According to the Norwegian newspaper VG (http://www.vg.no) Funcoms new game, The Secret World, will be a MMO taking place in present time and the three major cities will be London, Shanghai and New York.

- It is one of the first games in the genre that takes place in real life and in present time. Because of that it's a new and exciting twist for online roleplaying that up till now has been dominated by scifi and fantasy, says Erling Ellingsen.

The game is being developed for PC and XBOX 360. No release dates yet.

I'm not sure if this is old news but it's new to me.

I'm surprised that Funcom is developing two MMO's. Both this and Age of Conan sounds interesting so in worst case they'll only steal customers form themselves.

It's an interesting basic idea, but until they announce what the heck we'll be doing in said game I really can't find a reason to be all too excited yet. Besides, Age of Conan is far closer to realization and that still looks damn interesting.

They probably should not have announced this so early.

I like the idea of having an MMO set in modern times. WE will have to wait and see on the implementaion.

Considering a good chunk fo conan is single player, and the majorty of mmorpgs builds over time with expansions I bet they are using the same engine for conan which makes it easy to develop 2 mmos at once.

So this is the game all the commotion was about with the poem. They gave up to early in revealing this. They could have kept that charade going for longer. Granted, that might have swayed people into thinking the game will not be as fun as the lead up to the announcement. They should have milked their marketing idea more, imo.

I don't understand what they mean by a modern MMO vs the normal sci-fi/fantasy approach. I look at the concept art and think "wow this is sci-fi."

As a long time lover (and hater) of AO (Anarchy Online), I can honestly say i'm intrigued by the game. I gave up AO about three years ago and have yet to find a game that had the awe-inspiring localities that AO seemed to have. Not to mention the music for AO was very emmersive.

This is the game from the above website...
If you look through the concept art on this site (http://www1.vg.no/bildespesial/show/spesial.php?id=5346&o=0&katId=41), you'll see that the image of the city is the same one you get on the above site if you click on the "O" and attempt to unlock the puzzle.

The scenery looks nice, as well as the monster designs, but those character concepts look TERRIBLE. Bland, unoriginal and uninteresting. If they're going to be drawing on the wealth of mytheos that surround underground cults and cabals, they're gonna need to do a better job than some guy in a rain coat and a trendy japanese kid with swords.

I hope it's not all completely city based. Matrix got old after a while with the same generic buildings everywhere...Definately need better outdoor greenery enviroments.

I think they are making the characters look normal so you feel like your in a modern day setting. I'm thinking it is going to be Home with combat and apparently mutants.

funcom has said the single player portion will be between 5 and 10 hours of game play ..during the single player portion you'll have the option of joining up with other players

I wouldnt be surprised if the World comes out in 2009 at the earliest
