To balance out all the recent PSP news, here's some sales figures and un-scientific survey results (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/06/23/news_6128046.html) from Japan that demonstrate how the Nintendo DS is currently enjoying a small increase in popularity over Sony's PSP.When looking at the two handhelds in terms of sales figures, the Nintendo DS has sold approximately 2.2 million units in Japan since its launch on December 2, versus the PSP's 1.39 million units since it went on sale 10 days later. The top-selling games for the two machines in Japan are listed below.

Those numbers are interesting. I had thought the PSP software would have sold a bit better than that. The DS does have a 900.000 lead in sold hardware, which obviously affects the sales charts a bit, but still.

And 2% of DS owners didn't have any games? Erm, that's kinda weird. Yay for Pictochat? :p

Considering the PSP's price compared to the DS, that's rather amazing.

Probably have the Metroid Prime: Hunters demo and are playing GBA games on it until titles they want come out.

Honestly, who need software for the PSP anyway? These guys have had the ability to use homebrew since launch, they don't need to buy games.

They've got the advantage that they've already gotten a bunch of games for which people in the US are still waiting. Heck, if you take a trip on over to The Magic Box (http://www.the-magicbox.com/gaming.htm) you'll find that there are FOUR DS games in last week's Japanese console top 10 and two of them are Nintendogs titles (for those not in the know, there will be different dogs spotlighted in several iterations of the title - a classic Nintendo trick to suck extra money out of a single title, i.e., Pokemon).

The Metroid Prime: Hunters demo was only in the States.

I assume the people without any DS games are using their DS systems for GBA games.

Maybe the people that don't have any games use the multiboot for multiplayer games. For example, a guy and girl each get a DS but only 1 of them gets some games, the other can play multiplayer wirelessly using one cart!

Gamers with friends? Gamers that know girls? I find your theory implausible.

If you notice both the PSP and the DS showed 2% of the people surveyed didn't have games. I'm guessing that in the PSP's case it's because it can play movies and music too and in the DS's case you can still play all your GBA games. I'm sure there are also rental places so you could rent games instead of buy them. The important thing to look at is the number of games that the average DS owner has compared to the PSP, that's where the money is.

I thought the DS was a landslide favorite by what I've been reading on forums. I'm shocked it's not more! That's not that big of a difference considering the price of the PSP, it's games and it's movies. Lots of "what if Sony hads'" come to mind.

I'd love to see a comparison of these numbers to other portable devices. CD players, DVD players, MP3 players, Video Players.

I don't have any games for mine. I *hate* every simple NDS title on the market today.

Seconded. I thought people got over the geek = loser factor a long time ago.
