calibur IV online.

Just to explain why this sort of thing is really tough to do right in an online fighter, (and even though Tekken is more wide open than VF, it's not THAT much more so.). Tekkn runs at 60FPS. Each frame runs for about 16ms. Generally, after a block, or something like that, the window for countering can get as low as 1-3 frames. Meaning, that to be able to do it, the MOST latency you can have (if you had perfect timing), is about 48ms. Very rarely will you have a connection with that little latency.

It's not so much if it's just two players doing big hitting combos and not really caring, but an on-line fighter and an off-line fighter just isn't the same thing. Any sort of poking game goes right out the window.

This is actually probably a good sign that SC4 will be online. They're getting some experience coding for an online fighter.

I think Karmakin pretty much summed it up pretty nicely. I'd also like to point out I'm fairly certain Namco Bandai (or is it Bandai Namco?) doesn't have a lot of experience with netcode (like a lot of Japanese developers) and that'll come into play as well.

I love Tekken DR, I don't mind one bit @ all paying for the update. Gets troublesome driving through traffic to whoops some ass, now I can sit in the comfort of my own home :D

edit: Plus instead of people bitching how about we wait till it comes out to see if the lag is really that bad.

Has it been your experience that people wait "to see" before bitching about stuff?

The obvious answer is; why wait?!

And even Tekken has just frame moves (moves that must be input within a couple of frames to take effect). It'll be interesting to see if I can pull off Electric Wind Godfists reliably online.

If it works, I certainly hope they roll it over to Soul Calibur 4. I've been looking forward to that game for years, it seems like.

I'm a little concerned that they are charging for the online play component. If the online component was free, there would be more people playing online. If they charge for it, they are dividing their market segment.

While I am not doing to doubt your technical prowess in this area, I am going to list some games that have pulled it off without much of a hitch: DOA2, DOA4, UMK3 (over live), UMK3 Wavenet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_Mortal_Kombat_3#Ultimate_Mortal_Kombat_3_ Wave_Net) (coolest shit ever), Capcom VS SNK 2 (a few hiccups here and there but ultimately well done) and Guilty Gear which played extremely well on Live.

Now can Namco pull it off? I sure hope so. This is the sort of thing that would push me onto a PS3. This was the main reason I refused to buy SC2 for the original Xbox.

Yeah I know I came off pretty pessimistic in my post but that's me.

The online mode can be as good as the XBL SF2 game and I'd still buy it. I want to see more Japanese developers offer this. Am I expecting a perfect play experience? No way. I just want a good/decent one where I can dick around with my friends in San Diego or on the east coast, etc.

I'm actually quite curious to see how Just Frames work in an online environment.

I also love how Namco has milked this one iteration of the franchise. PSP only, then on the PSN and now once again! (At least it's cheaper if you downloaded it already) It's becoming like Guilty Gear XX!

And really, why was the Practice Mode not in the game when it was released on the PSN? O_o

It's an "add-on" for online multiplayer. Meaning, they didn't have it ready for when they released it, so now they want to charge extra after the fact. Namco can keep both the overpriced game and the multiplayer for all I care.

But at the end of the day... they are still charging you to play online. If online multiplayer is free, why is there an extra charge? Seems fishy and a way to sneak in a charge for playing online.

heh, no thanks, I will stick with Soul Calibur. Tekken was a pretty good game when it was first released on the PS1, much better thean Battle Arena Toshinden :D It simply has not aged well, IMO. Then again, I have yet to try Tekken 5, maybe this one is good.

Well, in all fairness, isn't Tekken only $20 on PSN? Assuming they go the expensive route, and charge $10 for online play, that's still only $30 for the whole thing, which, in this generation, is considered budget priced.
I don't see how you can call it overpriced, really. Odds are the online addon will only be 5-8 bucks anyway.

I mean, I'm not going to be buying it, but $25 - $30 for a full game doesn't seem that horrible.

