I was watching G4 TV and they did a segment on a game called "Kick Ass Kung Foo." (http://mlab.uiah.fi/animaatiokone/kungfu/en/) This games looks UNREAL, take a look. (http://mlab.uiah.fi/animaatiokone/kungfu/gallery/press/batido.jpg)

Control the game with your own movements - actually, it's your own figure in the play!
The motion capture and collision detection in this game is too precise.

Editor: Props to Finity for the link and this video (http://mlab.uiah.fi/animaatiokone/kungfu/gallery/video/kickass.mpg).

It isn't as difficult as you'd think -- it has more to do with the quality of the camera than anything. An Xbox/PS2/GC could probably do it pretty easily if it had a camera that was high quality.

With that said... The game just looks ridiculous. It reminds me of those old Virtua Fighter things at the arcades where you step inside this booth and flail your limbs like some kind of idiot. Probably fun though...

I hated the Tekken machine at gameworks, as read what you did as standand controller imput, so to do grab someone you have to say kick out your left leg and left arm.

This looks cool, and it does have to do with system power, software to keep track of body parts is very processor consuming.

Expect something like this for Xbox360/PS3.

isn't this what the eyetoy does...

Why does this fail to impress me?
I DO NOT want to dance around in front of my computer screen to play a freaking game. I want to sit back with a beverage of my choice and twiddle my fingers rapidly. That's why stuff like this will never become mainstream.

Now that machine that can emulate smells and waft them across your nose while you're playing... that might be amazing. Although I'm not sure I'd want to smell some of the levels from Farcry, Doom3, Devil May Cry, etc...

Thats gonna be popular with those dating sim games in japan.

Sides... with better software, they could probably have a version of katamari damacy where you do roll a physical ball around, or tracking eye movement.

Yeah, exercise is the worst. Mixing exercise (which should be mandatory) with something fun is retarded. What the hell is wrong with these idiots?

Sigh.

Looks cool, but it's nothing really amazing. The 'Wow!' factor comes from extracting the silhouette of the human figure, and drawing that region of the video over the game background. Which isn't that hard to do, if the background is a blue screen (see: 10 million movies). If they could pull this off in your average living room, then I'd be impressed.

Using the silhouette as a shadow is a really nice effect.

If I want exercise I'll play DDR. Or World Class Track Meet. Or just go outside.

Seriously though, I can't do backflips and half the stuff a game character can do. So unless they expect me to set up a trampoline in my basement there's probably going to be more simplistic movements associated with different actions, and in the end it's just you waving your arms and legs in front of a camera.

Or you could play this game?

Seriously, who actually argues for less options when it comes to gaming...oh yeah, gamers do...figures...

It shows potential, someday hopefully we can have some good movement simulations where you can truly spar with vr opponent or even really simulate a run and gun where speed with turning and darting out of corners on how and where you point a simulated weapon matter rather then just the flip of mouse. I like conventional play, but there is always more room on my plate for new games and ways to play them :). I think this shows a good stepping stone, just like the eye tow demo with the ps3, towards somthing grander.

For gods sake look around some of us could use a bit of exercise in our hobbies to boot.

Exercise sucks, so what if bits of me go numb sometimes.

I saw this thing being played at the Wired Nextfest in Chicago over the weekend.

There was a long line to do it, but you get green screened into the game and swipe at non-existant bad guys with a foam tube, ala "little kids swim with these in the pool and eventually end up hitting each other".

This was just one of stupider things at nextfest, I think I've seen this trick done since the 80's. But check out what was stupider: "cloned" cats. That they had inside of a couple plastic boxes. Freaking hilarious.

Wow, seeing as how I can barely touch my toes (bad back problems), I would really suck at this game. My friend, the Tae-Kwon-Do black belt, however...

Damn right. WCTM and DDR are where it's at. I just dug out my PowerPad a few days ago to play World Class Track Meet. In case you were wondering, it still bites nuts.

DDR, though...that game is the perfect blend of rhythm and masochism. It's gotten to where I'm so obsessed that there are only two songs from any mix that I can't pass (Paranoia Survivor Max 290 and Maxx Unlimited)...so I've just been playing the far superior In The Groove.

But this doesn't seem like a very DDR/ITG friendly board, so I'll shut my mouth. :D

Exercise itself isn't wrong. Mixing exercise with fun isn't wrong (e.g. sports). However mixing exercise with computer games (while it may be fun in some cases) will never go mainstream because people don't want to play computer games and exercise as a general rule.

Although I agree with whoever made that comment about Japanese dating games... lol

Ummm...DDR and PowerPad?

I'm not saying that this game will be a best seller, but I think its a great idea if they can get people off their fat asses for a bit of exercise ;)

That Mindball link was great. Favorite part?

What this game will enable us to do, is to provide you with the ability to concentrate quickly whenever it is required. In crisis situations

Your house is being robbed and you need to calm yourself so that you can more readily deal with the situation. How do you do this? Strap on the Mindball! Freak lightning strike destroyed your car? Strap on the Mindball!

Heh. Crisis situations.

this was also at nextfest. it was very hard, but still needed more giant-headed, virtual bruce lee's and philip k dick's jumping out and swatting at you with cloned cats and hybrid hummers.

it looks pretty easy to do. they have a screen that shows the translated video from the blue-screen and the bounding points. it merely uses the left and rightmost points as contact points for fighting.

They could do something like this with an eyetoy pretty easily.

It seems so obvious that it's probably been done before, but an eyetoy ddr game seems like it'd be cool.
