A 12-year-old schoolboy from Russia’s Urals city of Yekaterinburg has died of playing computer games. After spending 12 hours at a local computer club, the boy fainted and was taken to hospital, where he died of stroke eight days later, the Novye Izvestia daily reported on Tuesday.

I highly doubt that it was the games that killed him. Probably some underlying medical conditions at work here.

Man dies after 20 years of eating bacon.
Woman dies after 10 years of smoking.
Man dies after 45 years of living a smoke free life.
Man lives to almost be 100 smoking three cigars a day.
People die.
Video games is the number one cause of death for anyone according to major media.

....I'd be dead 1000x over....Oh wait...I eat, sleep, and workout and do not do drugs, drink heavily, or engage in real life risky behaviour.

Hmmm...would this make the second time someone has died while playing a video game? The first was, if I remember correctly, a kid who had a heart attack while playing Berserk (with a score of 66,666 no less). Don't quote me on that...I just vaguely remember it from an old Next Gen sidebar.

That was the most poorly written news article I've ever seen. Clearly, English is not their first language.

So where were his parents? I mean come on.. 12 hours? Don't you think someone should have asked where the hell he was? Or maybe they didn't care. Wait a minute! That would make it his guardian's fault... not the computer game's fault! Oh no! Responsibility! Revert to blaming computer games!
Ok... but seriously... The kid obviously was a moron. He should have showed some restraint.
Though... I used to play Descent 2 for anywhere from 6 to 12 hours at a time..... ;)

Yeah, and meanwhile a 11 year old boy goes for 4 days without food or water in the wilderness (http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/06/21/missing.scout/index.html) and is just fine. I think that the rationale that the video games caused the kid's death is somewhat irrational.
And this just with the Battlefield 2 demo. Imagine what the death toll will be with the retail version.

It's not just for Koreans anymore!
I've done way longer than 12 hours straight before, and on more than a few occasions... never even felt bad, despite the mad amounts of sugar and caffiene that I generally intake at LANs.
The kid mustn't have been a healthy mofo.

Killed by only 12 hours of gaming? What a wuss! I've got nearly 24 straight when City of Heroes was still new...and I survived!

a few times i have pulled the covetted 20 hour iron man award and lemme tell you ive done it more than a few times and back in the day when i was in school i did this, got home at 2:45 and stop gaming at 4 am and wake up at 7 am and i did this for what seemed like 3 months because i just got rtcw and had joined a clan and their practices and matches were so late at night.

So how is it a games fault that the kid died of a stroke? He obviously had some problems when he spends 10-12 hours a day, every day in the computer club, but even so, that would hardly be the cause of a stroke.

Only 12 hours?
On rare occaisions I have studied for more than 16 hours continuously ("hehe, only stupid people study during the semester... hmmm 4 hours to the exam DAMN"), and that surely must have been more stressful than 12 hours of gaming.

more people need to die while gaming... so that we may laugh at them.
On a less serious note.. the russian mob probably killed the 12 year old for being a smacktard.

One summer day when I was playing UO, I discovered the Abyss shard. The first instance of capture the flag in an MMO. Played for about two days straight, and finally passed out while getting breakfest. Literally passed out, as in sprawled out on the floor with my breakfest thrown everywhere.
Guess that was a real brush with death!

Yekaterinbugrg, Urals region is one of the most horrible places to live in Mother Russia. Millworks, mining industry, heavy machinery factories, nuclear powerplants etc. The environment is raped like Bush wouldn't see it in his wildest wet dream. Playing 12 hours straight can indeed be too much for a poor frail kid over there.

Damn these bastard capitalist western influences...

Doubtless this must somehow be Bush's fault.

I've heard of guys in Singapore keeling over after 36+ hours, but I highly doubt it was the games that killed the kid after only 12 hours.
Saying that gaming killed him is like saying that your bed killed you if you have a heart attack while sleeping.
12 hours? thats possible? .... well i cant play more than 3 hours :P

Fantastic Deadend. People are now asking why i'm laughing at work :D
This thread is sick but very funny. I have to admit I must be a bit of a poof when it comes to PC gaming. After about 4 or 5 hours i need a rest cos i end up feeling really ill.
Ok with console gaming though.

Come to think about it, this is apparently the same Yekaterinburg where the last Tsar of Russia was executed by the Bolsheviks.
Think about it.

Or any kind of "real life" at all, is my guess. Sorry, it just jumped out at me.