Overpriced game? I don't know how much you expect to pay, but Tekken is priced VERY reasonably.

First off your opinion is wrong, so take it and go home. :D B, never ever diss Toshinden, as it was the best crap fighting game ever made (with Bloody Roar pulling in a close second). Lastly, and about the only thing I am going to say with a straight face, go play Tekken 5. I think they did an amazing job with the series as a whole, and it was the first Tekken since 3 to really feel complete to me. I think 5 was by far the best in the series. If you liked the series when it started out, but wasn't a fan of Tag or 4 then this one is for you. My only gripe being Jin still not having his Tekken 3 moves, but his mom or sister or whatever is a great replacement.

I've always thought the price for Tekken was like $20, which is outstanding to me. Shit I don't think I've ever bought a fighting game that cheap. If it is overpriced because you don't get a box and manual and what not then I would prefer all my games overpriced...as I don't bother with anything but the game. I'm a player first and a collector dead last and a firm believer in function over form.

I am, very much so.

I call it overpriced because of the price it has been released at elsewhere. The game hasn't exceeded the $15 mark in other regions (hell, it was about $12.50 on the European PSN), yet it's $20 here. To me, that's overpricing the game for the US market, and I'm not going to give Namco (and by extension Sony) my money for this.

Adding the online multiplayer at an additional cost is adding insult to injury in my opinion, and I wont' support it.

I guess my opinion on the whole thing has always been that I need to find value in what I am buying. It is a very subjective matter for me, as some things (like say language packs in Worms) hold no value to me, where as this would because it brings a whole new element to the game.

I honestly think $20 for this game in it's entirety is a steal. I would have no problem buying this, and so far it is the only compelling reason for me to buy a PS3. There are no next gen fighters outside DOA4 that are worthwhile on the 360. Right now I am basically stuck with UMK3 and MKA with BC (yay a game i like to play that works!). What can I say, I am a sucker for a good fighter.

What this game boils down to is that Sony says they are not charging for online game play yet they are allowing the games themselves to charge to play online and that's just not right and is almost false advertising.

Tekken without online = $20
Tekken with online play = $30

This is very sneaky and I hope it's the last game to do it... not the first.

It's actually the second, Blast Factor had a multiplayer add-on for $2.95 I believe. I see that as different though, it's more of a completely different mode of play.

But I agree, for the most part, allowing companies to charge for simply adding multiplayer is bullshit and a something that needs to be killed.

And even then I see value in it. I think there are going to be quite a few others that see the same. So the problem you might have is that while you might not agree with it, there could be good sales on it. If there are good sales that is how the pricing is going to play out. Everyone complained that XBL is too spendy but it has sold extremely well, and they seem content with the 800 point sales.

If DOA can get solid online play. Tekken should be able to just as good. I have played full on matches online that where as fast and solid as playing with a friend on controller 2 or even the computer. I think I recalled one bad hiccup. We booted one guy and things when back up in quality. DOA is also much faster than Tekken. DOA4 was retardedly fast. I think Tekken 5 should be able to handle online just fine.

I'm more shocked Namco didn't throw this on 360 though. Not following the trend.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't online multiplayer supposed to be free on PS3??

It has nothing to do with "value". It's a simple fact that there is an extra charge to play online when everyone loves to scream from the rooftops including Sony themselves that online multiplayer is free.

You must pay to play this game online, Sony said online gaming would be free. See the point yet?

No not really as it would be worth it to me. I pay for Live! and never have a problem with it. I can really care less what everyone including Sony is screaming as Namco has priced a product in a range I find acceptable enough to buy. It sucks that Sony's mouth has once again wrote a check their publishers won't cash, but I could care less about agendas or corporate politics. I see a fair price and I will pay it, and I won't lose sleep because Sony made promises they aren't keeping.

BTW I don't even own a PS3, but this is one of the few reasons I am considering it with the other being online MK2.
