View Full Version : Weekend Gamer: What are you playing?

Another weekend! That is always cause for rejoicing. And for my rejoicing I will be playing Command and Conquer 3, Wii Sports and Zelda, and maybe some CoH.
What will you be doing and playing this weekend?

My 360 is broke so I will be playing some Disgaea 2 and NFL Head Coach (yeah, I know, but I picked it up for dirt cheap and it's kind of like a football RPG).

Probably a good deal of Final Fantasy XI. An old friend started up again, so I'll be giving him a hand getting back into things and doing more bst. Hopefully I can hit 53, but that's probably a pipe dream. Other than that, I'm finally really getting into Valkyrie Profile : Lenneth, so definately more of that. And damn, I really need to get back onto the Warhawk beta.

My 360s still alive, but I'm still playing Disgaea 2 this weekend as well. Just picked it up last week and I'm hooked (again).

Probably be playing the Overlord Demo, Shadowrun demo.

Getting kind of frustrated with Oblivion. The combat controls are so wonky that I can't seem to kill any of the quest targets. I've been cleaning up on rats, imps and the occasional wolf; but anything resembling a biped with a weapon is beyond me. Might start a new game with no gameplay mods.

Just might futz around and play at a bunch of my backlog and see if anything grabs me by the collar and say "PLAY ME!"

Twilight Princess
I managed to hit a rare-game-stopping bug that has kept me from playing Twilight Princess for months. Nintendo sent me a bug-free Zelda disc, so I'll be picking it back up.

Pokemon Diamond / Pearl
Yeah, leveling up for another toona-mint. I never win these things, but I like playing.

Prince of Persia: Rival Swords
I really didn't like it at first, but with the re-introduction of Fara, the Prince is starting to have feelings towards her, which compels me to keep playing. I'm now liking it a LOT, but not nearly as much as Sands of Time.

I want to get Forza and Shadowrun, but I've got too many games on my plate already. I'm taking a break this summer to clear some stuff off my plate before Metroid, Mass Effect, Bioshock and others get here to suck the life out of my life.

Prince of Persia: Two Thrones
At least, I THINK that's the name of the Wii version. I really didn't like it at first, but with the re-introduction of Fara, the Prince is starting to have feelings towards her, which compels me to keep playing. I'm now liking it a LOT, but not nearly as much as Sands of Time.

Wii version is called Rival Swords

Some friends and I are having an LAN this weekend so the following games are probably going to be played.

C&C 3
BF2
BF2142
Swat 4
Starcraft
CoH
DoW

Other stuff is also a possibility.

Since I haven't bought any new games recently, I'll be finishing some old ones up.

Directly on my plate is God of War--I got to the last boss last night and stopped, so it should be easy to finish.

I'd like to finish FFX (again, at the last boss), and get further into FFXII.

Mostly PS2 games, actually...I'm too poor to be a current-gen gamer! :D

Thanks. Updated.

The voices in Sands of Time were PERFECT! The voice of the prince and Fara convey real emotion. Whoever did the casting for the inner dark prince in Rival Swords should be dragged out in the street and flailed with controller cords. That voice is awful!

Also the woman who starts blathering every time you want to save has GOT to GO! She is flat and lifeless. I'd rather have no voice than crap like that.

And Odin Sphere will likely be played... and maybe some Titan Quest.

And Ouendan 2... gotta beat Medium difficulty.

And Etrian Odyssey. I have been too busy over the last few days to really play it. Man, I love that game.

I guess I'll look after my kids and keep them entertained at some point over the next two days too. Sigh.

Right now im playing through vietcong, its this mission that has me stuck where i have to cross swampland and eventually hit up a NVA camp were the POW is being held. Im playing it on vietnam dificulty and the saves are very limited in the game.

Here is how it goes out in the game,

ive ran behind this shack facing a river and on the other side a camp fire with 3 NVA talking with them each taking turns to walk around the camp. Then we have three other NVA that patrol the area constantly, armed with AKs and PSHs. So back to where i am with my silenced mk23, i run up behind patrol guy one who is cornering the building that leads to the POW and i pop em in the head twice for a quick kill. I think lean around the building and do the same for the 2nd patrol guard.

I then turn around and go to this hut with a guy sleeping, cap him in the head one and procede back to the cabin located by the water and the fire. I cap the guy in the head who is sleeping there, reload and bolt out the other side of the cabin after a guy leaving the fireside to take a piss. I run up to a tree get into crouching position and lean with my mk23 and pop the guy in the face. I then run back to the house and fire and sit at the door way for the other exit. Then another NVA comes around the side from the fire and takes a stretch, i procede to pop this one in the chest three times. i then swing around and head out the other exit run past the houses where the First NVA was taking a piss and run to the village entrance, only to lay down by some brush waiting for my next prey.

