1Up has a fairly amusing article about the history of drugs in videogames. (http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3141581)

Who wants to take bets on how high David Smith was when he wrote this?

Do we have a scale to measure his highness? Because I'm betting it was way up there.

Hey man thats my favorite past time getting high and playing games, but some games i dont enjoy because i need to think clearly or i will get my ass whooped. Also i cannot belive he didnt mention fallout series, drug use is a big gameplay aspect in the game to make your guy better in ways....

Something a little more worthwhile on the same subject (http://www.gamedev.net/reference/design/features/genreaddict/). ;)

Another game he forgot was Postal, in number two he could smoke crack that gave him health and also made him alot more resistant to bullets and damage but if you didnt keep on smoking crack you would get real hurt from it after it wore off. You could also eat this catnip which i think they were joking and calling it a peyote or magic mushrooms or something and you have a very trippy trip from the game effect quite fun.

How could he forget Fallout? I remember getting my character hooked on Mentats. Then there was Jet. Once you go Jet you never go back.

What about that guy in Morrowind that had a beer bottle and pipe under his bed? Anyone remember that?

i one time went into the drug town and i swear to go at first the two kids by the mummy show started bugging me and following me where ever i went so i punched one to go away and they started hucking rocks at me so i took my 12 gauge and i blew each of their faces off then the entire town started attacking me but good thing i cleaned out that raiders house earlier or i would have been so fucked over with that many guns at once and all these coked up druggies who punch for 40 damage them bastages.

Edit:
In morrowind i remeber reading how the dark elves get addicted to moonsugar so i just assumed it was crack rock, and yeah you can drink and smoke things ;) which most likely give you diffrent abilities.

This is the sort of article that more than anything else reminds me why I never watch Tech TV anymore.

haHA!... I still do. :\

Actually on Attack of the Show last night they had the story about the re-released MMORPG that I posted yesterday. I like pretending they probably got it from me (even though it was slash-dotted and all).

Very interesting essay. If the guy had used some real sources and statistics it would have been a GREAT essay.

Dirty Harry, have you heard of the period or the comma? Do these mystical punctuation marks exist in your homeland?

Most of it is general observations we could all make ourselves.

The complete absence of Mizuguchi games implies poor research.

Very true. Fallout should have been at the top of the list. Though admittedly the premise for the article is a little weak. I'd say general drug use with gaming isn't significantly higher than with any other pastime. I'd say less so, since you're actually needing to often think clearly to succeed in gaming (unless you're playing Rez).

I don't really see a difference in my gaming skills when I am enhancing. I do see a big change in how much I eat though :D
