...to the surprise of absolutely no one. What may be a bit surprising is the $90 price tag, however it does come with some pretty cool stuff.
From Team Xbox (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/13548/Grand-Theft-Auto-IV-Special-Edition-Announced/):
The Grand Theft Auto IV Special Edition will be presented in a customized Grand Theft Auto metal safety deposit box. The box will contain:
-Grand Theft Auto IV on the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system or the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, both with special packaging
-The Grand Theft Auto IV Art Book, featuring never-before-seen production artwork from Grand Theft Auto IV
-Selected soundtrack CD from Grand Theft Auto IV, featuring new material from top artists, only available on this release
-An exclusive Rockstar keychain for the safety deposit box keys
-Completing the collection is a limited edition Rockstar duffel bag
Yeah, but does it come with a helmet?

Remember the good ole days when nickel and diming meant that you were only charged nickels and dimes...?

I remember when this used to be called "Retail Box" and we paid a normal price for it.
Thank god the savings from eliminating jewel cases, toys, large boxes and so on got passed along to us.
*eyes roll right out of the top of my fucking head*

A fucking duffel bag?
I'll be buying this probably regardless, but - a fucking duffel bag, a keyring, book and a CD - for $30 US!
Anyway - as someone who's bought both the Audio CD boxsets (GTAVC & GTA SA) so far, and have no reason not to buy the GTAIV box - unless they double up tracks on the CD with the game. Which I'm sure they wouldn't do...
EDIT - OK, a safety deposit box sounds kinda cool - but I'm thinking more GOW tin size than real safety deposit box.. anyway - maybe it'll fit all my other GTA games in there too..

I find myself more and more excited for GTA IV.
But this post has shit to do with that. $30 dollars for a bunch of useless ...STUFF? I'm so glad I don't buy into this crap.
Also, I harbor a little hate for all of you that do. Because you're willing to pay more, they're willing to give me less.

You can still choose to buy the standard game, correct?

The safety deposit box sounds cool. I like the idea. But $90? And less than a month after we are paying $120 for Halo 3 Legendary? And for some reason I can't help but think of this movie when they mentioned the duffle bag.

Yes, which makes me wonder: why all the complaining? You don't have to buy all the extra crap, and I don't plan to.
Of course, thats because I'll be a little broke after buying my Spartan helmet. Halo 3 is the only game I ever plan on buying an uber special edition for, and I figure I'll go all the way.

Yes, but does it come with a cloth map?
No joke — that would sell me right away.

As an adamant denouncer of all things collector's edition, I will be buying this if only to throw my support behind video games being packaged in duffel bags.

No GTA branded bat? I'll pass.
Dammit, I might get it if I have some money lying around. Guess I need a bat to get some money.

Um, less what? I expect that the normal version will include the disc, a case, a booklet and maybe a map. What else were you expecting, and how do the people spending $30 more take it away from you?
I've been gaming since the late 70s and extra junk rarely came with a game. There were indeed some [computer] games that came with awesome manuals, but that was a function of the fact that a) we didn't have the Interwebs to get information and b) I played a lot of simulation games and the manuals would go into great detail about the physics and history behind the simulation. The cloth map is the only other occasional bonus I miss, and even that was a relatively rare extra.
Besides, games today cost less than they did 20 years ago. Adjusted for inflation, you'd be paying $70-80 a pop for games that I bought for $35-40 in the 80s (should I need to mention the $60 and $70 games that were released for the SNES in the 90s?), and development costs in those days could be the salaries of 1-4 people for a couple months (and often even less than that). Even accounting for the reduced manufacturing price, developing and distributing games costs a ton more now than it did way back when.
Short version: Complaining about "collector editions" is silly and complaining about videogame prices in general is even sillier (unless the game just plain sucks).

Not sure whether this has been mentioned already, but surely putting the safe deposit key inside the locked safe deposit box is dumber than rocks.

That's their way of keeping the game out of the hands of children.

Hrm, seriously, if they through in just a printed, folded map of the game world I'd buy it in a heartbeat (that said, I'll still probably buy it). Playing previous games, I hated having to run to a computer to check something.
Ideally they'll have a GPS in game like TDU - I wish my GPS had a sexy voice like that one...

Yep :)
Except GTA1, but I don't remember a map. The copy of LCS I got had one, too. I just didn't see anything in the list and would think they'd advertise it.

a safety deposit box, easy to store your cash. a duffel bag, great way to transport "goods." and people are complaining that it doesn't come with a helmet?!?! the halo 3 helmet is for decoration, you can actually use this stuff in real life!
but, as i've already stated in the Assassin's Creed thread, i'm pretty much a whore for any limited editions (Prey, C+C3, Spiderman 3, Mortal Kombat, TES4:Oblivion, AoE 3 had damn nice set with a full size art book and the full soundtrack, Civ4, and these are the ones i can think of off the top of my head). the soundtracks have always been great with licensed tracks, even if i didn't like most of San Andreas. but yeah, all this is missing is a mini (or full size) baseball bat.

Note the Angry Face ... means I mean business! Disagree with this comment, and you run the risk of having TWO angry faces directed at you. That's right ... tread with caution

What the hell is a 'selected soundtrack'?
You telling me $90 doesn't buy the complete soundtrack?
Anyone who says complaining is silly, is him or herself sillier than a futhamucka.

What the hell is a 'selected soundtrack'?
It's hopefully a soundtrack with selections that they're not including in the upcoming CD soundtrack box set.
As I stated before - I've bought the (7 and 8 discs respectively) VC and SA Cd boxsets - but even they don't contain ALL the songs from the radio stations in the games - and they're fairly long (although there are some notable "bigger licence" omissions).
If the soundtrack is half as decent as the previous 2 games - I'll be buying another GTA CD boxset - and the chance of getting a more "complete" version of the soundtrack is appealing to me.
Though a buck says they'll just include songs from the to be released CD boxset - and use the CD as essentially a promo for said boxset.
Now that would really suck.
Still Rockstar - surprise me.
90$ US I wonder how that will translate to Europe? We usually have to pay higher prices and stuff we already have an established price of games for like 80$ here in Sweden lol. I can only assume that with tax and other stuff this 90$ pricetag will skyrocket to way above 100$ lol. Man maybe I should just ditch Europe completly and move "over there" :)

Heh, like Zacharai said if it came with a quality map I might throw down, since GTAs are such huge freaking worlds. But... a duffel bag? Y'know I'll think I'll pass on that. Oh I'll throw down for GTA, but the collector's edition just seems... pointless.
I pre-ordered the Assassian's Creed CE because it comes with a goddamn figurine, a huge one too. That I can appreciate.

Yeah...like I said...30 dollars for useless stuff. I just don't get it. And yeah, I think that they may offer a little more in the retail packaging if everyone wasn't so willing to pay for "collectors" editions.
Eh, whatever. A fool and his money, right?

So what's the soundtrack 'theme' this go-round anyway?
They gonna load this thing up with a pile of euro-thrash, death metal and token yank-pap like limp bizkit and korn?

I hope they go like they did in Gta3 and lower and just used indie artists. It would allow them to cram alot more music into the game.

I'm hoping for custom soundtracks myself. With the present day setting, I have these horrible visions of shitty emo-rock and even shittier hip hop.
