Missed this one (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3141614) yesterday:
Microchip designer Jack Kilby died yesterday of cancer, reports the Associated Press. Most people wouldn't know it, but it's thanks to Kilby video games are a part of everyday life. Kilby invented the integrated circuit that now powers most modern electronic devices, video games included.
A solemn salute and moment of silence for this great man.

He is to be respected.
However, I bet it was the chips that killed him. The same with video games (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2976).

We'd have no Information Age without the integrated circuit.

But I still think it was something in the chips that killed him.

Sad that most people will go on with their lives and not be aware of how this man changed the face of human history.
I agree with the others here, chips & hardware bits are toxic, probably did him in...

I found an excellent article (http://www.ti.com/corp/docs/kilbyctr/jackbuilt.shtml) detailing the history of the invention of the integrated circuit, and why it's so important. It's written all in layman's terms, so I thought it'd be a good addition.

To cure cancer all you have to do is jump off the Goldengate Bridge. Cancer is no longer a problem.

We've all got cancer inside just WAITING to come out. Heck, mine's already reared its ugly head :-/
The good news is, his invention has gone a long way to making it easier to find fixes for various cancers. Without Integrated Circuits and the follow on technology, you'd have no computers. Computers which are so helpful for biomedical research now adays.
