In what appears to be the strangest video game to film adaptation (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117965812.html?categoryid=13&cs=1) so far, Fox is looking to bring The Sims to the big screen.20th Century Fox has acquired feature rights to the life simulation computer game "The SIMS" from Electronic Arts, and has set project up with Fox-based John Davis. The five-year-old franchise is the best selling PC game in history, with worldwide sales topping 85 million, bringing in over $1.6 billion. Pic will be a live-action version.

Steve Asbell is overseeing the project for Fox with SIMS Studio head Rod Humble managing the creative property for Electronic Arts. Brian Lynch will script; story is under wraps with talent yet to be named.

"'The SIMS has done an interactive version of an old story, which is what it's like to have infinite power and how do you deal with it," said Humble. "Given that that's an old story, you can imagine how easily that would translate to traditional story telling."

Davis' most recent projects include "Norbit," "When A Stranger Calls," and "Eragon."

Lynch scripted and helmed upcoming "Big Helium Dog," and penned "Scary Movie 3," and is managed by Benderspink.Source: Variety (http://www.variety.com).

A movie adaptation of a game with no story, created by the people who brought us Norbit and Scary Movie 3? Sign me up... for something else.

So what, is it going to be about some cruel god that puts people in houses with no doors or windows filled with a ton of food but no toilets?

It's going to be a bad bad day for video game movies when this is released.....someone call Agent 47, I've got a job for him.

This is just stupid. Did they actually think this through? Do they realize that The Sims is lacking a plot? They're making a movie about The Sims, which kind of suggests that they'll be following the game's plot, but if there's no plot then that means that they're just...er. Fuck. This really has me confused.

Well technicly Life Stories had a plot.....and they can at least use the default family names that are there when you first start The Sims.

This sounds like an incredibly terrible idea.

They don't care that the game has no plot, they probably don't even know. All they see are the sales figures.

One time I accidently ordered a child instead of a pizza, so I walled him up in the back yard till child services took him away.

What's next? A movie based on Second Life? Dumbest idea ever. Why is it assholes like this are handed tons of money to do this shit, yet the average joe has to jump hoops to get a loan on a car or a house.

bahahahah!

just goes to show the almighty dollar does all the talking in hollywood.

"This game makes a fortune! I know, lets make it a movie to get our cut!"
Even fans of the game won't want to see this (i got nothing against Sims2,
was fun to watch soweone else to play for about half an hour).
Because a game makes money, doesn't mean its going to make money as a movie.

But this truly IS good news! Because now we can all eagerly anticpiate "Madden '07 : The Movie"! (did they even make an '07? Who cares!!
There's a friggin game series that didn't deserve the income.)

Just in case ANYONE thought there might be something good about this...
Are we supposed to be happy that the people involved were responsible for gems like Norbit, Eragon, and Scary Movie 3?

I'll go see it if it has the Wayans brothers trapped in a swimming pool with no ladder.

That kind of seems like the direction in which they're going on this one.

Sounds like the movie's not going to be just, you know, SIMS characters, but that there's going to be the person playing it, or, like, God or something.

I've got it! It's going to be a commentary about organized religion!

Joke. But it does seem really weird.

I'm guessing they mention these things because all three of those movies made buckets of money. Right now, they're trying to get investors excited to bankroll this film, so they talk about how these guys are good investments.

Norbit — $170m
Eragon — $250m
SM 3 — $220m

Note that all three movies made at least $100m more than their production budget, which would make any investor swoon (hell, Scary Movie 3 cost slightly under $50 million, with a total profit of $170,000,000!). When the movie is ready to come out, I imagine they'll downplay any connection.

I actually liked Scary Movie 3. But then again, it had David Zucker (Airplane!) as the director, so that's probably a big reason why.

Im no fan of the Sims but I acutually look forward to see this movie. Will be very intresting to see how they pull this off. However I wonder why they don't make a TV series of this instead? I mean could be kinda like Seinfeld " Its a show about nothing! " with some odd people portraying the sims etc.

I dunno... it might not be as bad as you think; I can think of ways that this movie could be hilariously funny. However, it is likely it will just be hilariously bad.
