Wow, who saw this coming. By the time you read this, the cards should already be in stores. Ign (http://www.ign.com) has the scoop (http://gear.ign.com/articles/628/628012p1.html) on this one with seven pages of impressions and comparisons.

So there you have it, the GeForce 7800 GTX. Quite an impressive card, indeed.

Now, those folks hoping to go from 240 to 395fps in Quake 3 at 640x480 won't find that here. This is a card made to run smoothly under intensive situations and it does that well. It scales better than the GeForce 6-series of cards so it seems like NVIDIA has indeed done its homework and not only beefed up the cards innards but tweaked, prodded and poked until it worked cleaner and better as well

Update:New Forceware drivers available here (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp). Some cool things like dual core support. New 64-bit drivers as well.

The NDA must have expired, pretty much every hardware website has reviews of this card today.

Woo! Time to go and get myself a 6800 GT!

So how does this compare to the PS3 chip?

Edit: Other than Doom, the benchmarks are very interesting. There's only a 23 frame difference between no and full AA/AF in SCCT, the x850 does just as well as the 7800 in HL2 and for and Far Cry (a WIMTBP game) ATI actually does far better!

Yeesh, with a $700 pricetag, it'll probably be two years at least before I even consider this card. Its not like I'm rich or something. Hell, for 700 I could buy something like 25 or 30 console games. I sorta think that the 30 games would be a better deal then the video card.

Kinda makes you wonder why consoles are 200-300, and the GPU's running them cost twice as much by themselves...

Too expensive :/

Great card but there's no real reason to pick it over say a 6800.

And personally I hate how each PC video card topic must be derailed to some console GPU's comparison.

Keep this shit (RSX) out of the GeForce 7800 GTX thread.
This news is for people who may or may not upgrade their PC.

Because consoles themselves lose money. It's the games and services where it is won back.

AFAIK, the console versions of the cards aren't the same, they are "stripped" in a sense.

Also, it helps when someone orders 10 million of something as opposed to 1 ;)

It's because there are still ultra-nerds out there who buy this stuff for the hell of it.

There are plenty of people who buy it for performance reasons as well. Anyone who has played the BF2 demo knows why someone might want a 780GTX.

Golly for 600 I could build a new PC with a midrange graphics card and it would play all the same games at pretty decent frame rate.

Yeah, you tell'em Plac1d!

Like the people who buy ultra-expensive and exclusive speakers, TVs, cars or even fridges.

Damn ultra-nerds!
They can afford living in luxury so I'll hate'em for that!

Seriously, I think the 6600GT is a very good buy.... very decent performance and a great price in the 160-175 price range.

Nice.I love to hear news of a new card coming out. It means the current cards prices eventually fall :p

This is a gaming site, meaning all games...console and PC. Thus:

The RSX was supposed to be finalized at the end of the sunmer and at the same time the G70 comes out? I would bet these are very similar chips.

This is a super high end only card so that counts me out. I buy my graphics cards in the $200 price range.

Because consoles themselves lose money. It's the games and services where it is won back.
Also, consoles only have to be able to support a few custom resolutoins, those of a TV and an HDTV. In fact, the normal resolution that a GPU will be pulling in a console is 720x480 interlaced.

Computer graphics cards have to deal with working with the OS, all other hardware in your box (which can pretty much be anything) and handle every single resolution from 480x320 all the way too 2500x2000 if necessary. Not to mention dealing with refresh rates (which TV's are stuck at 60) OpenGl or DirectX and a bunch of other stuff.

Also, higher end ones have 256-512 megs of GDDR3 memory, that stuff is far from cheap.

Then, on top of all that - theres probably at least a 50-100% profit =p.
(I can't say much, My graphics card cost $440 when I bought it)

Whoa, 2 DVIs and S-video, too bad its PCI-Express. I heard they've already hit the ceiling on express's technology, but not on AGP.

I still find my ATI 9700pro kicks ass at everything I throw at it graphically.

Its all the physics and animations and sound and AI that drops my petty 1.6ghz to its knees.

Actually the slot the card plugs into is not the limiting factor. PCI-E has the ability to transfer larger amounts of data than AGP but even the AGP bus had enough bandwidth, hence the reason why AGP4x vs AGP8x is really no performance benefit.

Don't forget the controllers and the "remote controll with DVD activator" stuff! Oh and all the cables! Oh and don't forget that they make bukus of money on in-game advertisements now!

Being able to guarantee 10+ million sales a year tends to drive manufacturing costs down quite a bit, as opposed to making just enough to satisfy that small number of people willing to spend $600 on a video card.
