A while back Capcom announced that they were doing a revamped version of Street Fighter II Turbo. New character models, new animations, new backgrounds - all created by the Udon comic studio - all set to run in 1080p. Well now Capcom has given us a first glimpse (http://www.capcom.com/BBS/showthread.php?t=14467) of the results - our first look at Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

The post linked to says the game is Super Street Fighter II Turbo, so I imagine it'll have plenty of Cammy goodness.

As for the art, lookin' real nice. Here's hoping the animations are smooth.

Almost makes me want to buy a PS3. $600 is a lot less than a stand-up arcade machine, right? Of course then I'd have to buy a 1080p TV. :P

Yes, which she wasn't in, like I said. She was introduced later in the "SF II Turbo - The New Challengers".

Edit: Oh snap, scratch that. Street Fighter II: TWW was just the original 8, SUPER SF II was when Cammy was introduced, so you are correct sir.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo was a later edition with new speed and difficulty, and the introduction of Akuma and Super Combos.

Artwork is looking nice. Are we at the beginning of a 2d renaissance?

The next Hi-Res sprite fighter coming out is KOFXII I think. I wonder if it'll be HD like this re-release of ST.

The low frame count of ST gameplay would make it easier to redraw super hi-res sprites.

Anybody who has ever bought a later permutation of the Street Fighter II franchise (and that one game really is a franchise) better not complain about Nintendo milking its customers.

Isn't this still the two guys on opposite sides of each other fighting until their health bar goes empty? That game? It's 2007. Come on now.

YES! GOD YES! I've been waiting for the return of 2d fighters. Guilty Gear was fun and the half a million So and so VS someone else's have been tiding me over, but they've never really hit the sweet spot. Its always recycled art from old games pasted on fancy new 3d backgrounds which never felt right. Seems someone finally figured out theres dynamite art teams out there that could breathe new life into 2d fighters that they've been sorely lacking as of late.

I like fighting GAMES. I don't particularly care for fighting GAME re-hashed, re-mixed and re-released until the end of time. I like adventure games, too, but I'm not holding my breath for Pitfall Hyper Titanium Alpha Turbo-- Scary Harry Edition.

Got to admit, I am very impressed with the level of detail going into these sprites. Now if they can get it to animate smoothly, it'll definitely look fantastic and I'll be able to enjoy watching myself get murdered by 20 hit combos.

While I would normally agree with this sentiment, and believe that games have evolved beyond what SF II offers, I'm such a fan of 2D fighters that I'm happy to see the ones I enjoyed the most getting some attention again.

Of course games today are more robust, but do they really mean anything in this bloated market? SF II's day has come and gone, definitely, but for those of us looking for a reason to go back to the arcades in 1991 after having spent a lot of our childhoods there, SF II was like the Monolith of 2001, an epochal event that heralded affirmation that, no, your continued loyalty to the coin-op industry has not been in vain. Here is something, at long last, that is actually WORTH your devotion.

I was there for the crowds, the tournaments, the competitions, the quarters slid into the marquee bezel, the arguments, the accusations, the camraderie...all of it. The 90s were a new golden age, spearheaded by the 2D fighters and led by Street Fighter II. For many of us, this new release of SF II washes us back, in a wave of nostalgia, to the days when those feelings were fresh and new and the world was still ahead of us.

Okay, that's a bit overdramatized, but it DOES affect many of us at the cores of our beings because we remember 'the good old days'. Maybe you were there too, but you didn't care (or didn't care as much). Or maybe you cared back then but don't care now. That's all cool. But the excitement about this is coming from those of us that are still affected by our fond memories. It also comes from those of us who had higher hopes for SF II hyper fighting for XBLA but were terribly let down by it and are hoping Capcom redeems itself by paying proper tribute. It seems like when it comes to SF II, they haven't done anything right to commemoriate it since the days of the SF II collections for PSX/PSOne. The Alpha collection was a nice treat (and long overdue), but as any true fan of SF II will tell you, Alpha, while a fun bunch of games in their own right, are NOT the same thing.

Personally, I'd be happy if they just put all the permutations of SF II on a single DVD for the PS2, rather than the abortion that was the Anniversary Collection (although we DID get 3rd Strike with it domestically and that's not a bad thing, although I would also prefer that all three permuations of III were released as their own compilation). But this is a great move for Capcom to make, too. I can't wait to see how the new sprites look in action.

Reliving childhood memories is great. Enjoying a game you used to enjoy is great. Re-hashing essentially the same game over and over (and adding something to the title, as if that makes it a new game) is insulting. I really did like Street Fighter II, but that was a million games ago, or one game ago depending on how you look at it. It's been 16 years. They didn't just re-release it as a nostaligia piece; they kept it going. They make the Madden team look like innovators.

In a way, I'm just kidding. People like what they like, so enjoy. But, like Madden, I shake my head when these things generate interest and wonder if we don't all suffer in some way for it, whether it's lack of innovation, creativity, or resources to something a bit more original.

The reason I asked is because your criticism made it sound as if all games where two characters fought until their health bars were depleted were essentially the same.

Yes, it is just another rehash, but fighting games don't age the same way other games do. The objective is not just to beat the game, but to beat your friends (or strangers). Street Fighter 2 is still a very appealing game to a great many people, and one of the only fighting game I can get my casual gamer friends to play. It's less complex than modern fighters, and the movelists are short enough that they can be easily remembered. In my opinion, the simple gameplay combined with the cool graphics should be enough to get a great many people interested in playing it.

Yes, this will just be a new coat of paint, but it should be enough to get people interested in playing the game again, or, perhaps even try it out for the first time. Fighting games are all about competition, and more competition is always better.

Do you really feel 'insulted' by Capcom for this? I mean, c'mon. 'Let down', 'underwhelmed', even 'unimpressed' would be understandable. But 'insulted'? I mean...that's just being a bit too sensitive. It's not like they said 'This will cost you $600, but if you care about gaming enough you will get a second job to afford it.' Now THAT'S insulting.

I really did like Street Fighter II, but that was a million games ago, or one game ago depending on how you look at it. It's been 16 years. They didn't just re-release it as a nostaligia piece; they kept it going. They make the Madden team look like innovators.

Well, good business and innovation don't always go hand in hand. But I think you already know this.

In a way, I'm just kidding. People like what they like, so enjoy. But, like Madden, I shake my head when these things generate interest and wonder if we don't all suffer in some way for it, whether it's lack of innovation, creativity, or resources to something a bit more original.

We don't all suffer for it because there's lots of new stuff coming out, too. I think to take the view that we're all suffering because Capcom is rehashing SF II AGAIN is a bit of an overestimation of the actual impact of this title on the market. It's not like the entire fan community is jazzed about this. It's probably just a small percentage of the gaming community that fondly remember that golden age, some of which like to chat about it online. This doesn't diminish the releases of newer titles that push the envelope one bit, to be honest. We're fine as a gaming community, 15-20 year old rereleases and all.
