The 100 Best Products of 2007
Our editors rank the best PCs, HDTVs, components, sites, and services. Plus: the products we're looking forward to next year, and which technologies are rising and falling.
I highly value PC World's articles and opinions so kudos to you Nintendo. Too bad the Cell processor or Sony's PS3 didn't make the list. With Blu-Ray tech I'm honestly suprised.

The Xbox 360 Elite also came in at number 18

What are the criteria for the list? As I see 2006 and 2007 products on it, and Gmail is on it? Isn't that from '04 or '05?

Yeah, the definition of 2007 is really loose.
People should really take these lists with a grain of salt, John C. Dvorak has said numerous times these lists are usually mucked up by whoever is lying around in the office at the time with spare time on their hands. Very little fore thought or research usually goes into these lists.

Besides...lists are kind of dumb. Wanna know my top 100 cereals? Come on, its just as arbitrary and stupid as this.

That’s less of a list and more of a potential mental issue….

For some reason the above conversation got me thinking of The Count counting clones of Count Chocula.

Cereal still doesnt explain how or why the cell processor or blu-ray didn't make it into the top 100, but if the subject MUST be hijacked by cereal then I'll say that Ken Kutagari is Cuckoo for CoCa Puffs.

Yeah, the list seems pretty random... And despite the fact that I hate it when people say it: But why is this news? Somebody whips out a list of 100 things they like, without really stating any form of criteria for putting things on the list and we somehow care? I'm not criticizing EvAv, cause it shows up on other sites, but this isn't valid. At all. In any way. So why is it being posted? I mean the iPod and Apple TV are on it, but no iPhone? The 360 Elite... Really? Would we post a list of the prettiest girls I know? The top ten things my boogers taste like? Ridiculous.

I think you're thinking of "The Count" from Sesame Street perhaps?
The Count counting... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xunXQPEcoHM)
PS3 didn't even make the list...that's a shame...
(Insert belly-laugh here):) :)
So it's just random picks from whoever is in the office at the time, and still nobody picked the PS3? Ouch.

It's easier for me to say which cereals I don't like. But at the top IS Count Chocula.
Soooo anyway the PS3 sucks, I hear.

Yes, it must.
No going back to the old topic. Keep your eyes on the prize.

That's a pretty crappy list. Did they just pull stuff out of a hat or something?

With all the bad press Sony's gotten lately I wonder if that had anything to do with the omission.
Edit: The cell processor isn't really that big a deal, and Blue-ray hasn't won the format war, nor has it really won the mainstream consumer over either, so I'm not surprised they didn't make the list. Also, the PS3 has been pretty 'meh' so far. Sorry Playstation fans, just being honest.

Why the hell would Cell or Blu-ray make the list? Especially Blu-ray? This is the top 100 products of '07. That ultimately means it's tied to sales as well as the phenomena it generates and promise it has shown. That's why Nintendo made 3rd place, the thing is incredible. And, more importantly, from a retail product angle it's doing what retailers dream about, flying off the shelves faster than they can stock it. Guaranteed instant cash.
The Cell processor is an overrated, overreaching technology that has done caparatively little except come 'this close' to bankrupting Sony. It's Kutaragi's hubris expressed in silicon. It may, in a few years, be known as the project that did bankrupt Sony, we will see. It has not performed any computing miracles, it forms the heart of no personal computers, and adoption outside the games industry in fleeting. Performance-wise, it makes gross tradeoffs that allow incredible performance in a very limited set of problems, aka Folding at home. From a programmers point of view, are the tradeoffs worth it? They can take it or leave it. And again, it ain't selling well. If PS3 were selling like hotcakes, you can bet it would be on this list. But the cell itself should never make the list. Can you believe Kutaragi initially wanted to forego a graphics chip in the PS3, believing that Cell could take care of all the graphics tasks!?!?! He really is insane!
And Bluray? You've got to be kidding me. How is it even a new technology? It's merely an improvement of existing technology, not fundamentally new in any way. What's more, it's up against a competing technology and the two are neck&neck. Without a clear winner neither are a consumer success, and won't be on this list.
So why is Xbox360 on the list? In aggregate, it's a great kit, and more importantly, it's selling well. And the results it produces graphically are fantastic.
One last thing about the Wii controller: it's a great first step. Think of it as the NES controller, an essentially gen-1 rethinking of the man-machine interface. That's huge! Gen-2 may incorporate spatial-positional sensors, and the result will be true motion translation into the machine instead of mere angular-translation. When that is accomplished, the last major barrier to VR interaction will be taken care of, and genuine applications can begin to be truly useful, such as remote-robotic surgery, DNA and chemical simulation & manipulation, etc. Wii has opened the door to this and much more. As far as games go, I am so glad they are rereleasing Resident Evil 4 for Wii! I nearly picked up the GC version the other day, and now seeing vids of the Wii version, it's like it was made for it!

It seems to be 'best products people are actually using in 2007', regardless of release date.

Ugh, when will all the undeserved hype for this machine end. The games blow.