The third guy patroling walks up to the entrance of the village and its fairly hard to define him in the darkness, its just something you need to look for. Being that im in prone i cant fire the gun freehand so i have to iron sight the pistol and swing it up towards the gooks face, hearing the satisfying air sucking sound of the NVA gasping for breath as he bleeds out like a stuck pig. I run back to the house with the fire in the first place, Now a lone NVA sits by the fire, he notices me and tries to shout but i cap him six times, hitting him twice in the left leg, once in the right arm, once in the chest and twice in the skull. Reloading my pistol i chamber the extra round to have an eight stack. Now that i have eliminated the NVA who were awake i return to my Mission of rescueing the POW. I walk back to the hut where i iced the first two nva and signal on my Enginer bronson whose sitting outside the camp ready to lay suppress fire with the rest of my squad.

Bronson hits the flickswitch and the hut we first planted with explosives when we first entered the camp went off, alerting all the remaining VC in the area. They start to pour out of the huts and rush towards the entrance, getting mowed down by my machine gunner hornsters return fire. i run up towards the wooden cage, bust open the door and tell my man to move his ass. We run like fiends, dodging and ducking past the remaining gooks as they try and aim their fire towards us fast enough.

We eventually break past the entrance and get entrenched back into the surrounding woods of the village. I contact HQ updating them of my success of the POW, HQ responds to head towards LZ and evac asap, i rogerwilco hq and pull out my map and compass. I study the map for a mere few seconds, select the appropiate area and have my radio man call in an air strike. 10 seconds later a squadron of planes flys over head dropping numerous bombs over the village lighting everything up in fire.

Now with some basic formating.

I think I once briefly touched a Tenchu game at a friend's house. Other than that I've not played any game in the series before. The demo was rough around the edges, sure. But I don't care, I loved messing about as a ninja. I downloaded the Shadowrun demo, Tenchu demo and Vampire Rain demo from XBL last night. The one I played the longest was Tenchu.

P.S. Vampire Rain sucks ass. The textures are fairly good, the lighting (indoors at least) is terrible and the gameplay is idiotic, especially the controls. He moves like Sam Fisher but rather than emulate Splinter Cell's controls, they decide to go with some bastardized control scheme. Fuck that. (Don't get me started on the enemies either..ugh...)

So easy to bash the game because of Makoto (i.e. transvestite). Granted, its pretty ridiculous, but without giving away too many spoilers, you see him for maybe 1 hour out of the total game. Yeah, its not FF, but its a fairly decent RPG, and quite addictive if you get into it.

Serapth: If Makato (the gay party member) irks you, he's barely in the game... at least, of the 10 hours or so that I've played, he was only in the first hour or hour and a half. If you turn on the Japanese language track (a must) he is actually a pretty cool character and not the mincing pansy that the english voice over makes him out to be.

It's not a perfect JRPG by any stretch but it's definately decent and has some neat plot twists and such. I wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much if I hadn't paid bottom dollar for it. Getting it for $20 makes up for some of the mediocrity and generic stuff and lets the neat and unexpected twists shine all the more :)

Nope, not quite there yet. At least i dont think I am. I just started the Hammerite Clocktower mission and I'm having a blast. In general the game feels like a primative Spliter Cell, but I'm really enjoying my time so far. The levels are interesting, the sound effects are relatively creepy and the graphics even hold up decently. That damn Abysmal Gale mission even freaked me out once or twice. I've already blown hours upon hours into this thing, not a bad pick up for 20 bucks.

And are you playing Xbox or PC version?

Trust me... you'll know when you've done Shalebridge Cradle. If you're creeped out already, Shalebridge will have you cowering under your bed whimpering for your mommy.

I managed to lose my copy of Puzzle Quest, so I guess that's off the menu. It looks like Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow and I might poke around some more in Hotel Dusk, though I'm stuck and frustrated, which always happens when I play adventure games.

Going to try the Overlord and Tenchu demos, play Halo 3 until the last day of the beta, then resume my Rainbow Six Vegas love. Oh, and some FEAR Multiplayer on PC.

I remember playing through Theif 1, but never bothered getting 2. Now I'm thinking of trying both of em again. Loved the first, but basically forgot about it over the last few years. Not feeling like supporting my local Gamestop, I surfed the Steam line up and figured the latest Theif was worth the cash. For 20 bucks, its been more then worth it.

I also just found the map to Shalebridge, you've built up the suspense enough to make me look forward to trying it. With all the graphics on max, the dynamic lighting really makes the game decently exciting. I just wish there was an easier way to deal with the undead. I guess they dont run on the zombie rule system of dying after a shot to the head and damned if holy water aint scarce.

