View Full Version : And you thought the Foreman was Big!

Just when you thought the PS3 couldn't get any bigger.....the development kit (http://www.ps2nfo.com/modules.php?name=News&file=showarticle&threadid=2575) comes along.
I have my doubts this is the real deal...the pic is too small to make out any details. Funny none the less that it's on a PS2 fansite.
Update: Borys kindly supplied this link (http://img11.echo.cx/my.php?image=devkit6vs.jpg) to a much better picture.

For a moment (while the image was loading) I thought the dev-kit was these 2 small devices on that table.
Hey wait that's not a table, that's the dev-kit!

The device on the top-left, the one that looks like an ice-cream sandwich, has a power plug. While not scientific, you can imagine holding it to plug it in. From that, you get a sense for how big the rest of the setup is.
That's a BIG ice-cream sandwich!

Anyone notice where the article says the dev kit includes a 2.4 ghz processor. What does that mean? That's certainly not the Cell. Will the first generation of PS3 games even be able to use the spes?

Yeah, I don't believe this is a dev kit at all. There's simply nothing in the photo to even indicate it is, nor would I think Sony could have settled on their exact measurements for the PS3 yet if the dev kits were so obscenely large. It's a total hoax. (This from someone who is most definitely not a Sony fan.)

The black screws at each corner, unless they are extra-big-super-sized-Sony screws, suggest a box not much bigger than a desktop PC case.

Has a 2.4GHz Cell and an unreleased GPU with a slightly slower clock speed than RSX (overclocked G70?), connected via PCI-E (4-lane, only for test purposes).
The realtime E3 demos were running on this kit.
The software environment currently does not automatically split jobs up into threads (i wouldn't really expect that though, tbh?), but you can create your own threads, and choose from 3 different scheduling algorithms which the system will use to assign them to the SPEs automatically.

The Japanese page with all the writing I couldn't read sold it to me. That MUST be the real thing!

Sony should just sell that in Japan. That's like a two-family home there. Right? That's why people cannot buy XBoxes, right?

Development kits are always larger than the final hardware. For example, check out the size of a PSP dev kit. It's almost a full tower

I wonder if Reanimated thinks the final Xbox 360 is going to be the size of a Apple G5, despite all evidence to the contrary. Somehow I doubt it. They've already revealed the form factor of the PS3 & Xbox 360 and the PS3 is smaller.
In some people's worlds, if the PS3 is too big, it's less efficient than the Xbox 360. If the PS3 is too small, it's less powerful than the Xbox 360

No way that's a full tower. Slimline desktop on it's end, maybe. Look at the CD drive for comparison.
Anyway, my experiences with devkits is that devkits are invariably far bigger than the final hardware, and a _lot_ slower.
Dreamcast - two boxes about the size of midi case PCs. One was a PC running NT4 and the other contained the early hardware with some funky connectors between them, IIRC.
XBOX - Midi tower PC (quite a nice case, all brushed aluminium), then a taller version of the final box.
PS2 - About the size of a table top dishwasher!! Hideously coloured, too.

Well, judging by what has been said here, I'm going to believe it is the size of an average computer tower, as opposed to some of the other suggestions, such as a chair. If it is the size of a tower, that would mean its about average size for a dev kit, and as such, no big deal. I call pointless on this entire thread, despite the fact that the fanboys are sure to show up in record numbers to this kind of thing. Why so much flamebait, I must continue to ask myself, as I am SURE this is going to degrade into another imature conversation over who's 'box' is beter.

The items on top of that giant box appear to be a network switch, a removable harddrive (the icecream sandwich) and a KVM switch. I'm really not sure WHY that stuff is in the pic unless there are 2 independent computers inside that box or something.

I must have stepped throught the wardrobe into Narnia, because I really can't recall saying anything about the final size of the PS3.

Ah yes, I see, just more Sony fucktards doing their usual wordsmithing and shoving of words into other people's mouths.
Down the street; not across it, if you please.

That box can endure massive amount of beating as it has been held together with Scotch tape.

I was implying more about the general suprise about the size of the dev kit.
But way to get super-defensive towards some comments in a thread on the internet ;)

So what if its the size of a small bus? It's not like there is final silicon in there anyhow. Its not like this thing is even going to resemble the final hardware very much internally let alone externally. Its way, way to early for that. This has only slightly more to do with the final size and specs of the real PS2 than the price of Brandy in Chile. So relax.

Super computer nothing...that's the M5 baby! It can run the Enterprise!
Ergo, Kutaragi is Sony's answer to Richard Daystrom...hmmm, actually the parallels are there...okay enough geekery.

The older Ps2 dev boxes were about the size of a PC but were skinned to look like a giant ps2. *shrug*

One has to remeber that the dev get to look at all the nitty gritty stuff in games. they have to know how much ram is being use n such. this make the dev kits bigger cuz you have to put in a way to mesure it.
Just for kicks i'd like one of the ps2 or even ps 1 ones to fool around with.

I like these much better than the PS2 Dev kits though. They are much lighter, and have less razor sharp edges.

Kinda like the way Sony 'fans' were the ones who've been saying "hardware performance doesn't matter" for the last 3 years are suddenly deciding that the possibility of the PS3 being faster than the XBOX360 makes it better.

Likewise, you could just as easily say that xbox 'fans' seem to have switched stance now that there is a possibility that PS3 is more powerful -- whats the point?
And...
This has to be the most retarded story/thread -- putting any sort of importance on the size of the dev kit is grasping at straws.
