Apparently Sony is getting pretty aggressive in Europe about the "illegal" imports of PSPs. If you bought one, Sony could knock at your door and confiscate it. The Guardian has the story (http://www.guardian.co.uk/online/story/0,3605,1512591,00.html).
Should the legal action prove successful, those who have paid around £200 each to buy imported PSPs could find themselves empty-handed. A copy of the writ, seen by the Guardian, demands that details of the British purchasers are handed over by the importing companies.
Maybe actually releasing the PSP in Europe would help?

Man, I wonder what grounds they can make that assertion on. I've never heard of laws against importing consumer hardware or software unless it had to do with encryption technology.

How dare you even think like that.

This has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever read about. Seems like Sony's living up to the big syndicate mentality.

Way to go Sony, way to alienate people who really want to buy your device (legally, not steal it!) and they simply can't because your European policy is even worse than Nintendo's.

Way to fucking go.

Yet another company gets dellusions of granduer. Maybe they should stop trying to control the market and try promoting/improving the actual PSP and then they wouldn't have to cut their shipments.

They're releasing the PSP over here? .. oh... who knew?

If you've bought an evil imported sony PSP, how are they going to find you? You can't get a warranty surely...

*slaps the data protection act in their face*

I was about to make a post that said just this, but you saved me a lot of time. How many of the people they confiscate machines from will actually re-buy them when they're officially released? None.

It just makes no sense what-so-ever.

The corporation will go to the high court on Monday in the hope of securing an injunction against firms who are importing the consoles from Japan.

Phew! Glad I imported from China then....*runs*

This action against importers is profoundly silly. In somewhat better news it seems SCEE is saying it's not targeting the consumers (and I'm not sure they'd ever be able to pull that off anyway) in this GamesIndustry (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=9706) article.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz this morning, SCEE head of corporate communications Nick Sharples said that "we're absolutely not going after consumers - that's not our objective at all."

There I was, about to fly off the handle and cite this as final proof that Sony is utterly toxic and should be unanimously condemed by the entire industry as fuckwits.

Then I saw the story is from the Guardian, it might as well be Spong.

Sony going after the import businesses and shutting them down is nothing new, they've been doing it since the dawn of time, another reason I hate them.

Under what authority does Sony have the right to confiscate materials you legally bought? Any impropriety would be on the part of the seller, and the buyer should have no liability to the company.

That being said, I would love for a representative of Sony or any other game company to knock on my door... looking for a fight.

Funny as hell!
I can't fathom why they'd bother doing something as stupid as that...oh well, I'm sure Kutaragi-San has his reasons.

I hope you all realize this is 100% fake. In other, related news: the word "gullible" is not found in the dictionary.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Did you look at the link to the story? I've never heard of the paper The Guardian, but that would be a lot of work to go through just to make-up a story.

There was another thread that was posted an hour after this one that debunked this silly story.

And yet, even after the thread you lined to was posted, people were still agreeing with the misinformation in this thread.