Well, I gotta add Tomb raider: anniversary to my list. Found the PC version today, and after a few hours of headache inducing trial and error, I finally got the damn thing installed!
The game flat out rocks. If ya liked the first game(I loved it) You'll dig this. It blends TR:L with the old school PS1 TR and comes out feeling smooth, nostalgic, and yet has enough new content to merit checking it out. I know what game is gonna keep me up late after the Halo 3 beta is over with... and oddly it's a PC game. Who would have guessed? :D

Of course, this is coming from someone who loves the Thief games so much that he named his firstborn after Garrett the thief.

Have you installed the high-res texture pack (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/thief3/download_6118004.html)? It basically ups the graphical quality of a lot of the characters and environments and gets rid of the shine and glint of the treasure and doors.

(John P's page seems to be down now, but you can get it at Gamespot).

I found that I got stuck in Hotel Dusk a lot near the beginning. Once I started to get further in the story and knew more of the characters and what was going on, the puzzles became less esoteric and made more sense.

And then there was that whole puzzle/sequence near the end where you basically had to stand in one particular spot. If you didn't happen to step in the one spot to trigger the event, nothing would happen. Sigh.

I didn't even know there was a texture pack, thanks a ton man. That stupid shine was gettin on my nerves, especially since I play mainly in 3rd person and Garrett always looks like hes glowing like Jesus. I'll have to install it tonight and see how it looks.

Wouldnt happen to know where I could find a copy of the first two Thief games, would you? I think I'll be catching up on the classics this next week.

Hmm... I know they've put them out in those cheapy packs where you get 2 games for $10...

I've seen them at EB either used or new. It shouldn't be too hard to find them if you look around in the used PC section.

Killer 7
I just picked up a "new" GC copy of Killer7 for $10 at GameStop. It is really one of those love it or hate it experiences, just like I assumed after seeing the fluctuating review scores. You better make sure you can get past the unconventional way that you move on a 2D line through a 3D space and have an appetite for overtly weird/confusing stories. Another design defect is that the puzzles also have the same level of bullshit as a Resident Evil game, and then the multiple personalities further complicate things. If you can deal with some arguably major design defects, I would recommend Killer 7 to you.

I hear that the PS2 port of the game is worse that the GC version.

...In the name of Harman

Planet Puzzle League which leads to Meteos
Not much to say here...because the game is freaking awesome...except that I really want to get on the WFC. I love how PPL made me remember how much Meteos rocked - although you can easily notice the "influence" Panel de Pon / Puzzle League had on Q Entertainment's game. I went back and played some rounds of Meteos just because of PPL. I still yearn for a true sequel to Meteos - and not some Disney-branded crap...

I really need to get the USB Wi-Fi Adapter...

Ah, Eternal Drakness. I loved that game :)

As for Killer7, I never cared that I was stuck on basically a straight-line through the whole game. It just meant that there wasn't any pointless wandering to pad the playtime. In many games, this would be a problem but I think you have to come at Killer7 from a totally different angle in order to appreciate it. Same with the multiple personalities.

Granted, I've since read the 20 page plot FAQ over on Gamefaqs that explains a lot of the japanese symbolism and history that is incorporated into the game, so my appreciation of how dense the plot is.

And you're right. I actually bought that Disney Meteos and played all of an evening-worth of games and then ended up trading it in a few weeks later when I got my 360 :) Not a bad trade.

Yeah, forget about Eternal Darkness, because the Drakness is so much better!

Good point about the decrease in wandering around, Spigot. Although there is some confusion about what path you should take in the game, the limited movement allows you to see what is of importance immediately and interact with it. At first you can't stand the two-dimensional movement, but it really grows on you.

It's only a mask...

Forza 2. Looks like I won't get anything useful done this weekend. Damn game!

Forza 2 can suck you in pretty bad. I found myself hiring an AI player to drive one of my cars in an endurance race last night, before finally going to bed, just so I could advance in the game even while sleeping.

Woke up this morning with a new gold and a new car, hehehe.

I had a horrible dream last night that I'd left my DS outside and it rained and when I tried playing Etrian Odyssey, I couldn't read any of the text.

Thankfully it was only a dream.

I hopped on Shadowrun last night expecting a pile of people to be playing.

But NOOOO... The one evening this week where I really wanted to play Shadowrun and everyone else is playing the Halo 3 Beta or Forza 2. For shame.

I ended up playing the Shadowrun demo last night and enjoyed it very much, a lot more than I thought I would. I'll probably pick it up when it reaches $20, since I can tell I won't really play it hardcore. It was a fun distraction with friends though. We kept taking turns.

For once, I actually played what I intended to this weekend. Played a good deal of FFXI and made it to 53 with Beastmaster (Sea Serpent Grotto actually being good for leveling is so strange). I played some of the Warhawk beta too and actually got used to the Warhawk controls, damn that's fun. I didn't get to VP Lenneth at all, though.
