Word on the street (http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/06/08/demo-overlord.aspx) is the demo for Overlord has hit XBox Live. We picked this game as a possible sleeper hit for 2007, so be sure to check it out and let us know if it's going to live up to our expecations.

It'll cost you 880MB of HD space. In the demo, players don the Overlord’s illustrious armour, assemble a team of fighter minions and head off for a session of serious destruction in the once tranquil area of The Mellow Hills. As you descend upon the unsuspecting populace and wildlife that reside in the hills, use your loyal minions to gather life-force from the somewhat unwilling sheep, grow the size of your minion horde, and let the Halflings-gone-bad know there’s a new boss in town.

Top that off with minion upgrades (where else do pumpkins get used as minion helmets?), throw in some peasant intimidation and a show-down with the Guard Troll at the Slave Camp and you’ll have just as taste of the havoc that a minion horde can wreak.

The demo, whilst being excellent, does not do justice to the full title.
Trust me, this game is many different variations on the theme of excellent.
Never heard of the developmet house, but Codemasters have got themselves another winner.
Good year for them.

Most Live demos aren't good representations of the final game, thats what I've found through playing most of them. ie. Rainbow 6 vegas demo is a level only made for the demo.

Overlord is being developed by a dutch studio...

...Which makes me *sniff* rather proud.

They've been around for over 20 years and were named the #1 independant dev of the year in 2005. They rock. :D

That right there nets them 14 bonus points.

If there's a "Consume" billboard to go with it, they'll get another 14.

I just finished the demo. It's actually a lot of fun (think Pimkin meets Dungeon Keeper). I could see myself picking this up when it comes out later this month.

The scenes in the big open grassy outdoors reminds me of fable a little. Very excited about the possibilites this game will offer.

I'm looking forward to this one and multiplayer against friends ( in the full title ) should be damn fun from what I've read so far. Luckily, I get off from work at 12 today, so I'll give it a try today.

Also just finished the demo.

Welp, That game's going on the "Buy!" list. Its just hilarious, now to decide, PC or 360. Hummm.

This game sounds really sweet, but I am tired of the 360 version of things costing more... EB has the 360 preorder for $60, while the PC preorder is $40. Weak.

Sweet! The means it will be cheap right?

I love how its not racist to make fun of the Dutch. :D

It's sort of like making fun of Superman. You can make fun of him on his underwear outfit and bad haido all you want and at the end of the day he's just not fazed by it.

It's because he knows he's a hundred times better than you are ;).

"Dab some acid in his eyes, that'll clear it up."

Oh, if the writing is as good throughout the game as it is in the demo, its definately worth buying.

In other, unrelated news, Paris Hilton is back in jail. HAHAHA!

Hey now! The Dutch are cool. Their language just sounds like the Swedish cheif from the Muppets show.

Yes, the writing remains good throughout. And your minions remain hilarious too. After you unlock the other three tribes, and begin customizing your tower, smelting weapons and armour, this game just gets better and better.
It can become a little tiresome to keep heading out just to gather more Minion essence, but that is a minor gripe.
Love it.

That demo was alot of fun. Holding the LB button was a bit akward but other than that it was alot of fun. Kinda on the fence if I should buy or just rent.

Care to elaborate on why exactly? I'm on the fence on whether to buy this day one.

The viewing controls are kinda iffy for me, but like noted before is a minor thing. Can't wait for the full release.

I was looking forward to this game since I saw the gameplay clips, but I wasn't sure if it would turn out well. After playing the demo I cant wait to play the full game.

It felt like the love-child of Fable and Pikman. But the love-child likes to light things on fire.

I like it, and it seems like there is quite a bit of upgrading to do.

God, this was awesome. Lighting halflings on fire has never been so fun! I loved rescuing the humans and then setting my goblins on them.
Now I have to wait for it to come out. (Boo!)

I'd swear on a stack of bibles that Pinky's actor is doing the voice of the Jester. First thing I thought of.

But, yeah...if the game can keep up this kind of quality, this is a must purchase.

Uhm, what?

The R6:V SP demo is the Dante's Casino single player mission. The only difference is that the demo's level ends "cliffhanger" style while the final game actually finishes the level.

The R6:V MP demo is the Calypso Casino level, exactly as it is in the final game.

Had this downloaded before this post even went up - I was checking around on Fri night OZ time for the Shadowrun demo, as it was late at night, and I'd just had my basement flooded - complete with my 90-94 complete collection of CVG and Mean Machines, MD hardware, boxes and boxes of carded figures SW and DBZ mostly, a bit of DCDirect. All my schoolbooks and artworks from kindergarten onwards...

Anyway - as someone who massively loved Pikmin - and felt slightly angry and depressed at losing most of a lifetimes memories - I loved this game.

I was pretty much going to buy it anyway (after reading previews) - barrng a review avg below 70% - but this seals it for me.

It's far from perfect. The LT camera is niggly as hell, and as someone who spent hours upon bloody hours refining Pikmin control in 1 & 2 - the RS control isn't terribly accurate. But I guess I was trying to find faults, as I absolutely loved it.

It's out 26th June over here - my preorder's going in this week.

(apologies for slighlty turning this reply into a Newcastle Australia flood report - but I just had to get a little bit off my chest - hopefully - after a day of pumping water out of the basement yesterday - the storerooms dried enough to open the swollen door and assess the damage - the water was 4 foot high though - so I'm not holding out too much hope..)

Darkness looks super average to me. I really don't need another FPS.

Great writing in the demo. Definitely worth a rental at the very least. I'm wondering if it'll get old pretty quick though. I thought the camera control was disastrous and really got in the way of the gameplay.

Squidbot
06-11-2007, 06:23 AM
I just don't get it, people keep talking about the camera problems, I think the camera is usually fine if you let it do its own thing.
If it gets annoying click in the right thumb stick.

I understand the reason they didn't give it the normal analog camera view because you have to "sweep" the minions at some points. But when you have to aim at people to use magic, that's when I find the camera hurts the gameplay. I guess it would be hard to balance controlling the minions and the camera at the same time. Still just a demo though.
