In this latest Ubisoft Q&A, Patrick Redding, Scriptwriter and Game Designer for Camera and Scripted Events, takes us further into the world of Jack Carver's feral instincts. This new aspect of the game offers some very different gameplay to the one we experience in PC Far Cry and should make for some interesting gameplay elements.

Jack’s evolution is at the heart of the Far Cry Instincts experience. Our theme is “Adapt or Die,” and in the story this is linked to the research of the main antagonist, Dr. Krieger. Krieger believes that modern humans have become too disconnected with the natural world. He develops a serum that allows humans to tap into their dormant animal abilities.

After Carver receives this serum (involuntarily), he begins to manifest improved strength, speed, stamina and senses. But he also finds it easier to fall back on raw aggressiveness to deal with his enemies, and this pushes him steadily towards savagery and inhumanity. Carver starts out at a disadvantage, but over time becomes uniquely suited to the tropical wilderness. He becomes the perfect predator.

Hrm, sounds like it could be good so long as the consequences of these abilties play into the story. Not just giving you extra abilities for the sake of it.

Sounds good, assuming they dont muck up the gameplay with these "abilities".

I see dual assault rifles on the screenshots. I guess CryTek decided to abandon the realism for a more Goldeneye approach.

I'm pretty sure that CryTek is not too involved in this game since they announced their partnership with EA a while back. I think this is coming from an internal Ubi studio.

Oh, right. I forgot about that partnership.

Just checked and according to GameSpot,
The EA-Crytek deal will have no effect on the console editions of Far Cry and Far Cry Instincts, which is being developed by the Splinter Cell makers at Ubisoft Montreal. Originally slated for a holiday 2004 release, Instincts was recently delayed until 2005.
Funny: I live about 20 mins from Ubi Montreal but never even seen the studio.

FarCry had the most generic videogame storylines ever.

Oh? I loved the FarCry storyline. It was supposed to be more funny and more cheesy but I guess the company decided against doing it to the end. According to CryTek, the game's just a generic old movie (Island of Lost Souls, anyone?) set in a modern atmosphere. Sure it offers no surprises but at least it's not about hellspawn breaks through in something, somewhere.

Far Cry always seemed like Jurassic Park to me, what with the mountainous tropical islands and genetic engineering getting out of hand. I liked the game, even though it was deficient in many ways (voice acting, plot, monster design).
