View Full Version : Sony denies PSP production cuts
[UPDATE] Either way, Sony denies it has reduced its PSP orders in any way. "I'm not sure where the 18 Million claim came from," a Sony Computer Entertainment America rep told GameSpot. "We announced in the Sony Earnings call that the Fiscal Year 2005 PSP shipment targets were 12 million units worldwide. We are still on target and there has been no reduction in forecast."
The Nikkei BP article also talks about the PlayStation 3, forecasting that its mass production could begin as early as the end of 2005. However, the paper says full-scale production is more likely to start in the middle of Q1 2006.

You'd think the media was so hungry for PSP news they're just making it up now.

You're not surprised that EA isn't full of damage control teams?

Reanimated is right, this smells of PR damage control.

Total damage contol. If the 18 million was untrue, why did they wait months, then after 12 million was annouced, then after people pointed this out to bother to refute it. If it was untrue in the first place, they'd have made the correction,, not waited until now.

Yeah, you'd think they might correct it in some kind of high profile manner, like, say, giving the correct forecast in a high-profile, high-stakes quarterly earnings announcement. If they lie or don't do due diligence in those, they can get slammed with shareholder lawsuits, so if they'd only put the statement in there, EVERYONE would have noticed.
Additionally, a statement like that would be easy to dig up, so only the most slipshod, lazy reporter could miss it later on when someone tried to contradict it. There's pretty much NO WAY a story saying 18 million units were forecast could make it into a publication worth, well, anything. If someone were so slipshod as to report 18 million units after such an earnings statement, you'd probably never want to read that source again, them having completely destroyed their credibility.
Man, if only Sony had released a forecast in an earnings statement, that would have been the perfect way to prevent all of this from happening!

Eatme, perhaps you were too busy being sarcastic to note the details. The contraversy here is that parts manufacturers are being cited as being told 18 million BEFORE that April quarterly earnings report. That April report is the very reduction they are talking about, not previous proof of Sony's numbers.

It took that information a month to come out?
Hmm, maybe I'll believe it when I see a single attribution. "Suppliers were told". Excellent. Got those meeting minutes? A corroborating source? Anything?

Yeah, that large delay in reporting the possible discrepancy threw me too. I too would like something a bit more specific than an ambigious, some suppliers somewhere were told something about 18 million.
