In a move that truly qualifies as f'n brilliant Midway will be releasing a Playstation 3 collector's edition of the upcoming John Woo's Stranglehold that includes a Blu-Ray version of Woo's classic Hard Boiled.

The details from 1UP. (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3159596)
Midway announced that the film will appear in HD for the first time as a PS3 collector's edition bonus, and that the whole package will retail for $69.95, $10 more than the standard version.

Notably, the game and movie will appear on a single Blu-ray disc, opening up questions about why the movie isn't simply included with every copy of the game (we're guessing it has to do with licensing fees). It should be interesting to see if the disc will work on non-PS3 Blu-ray players given the single-disc format, but there's no word from Midway yet on that front A 360 CE was also confirmed, but no details were given for it.

If you've never seen Hard Boiled, go out and rent it today. It's a true classic

That's definately a nice touch, seeing as how the game is a sequel to the movie.

That's fucking sweet. A collector's edition that I actually want to buy. I love hard-boiled. Best gunfight in a movie ever and Samuel L. Jackson's favorite movie ever according to his Maxim interview. Quality.

Well I guess you gotta justify those BD-ROMs eh.

That is brilliant. Hard Boiled is one of my favorite action movies. Back when the game was announced I thought it would have been a great idea if they bundled it along with a copy of Hard boiled since it is quite rare to find on DVD. A nice bit of fan service and a great selling point for the game to boot.

I guess the 360 version will just be getting the movie on standard DVD then? I can't see them opting for HD DVD since most of the people buying the game wont be able to watch it. I love this movie and even though I have it on DVD this would help sway me towards a PS3 to have it in hi def.

Best use of Blu-ray yet. If anyone hasn't seen this movie, it's unbelievable. His last good movie even though I semi enjoyed Face Off.

I very much doubt this is a proper HD transfer.

Hoping it's better than my letterboxed Criterion, a proper anamorphic widescreen version would be sweet (as long as the image quality isn't too bad)

And you're basing this assumption on what now?

I will buy the 360 version just for Hardboiled. (Should they choose to bundle a DVD with the 360 version, which I hope they do)

(ok I'll play Stranglehold too ;) )

Would you make the effort when your product is being given away free, to a fraction of the people who actually buy Stranglehold?

There are people who haven't seen Hard Boiled?!

Great transfer or not, this is still a pretty nice bonus. It certainly beats a figurine or metal tin that you typically get get with collector's edition games. This is something you can actually use/watch.

This is a definite for me. Now one more reason towards the soon to be PS3 purchase. Now i have go home and watch "A better tomorrow" 1 to 3, The killer and Hard boiled.

On HATE!

Seriously, this is a nice incentive to buy the CE. Well played!

Note wanting to Hate and all but doesn't this just enforce that the only reason to have a PS3 is to watch Blu-ray? I mean thats the only reason I have one at the moment. And to be honest I would suspect that if they did a true HD transfer of Hard Boiled it will come out on a stand alone Blu-ray disc as well.

This is just me, as ps3-"meh"-boy (as opposed to fanboy or hater) dropping in to say: that's one cool bonus to add to a CE, as well a good use of the extra BR storage.

Just to derail (and I ask this in all honesty)...is there a way for Sony to somehow speed up BR drives in the installed base? Thing is, BR's extra storage (or HDDVD's) is going to be neccesary in future games (who else wants to avoid 4 dvd games, like the old 6 cd games?). But BR as I understand it (although I have never looked at it indepth) is too slow to use as a storage medium to stream textures from (meaning you'd have to cache them on the HD for later use, either as a direct install or an install-during-play). And whilst Sony et al can create faster BRdrives, that's not a solution for the ps3, as the standard hardware for that platform is set in stone for gamedevs.
So is there a way for sony to get some extra speed out of ps3 BR drives without overheating the electromagnetic drives spinning the BR disks? Any ideas appart from ps3.1?

One of the greatest action films ever, and my personal favorite John Woo film. The Killer comes close, but Hard Boiled is so good it makes me cry. This makes me want a playstation 3 even more, I hope they do something cool for the 360.

Don't feel too bad, truth is most people haven't. I had to order my copies of Hard Boiled, The Killer, and the first 2 A Better Tomorrow movies from Hong Kong. Make sure you get subtitled versions, absolutely no dubbing, but that should go without saying. Lets be clear here though, The Killer and Hard Boiled are two of the absolute best actions movies ever made. A Better Tomorrow and the sequel are extremely good too, but much more melodramatic.

When it comes to Tequila from Hard Boiled or Jeff from The Killer, only nukes are capable of killing more people in a single scene.

Also, apparently in Hong Kong, guns don't need to be reloaded.

There's a Hard Boiled DVD re-release coming in July, so there may be a Blu-Ray release coming along as well.

Great addition for only 10 bucks. The 360 won't be getting this version because it doesn't have the disc space for the movie, unless they add an extra dvd.

That's an awesome deal, probably one of the best bonuses to come with a CE ever. Also, someone tell the rights holder to Hard Boiled to FRICKING RELEASE A PROPER VERSION IN AUSTRALIA ALREADY. It annoys me that the only versions I can get here are dodgy asian versions / bootlegs.

A stroke...of marketing genius.

Great idea. Beats the HELL out of a lousy little cat helmet any day.
